What's Your Cat's Preferred Litter Box Type?

Many cat owners experience trouble with kitty not using the cat litter box they've chosen for her. With a little bit of understanding about their cat, the proper cat litter box type can be found quickly for good cat litter box habits.

For starters, evaluate the way your cat eliminates her waste. Does she stand up, or squat down low? Does she do something in between? Does she only stick her hind parts in the box, and keep her front paws outside?

By carefully observing exactly how your kitty does her business, you can make a good guess at the right type of cat litter box for her needs. And if your cat thinks the box suits her, she's going to use it every time.

For cats who stand straight up, there are a few options. One is the covered, or hooded cat litter box. In theory these are perfect, because the enclosure captures urine that would normally fly off into space. The one drawback is that your cat may feel too confined with an enclosed cat litter box. This could be if she's just plain scared of that hole, or she may be too large to comfortably move around inside the space.

The alternative is to purchase a large plastic storage container tub - the kind with a removable lid. Take a saw or other cutting tool, and hack a "U" shaped opening into one end of the tub. The bottom of the "U" should be at least 3 - 4" up to hold in your cat litter. This is easy for kitty to enter and exit, and the really large ones are quite roomy for the biggest cat to move around in. You can either snap the lid in place, or simply put it aside, and leave it as a high-sided open cat litter box.

Some cats really enjoy the automatic, motorized cat litter boxes. They think it's the greatest thing to watch that motor move the rakes across the cat litter field. But other cats are terrified of the noise and movement. Since these are rather pricey, consider your cat's mental health and curiosity factor if you're thinking about purchasing one of these cat litter boxes for her.

And finally, there's the good old-fashioned open cat litter box of varying sizes and colors. If your cat squats properly to void, and doesn't miss, this is your best option as the preferred cat litter box.

And here's a tip if you're raising a litter of kittens: buy disposable aluminum baking pans for the little ones. They're shallow enough for the kittens to easily get in and out of. This encourages good cat litter box habits forever. These can be discarded as the youngsters grow big enough to use a "big kitty" litter box!

Cats: the mere word conjures up images of mystery and beauty, of ancient Egyptian goddesses, of Halloween night and witches on broomsticks. What other animals are so associated with occult imagery, while also being commonplace companions in our daily lives ? Wolves may share a spine-tingling association with ancient legends, from the werewolf to the big bad wolf of fairy tale fame. Dogs may share our lives and can be found in most suburban backyards. Yet only cats move silently and comfortably between the two worlds of the mystic and the mundane. Why do cats fascinate us and why do we love cats so ?

Cats are beautiful. Cat lovers and non-cat lovers alike must admit to the beauty of their large, soulful eyes and lovely faces, their elegant silhouettes, their dainty noses and paws, and their metronomic tails. Cats may have shimmering green eyes, cool blue eyes or surprising yellow eyes. Their fur may be long or short, smooth or bushy, uniformly colored or patterned like tigers or calicos, and come in many shades of orange, yellow, brown, grey, black, and white, or some combination of the above.

Cats are fascinating to watch. We're amused by the comical antics of lively kittens playing, leaping, bounding, and rolling about the floor, sometimes reacting to things that we mere humans can't even perceive. We're entranced by the graceful movements of adult cats, their ability to move silently and stealthily, the ease with which they can leap and climb and walk along sloped surfaces or narrow ledges that only a trained human acrobat would attempt.

Some people admire cats for their mysterious ways and associations with the night and with past ages when magic seemed more possible. Some respect them for their reputation of being aloof loners. Dog people claim that cats, being too independent, view humans with disdain. Cat lovers say that being loved by your cat means much more than being loved by your dog because, while a dog is a social animal who needs a master or pack leader to slavishly follow, the cat is by nature solitary. If a cat craves your companionship it is because she has chosen you and because you have earned her love, trust, respect and affection.

In my own experience, cats are wonderfully loving and affectionate friends. True, they may not be waiting by the door, wagging their tails, when you come home. On the other hand, one of my cats does wait by the door when we come home and our other cat is constantly seeking eye contact with us. As soon as we look at her, she meows to solicit our attention. They both show affection and they love to receive it and few activities are more relaxing than sitting on a sofa stroking a cat for hours on end. Cats are so soft and warm to the touch, and they love to curl up on your lap to be patted and given chin and belly rubs.

In addition to the emotional reasons that so many people love cats, there are also many practical reasons that cats share so many of our lives and homes. They are a very practical choice of house pet, especially for city dwellers. They are small and thus easily adapt to life in a small urban apartment. They don't need to be taken outdoors for daily walks, making them easier to care for than dogs, especially for people who are at work all day or who lack a big yard or who hate to walk in the rain. Cats are also very clean and quiet and they don't track mud onto your carpets, chase cars or bark at passers-by, which could attract the wrath of your neighbors.

Cats are smart and kittens are easily trained to use litter boxes, making them far neater and far easier to assimilate into a household than are puppies. Because of their small size, cats don't eat the quantities of food required by large dogs, making cats more practical than dogs for families with smaller budgets. It's also feasible to share a home with several cats at one time.

Cats were first welcomed into human homes for their ability to kill mice, for their usefulness to humans, but for me this is a negative point. First of all, I see companion animals as independent beings of another species who share our homes. It's an honor to be accepted and trusted by fellow creatures, and my goal is to deserve that trust, to give them a safe and happy home with proper care and plenty of love and affection. They're not here to serve me in some way. Also, as an animal lover, I don't want to see mice killed, and so my cats don't have access to smaller creatures.

Feline Lymphoma Can Go All Over

The number one cause of death in companion animals in this country is cancer. In our feline friends a specific type of cancer, lymphoma, is very common. The disease originates in the lymphocytes (white blood cells) of the immune system and frequently invades the lymph nodes causing them to enlarge.

Dr. Laura Garrett is a veterinary oncologist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana. She says, "lymphoma is common in middle-aged to older cats." Although it usually starts in tissues associated with the immune system (lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and bone marrow), it can set up shop in almost any part of the body because it has basically hijacked the blood supply.

Today, the most common form of lymphoma in cats is the gastro-intestinal variety. Patients present with symptoms such as weight loss, a loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, years ago there was a different kind of lymphoma that predominated.

Multicentric (lymph node invasion) and mediastinal (a structure in the chest) forms used to be the most common. But as less and less cats become infected with the feline leukemia virus, these forms of the disease are less common. "If a young cat is diagnosed with lymphoma it is usually FeLV [feline leukemia virus] positive," explains Dr. Garrett.

This virus is directly linked to most forms of lymphoma, except the gastro-intestinal type that is now most prevalent. A cat infected with FeLV is 77 times more likely to develop lymphoma, and researchers have now shown that the virus can cause certain cells in the body to turn into malignant varieties.

A different type of virus that many cat owners have heard of, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), or more commonly known as "feline AIDS," can also increase the risk of lymphoma developing in infected cats.

Ways to Prevent Feline Leukemia

When a cat has Feline Leukemia, his immune system will be compromised. Apart from this, he also develops anemia and the growth of abnormal tumors. He develops other diseases such as cancer. He will most likely live around 3.5 more years, as a majority of FeLV-infected cats do.

If you are a cat care giver, it is essential for you to know how you can prevent the spread of the disease among cats in your foster cat home. Knowledge and understanding of the disease, as well as other contagious diseases, can certainly be a big factor in lengthening the lives of cats.

Licking is one of the common forms of transmission as FeLV can be acquired through licking. Moreover, placenta-transmission (i.e. mother to baby) is also another common form. Kittens are more vulnerable to the condition because their immune system are still weak until they reach 4 months old, thus resistance to the disease is also not that strong.

The sad truth is that it takes awhile for symptoms to become evident. In fact, it could take months, or even years, before the symptoms show. Unless you get your cat tested, it is unlikely that you will find out if he has FeLV during the first few months that he has it.

How can you keep your cats safe from this rather deadly disease? Below are some of the things that you can do. Actually, these are what you SHOULD do, if you want to keep your cats free from FeLV, and this is particularly important if you have a foster cat home.

Coughing Cat - Mysterious Causes You Must Know

A coughing cat demands cat pet care. The cat does not necessarily mean that the cat is sick or ill. Maybe the cat has diarrhea or maybe there are simply cat hairballs. There are several causes for a coughing cat. They are enumerated here.

Asthma and bronchitis may be a cause for a coughing cat. If asthma is causing the coughing then your cat will be given an x-ray. Your cat will have an inhaler, some asthma medication, and some steroids. Your cat may have bronchitis as shown by the x-ray. This is normally treated with steroids. Some cats may also have allergic reactions to airborne elements which may cause their asthma.

Cat hairballs may be one of the causes. If your cat has long hair then it is very likely that their coughing is caused by falling hair. This is one thing that you can treat at the comfort of your own home. You can purchase one of several over-the-counter remedies for hairballs at your vet's office, pet shop, or pharmacy. If you want to use a natural treatment for your cat's hairballs then you can use papaya treatments instead.

The coughing may be caused by cardiomyopathy. When your cat has this kind of illness, their heart will not pump blood properly. As a result, there will be a build up of pressure. This will cause the fluid in the lungs to be come congested and thus, cause the cat to cough.

My friends at Meow Mix have done it again, they have produced a reality TV show staring 10 homeless cats. All ten cats were chosen from animal shelters from around the country.
The cats are spending their time in a storefront window in New York City. The players are brought to life with the use of voice over and the public votes one of the cats out of the house each week. Sound like something you've watched before?
The best part is when the cats gets voted out of the Meow Mix House they go to an adopted new home and the winner will be the new Meow Mix spokes-cat.

CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE
The kidneys of a cat can become diseased in a number of different ways. Cats can be born with congenital kidney disorders or the kidneys can become damaged due to injuries, infections, kidney stones, tumors and toxins (such as antifreeze). While all of these conditions are life threatening they are, luckily, all fairly uncommon. The kidney condition of cats which is very common is a progressive deterioration of the kidneys with no apparent underlying cause that progresses with age. We refer to this as Chronic Renal Failure (CRF). This condition is the most common cause of death in aged cats. When deterioration of the kidneys occurs, they are not able to function normally. The kidneys have several important functions. They help clear toxic waste products from the body, keep several blood chemicals at normal levels, and control fluid balance to maintain normal hydration. They also produce a hormone necessary for the production of red blood cells and are involved in the regulation of calcium and vitamin D
