Why Does Your Cat Shake

If you've been noticing your cat shake, periodically or steadily, one of several underlying conditions might be to blame. Generally, a cat will shake or vibrate as his muscles react to a good stretch. This is normal behavior, especially after a healthy nap. If your cat shakes while awake, as if cold, there are other symptoms and signs to look for when determining a possible problem.

Generalized Cat Tremors Tremors are an involuntary and rhythmic shaking of the limbs, head or body. The location of the tremors, if localized, would be the first step in indicating a potential cause. Generalized tremors where the entire body is shaking could indicate a few things, the most common of which would be poisoning. Whether your cat goes outside or stays indoors, check to see if there are any toxic substances that may have been accessible. Anti-freeze, chemicals of any sort, and some plants may be particularly harmful to your cat. If you have recently made a change to your cat's diet, administered medication, or applied any type of flea and tick product, this may be causing your cat to shake. Some cats have been reported to be violently allergic to certain types of flea and tick medication.

Toxic food substances or medication may be causing a reaction as well. If generalized tremors are accompanied by problems using the litter box, an intestinal blockage due to disease or ingestion of a foreign substance may be to blame. Other causes of full-body shaking may include neurological disorders or hypomyelination, a condition that generally affects kittens and most often resolves itself without treatment.

Localized Cat Tremors - The Head Region Shaking of the head can indicate many things, some serious and some easily treatable. If your cat is shaking its head back and forth, possibly accompanied by scratching at the head or ears, the first thing would be to check for ear mites, or a flea infestation. Deeper trembling of the head area would indicate a more serious problem. If it's possible that your cat may have been hit by a car, engaged in a fight with another cat, or fallen from a high location, head trauma may be responsible for the tremors. Ongoing head tremors may indicate a genetic disease, however shaking that has begun suddenly and is not associated with trauma may point to encephalitis, brain abnormalities, epileptic seizures or vestibular disorders, which affect a cat's balance.

Localized Cat Tremors - The Pelvic Region Often, trembling or shaking of a particular limb can indicate severe pain or weakness of that area. Check for localized trauma to the limb, or bunches or lumps that may be signs of a tumor. Shaking of the entire hind end may point to metabolic diseases like kidney failure or low blood sugar. Neuromuscular diseases and tumors or other conditions affecting the spine area and vertebra may also lead to shaking. Spinal pressure or muscular conditions may cause problems with walking or movement as well.

Norwegian Forest Cat - the Facts Every Owner of This Cat Breed Should Know
Norwegian Forest Cats lived in a harsh and cold climate for most of the year, so their coats are adapted to this environment. It is long and thick to protect them from the hash winters and virtually waterproof. They get a summer coat in spring, resulting in shedding that needs to be attended to. Some say that grooming so not necessary, regular grooming of a Norwegian Forest Cat is a useful tool in combating shedding, though they shed far less than other longhairs. They require regular brushing to help deal with tangles and matting and may require a bath at times if they get too oily (the oil is what makes the coat water resistant). The coats themselves appear in many colors and patterns.

Cats are intrigued by water

Cats: everybody knows how much they dislike getting their fur wet. Yet, many people that own a cat can claim that they have often found their kitty with its paws inside their water bowl or playing with the water dripping from a faucet. As odd as it is, many cats love water, they are attracted to it and many spend hours just playing with it.

Things appear to change though when the cat's fur gets wet. For some reason, cats seem to hate getting their fur wet. Yes, they seem to do very well with licking their fur but water being poured on their precious fur? No way! Just a few drops on their fur will make their skin spasm and they will readily lick it off with their tongues.

Why is that? Why do cats dislike so much getting their fur wet? An explanation may be the fact that cats originated from desert regions where of course, water was a rare event.

There are however, variables between cats and water. Among the feline family, tigers appear to enjoy spending time in the water to cool off whereas panthers and lions try to avoid water as much as possible, unless getting a dip will take them on the other side where there is prey.

Your Cat: An Owner's Manual

Your cat is a unique and complex animal. She has a variety of physical needs. She also has a psychological and emotional life that bears consideration throughout the life span. Every cat is different but here are some basic guidelines for a healthy and happy feline life.

Basic Physical Needs
Cats need good food, clean water, and a clean litter box. It sounds simple but when you consider complex health needs and the preferences of each cat, it's good to consider the following.

Healthcare
Cats need regular veterinary visits to keep up with their vaccination schedule and to monitor their overall health. Most vaccinations are on a yearly schedule and are crucial for helping to prevent serious diseases. A monthly flea and tick treatment is very important for skin health and allergy prevention even if your house is impeccably clean. Enrolling your cat in a healthcare plan will help lower these costs as well as costs during illness or an emergency.

The Best Cat Diet
A diet that best meets your cat's nutritional needs will help prevent illness and disease and behavioral problems. Cats ingest water best through the intestine so moist food is much better for them than kibble. Even if fresh water is always available as it should be, your cat can develop urinary tract problems and bladder obstruction on a purely kibble diet. Your cat's teeth and gums aren't helped by kibble, either. Regular brushing and a healthy diet are best for the teeth and gums.

The best diet for cats is a raw formula specifically formulated for cats. Cats in the wild hunt animals and their diet is made up primarily of whole animal protein including all the fluids therein. The raw meat is perfectly safe for the cat's digestive system but does require proper handling and room in the freezer at home.

How to Diagnose & Treat Abscesses on Your Cat

Your Guide to Home Remedies For Cat Urinary Tract Infections

Home remedies for cat urinary tract infections are very effective at treating and preventing this common medical problem. In this article, you'll learn more about home remedies, the best ingredients and why they are much more effective than drugs.

First, let's talk about antibiotics. It's unfortunate, but most of us have been sold a bill of goods by the drug companies. Look at all the advertising they do. No wonder they've managed to program us. There are three things you need to know about the use of antibiotics in treating cat urinary tract infections:
Antibiotics suppress symptoms, but do not heal the conditions that caused them. Antibiotics have side effects which can make your cat's condition worse. Plus, we all know how sensitive cats are.

Since antibiotics do not heal cat urinary tract infections, this can lead to recurring problems.

Natural Treatment for Cat Urinary Tract Infections
Contrast the points above with the points below (note: we are talking about using a homeopathic remedy that is specifically formulated to treat cat urinary problems):

Treating Hyperthyroid Cats With Just One Shot

Although injecting a cat with radioactive material might sound like it would do more harm than good, it's the best treatment option for cats with an overactive thyroid gland. The disease, which is common in middle-aged cats, causes several symptoms such as: weight loss, hyperactivity, anxiety, vomiting, increased thirst and urination, along with an increased appetite. Once diagnosed, there are three treatment options: radioiodine therapy, surgery, and lifelong oral medication.

"Radioiodine therapy is arguably the safest and most effective treatment," explains Dr. Thomas Graves, a veterinary internal medicine specialist and endocrinology expert at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana. Surgical removal of the thyroid glands can cause laryngeal paralysis, as well as other complications, such as hypocalcemia (low calcium levels). Lifelong oral administration of methimazole, an anti-thyroid drug, also carries risks and can be expensive long-term.

Although the thought of injecting your cat with radioactive material may cause concern, it does not seem to bother cats or cause any discomfort. In fact, the procedure is incredibly simple. The cat arrives at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and a catheter is placed. One injection of radioactive material is given, and then the patient relaxes in a special room until being released from the clinic.

Some owners grow concerned that leaving their beloved cats in the hospital for five days is too traumatic. However, Dr. Graves mentions that, "Over the years I don't know how many hundred cats I've treated with radioiodine therapy. I've never had a patient that did not easily acclimate to hospital life." In short, cats residing in the hospital after treatment have a good quality of life.

Yellow Kitten Vomit

Although it's not unusual for most cats to vomit at certain times throughout their lives, any time you notice a kitten vomit it's important to be aware of the fact that there may be a problem with your cat. Because of the fact that kittens are generally much more fragile than adult cats in terms of their overall health and ability to deal with outside issues and concerns, even diseases and conditions that might be minor in other cats will prompt kittens to suffer from major episodes. Read on for a brief guide to the potential causes and treatments when you notice your kitten vomiting up a yellow substance.

Feline Distemper In many cases, when a kitten vomits up a yellowish substance it is a sign of a very serious and often fatal condition called feline distemper. Known officially as feline panleukopenia, this disease is common among young cats and is typically quite serious. It can be passed from a mother cat to her kittens through milk and other natural hormones and chemicals. It is also highly contagious and can easily spread from kitten to kitten in a litter as well. Although there is a vaccine against this condition, if it is not given in time and your cat is in an area where he may be exposed to other cats, he is at high risk for contracting this condition.

In addition to yellowish vomit, there are many other signs that you should be aware of if your pet has distemper. Watch out for the following symptoms:
•Fever
•Diarrhea, oftentimes tinged with blood
•Hardening of skin texture
•Paleness of gums, tongue, lips and nose
•Lack of appetite
•Refusal to drink water
•Lethargy
•Comatose state

Treating Cat Seizures With Phenobarbital

Phenobarbital is the number one choice of anti-convulsants for recurrent and uncontrolled feline seizures (such as in epilepsy). It functions as a muscle relaxant and a depressant, thus effectively quelling seizures and helping to stabilize the cat.

Cat Epilepsy vs. Cat Seizures
Seizures are a symptom, and usually caused by a disease other than epilepsy. A cat that has a seizure may not necessarily have epilepsy. Feline seizures can range from unusual mood swings to violent physical convulsions, and often will have an underlying cause. Cancer, metabolic diseases, inflammatory disease or trauma may cause them. Many times, recurrent seizures and fits will vanish after another disorder has been treated.

Epilepsy is the disease described as recurrent and uncontrolled seizures that have no apparent cause. There are two types of epilepsy: idiopathic (primary) epilepsy, and symptomatic (secondary) epilepsy. The first applies to "classic" epilepsy - seizures with no known cause. Trying to prove primary epilepsy is difficult, as cats are more susceptible to seizures when infected with a disease than other animals. More often than not, the epilepsy is the second, more common type of epilepsy that happens when the recurrent seizures become identified as the manifestation of an underlying problem.

As seizures (epileptic or not) are usually caused by a nervous system malfunction, a series of tests are required to properly diagnose the condition. Once diagnosed, phenobarbital may be prescribed to ease the convulsions, while additional medication may be needed to treat the actual disorder causing the seizures.

Phenobarbital for Cats
Phenobarbital is the most widely used barbiturate (nervous system depressant) worldwide. It comes in three forms: tablet, liquid and injection. For cats, injection is the most common method of administration, followed by liquid medication. Phenobarbital has an extraordinarily long half-life, so for many cats, a daily dosage is not required. This is particularly true after several weeks of medication, and the phenobarbital has built up in the cat's system.

How To Care for Himalayan Cats

Caring for Himalayan cats is similar to the care for most feline breeds. However, there are a few unique factors to consider if you are planning to make a Himalayan cat part of your family.

1. Himalayan cats are actually a subcategory of the Persian breed. Persian cats were bred with Siamese cats to acquire their beautiful coloring. Himalayans have the characteristic flat faces and long fur of the Persian breed. Their bodies are well-muscled and lean, despite the puffy appearance.

2. Himalayans tend to have gentle and sweet temperaments and make good pets for many different kinds of families. They tend to have relaxed natures, but also to be playful and active. As a breed, they are affectionate and sweet, if a bit fickle.

3. As with all cat breeds, it is important to provide good basic care for your pet. Your Himalayan should always have fresh water available, be fed healthy food and have access to a clean litter box. Of course, your kitty also needs love, affection and entertainment.

4. A Himalayan's long fur does require some extra care. First, remember that your cat may be sensitive to overly warm weather since he has a very warm coat; make sure you do not leave him ina home without air-conditioning during hot summer months. Alternately, some people get their Persian cats shaved during warm weather, often leaving the ruff and tail untrimmed in a style known as a "lion cut."

5. In addition, a Himalayan cat's fur requires special attention when it comes to grooming. While short-haired cat owners can get away with only an occasional brushing, your Himalayan will need grooming daily. Use a soft brush to remove knots from the cat's fur and to remove excess fur.

Eye on India

India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya),is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Burma and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.

Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four of the world's major religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Zoroastrianism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also helped shape the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom from the mid-19th century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance and led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Raw Food Diet For Cat and Kittens - Taking This One Step Prevents Cat Illness
There is increasing evidence accepted by holistic and traditional veterinarians that turning to a raw food diet for cat and kittens reduces the likelihood of many of today's common cat health problems. Its no secret that our cats are obese, have bladder problems or develop kidney disease or diabetes. Its looking like the same rules that apply to humans apply to cats - high carbohydrate, low protein diets and poor exercise habits lead to disease. The good news is that the number one step holistic vets recommend is that you switch your pet to a raw food diet for cat program.
