By their very nature, cats are excellent hunters who thoroughly
enjoy stalking their prey. For domesticated cats, their "prey"
can be something as simple as an insect or a wind up toy. But,
is it always healthy and normal for a cat to stalk, or is there
ever a reason to be concerned about a stalking cat?

As I commented even domesticated cats have the natural instinct
to hunt and to stalk. With an indoor cat, stalking generally
speaking is not an indication of hunger. More likely they are
stalking their prey out of curiosity or because they simply need
to add a little excitement to their lives. Hunting and stalking
also helps the cat to get a little exercise and also provides a
release for pent up energy.

For the most part, domesticated cats prefer chasing mice or
other small rodents. Some even enjoy stalking and catching
rabbits and birds and they will spend many hours watching their
prey. A domesticated cat that is well fed will generally just
play with the prey rather than try to eat it. In fact, it is
rare for a well cared for domesticated cat to eat its prey. Many
people think cats are cruel because they play with their prey,
but this is just simply the cat's way of satisfying its natural
hunting instinct and of getting exercise.

When a cat uses its stalking skill to hunt for prey, it moves
quietly and attracts very little attention. Cats particularly
enjoy stalking in areas with high grass because it helps prevent
their prey from seeing them. This stalking instinct can be more
than a little disturbing for those cat owners who are also bird
lovers. If a cat has a tendency to stalk wild birds that the cat
owner wants to be left alone, it can be a good idea to tie a
bell around the cat's neck. This will help warn the birds of the
nearby stalking cat although it will of course frustrate the cat
who may try to remove the bell!

Negative Behaviours

Besides destroying the wild bird population with their stalking
and hunting instincts, some cats can begin to exhibit their
stalking behaviours in negative ways. Indoor cats that are the
only cat in the household are most likely to develop negative
stalking behaviours. For example, a cat can learn the patterns
of behaviour of its owner. So, when it hears the owner arrive
home, it might engage in stalking mode and pounce on the owner
and bite them on the ankle when they gets home. This behaviour
is sometimes referred to as predatory-play aggression because it
combines elements of play with elements of predatory behaviour.

When this happens, the owner quite understandably becomes upset.
The owner might tell the cat off or even spray them with water
to attempt to make the cat stop the behaviour. However, this
will rarely succeed in modifying the cat's behaviour

Modifying Stalking Behaviour

Indoor cats tend to engage predatory-play aggressive behaviour
more than outdoor cats. This is because indoor cats are more
likely to become bored. In addition, outdoor cats have a far
greater number of options for fulfilling their predatory
behaviour. These include stalking small outdoor animals,
insects, and birds.

For the indoor cat, however, buying some toys that the cat can
stalk is a good idea. These give the cat the opportunity to
engage in its natural predatory instincts in a healthy way. The
cat should have access to toys that both involve the owner and
those that do not. Toys that involve the owner help to create a
bond between the pet and its owner. On the other hand, cats also
need to learn how to engage in solitary play and this includes
stalking and other predatory behaviours.

Choosing Toys

Toys that are lightweight and easy to move are the best types of
toys to help the cat engage in its stalking behaviour. Bouncy
toys are also a good choice, as are toys that hand from the top
of doors or from doorknobs. Toys that hang from other items
should be moved around the house, however, to help keep the
cat's environment different and enriching. Toys can even be
hidden in places such as laundry baskets to add to the
excitement.

Toys that resemble the natural prey of cats, such as mice, are
also good choices. In addition, toys should be large enough to
prevent choking, but small enough to be easily moved by the cat.
The material used to create the toy should also be
indestructible. Otherwise the cat, particularly kittens, will
destroy the toy. This is not only messy, but also poses as a
choking hazard.

A cat that is properly stimulated with toys that allow it to
utilize its stalking skills will be far healthier than one that
is not. In addition, the cat will be far less likely to pounce
on or harm the owner or the owner's furnishings!

If your child misses a lot of school due to illness, maybe you should get a cat. Research has shown that children who own pets attend school up to 9 more days a year than their non pet-owning counterparts. The immune function of pet owners is more stable, making them better able to fend off illness. Pet owners visit doctors less.

But what about allergies? Isn't cat hair is a common source of irritation to immune systems? A leading theory under investigation by asthma researchers suggests that the presence of pets in the home from an early age may adapt the immune system so it is less sensitive to allergens later in life. So it may in fact be the lack of pets in a child's life that contributes to asthma sensitivities.

Studies have also connected pet ownership with lower blood pressure and reduced anxiety levels. In fact, a recent long-term study has shown that people who have never owned a cat, face a 40% greater risk of death due to heart attack than current and even previous cat owners. Dog owners did not have the same level of protection against heart disease as cat owners.

State University of New York researchers found that the cat doesn't even have to be present to achieve this. A group of stockbrokers with hypertension who owned pets showed lower blood pressure even when not with their cats.

It is well known that cat owners have lower stress levels overall, so perhaps the health advantages are a result of being more relaxed.

Cat ownership may be a surprising remedy for absenteeism, however, good health and more days at school are just two of the many benefits to children of having a cat in their lives. Studies have associated numerous psychological benefits with pet ownership.

Children who live with cats show more empathy for others and help others more. This translates to being able to understand others and get along better. Children who live with animals develop a better understanding of body language and other non-verbal cues. A study of 455 school children between the ages of 11 and 16 revealed that children with pets had a better ability to understand non-verbal communications. As a result, these children are more popular with classmates than those who don't have pets at home.

Additionally, children who own pets are more likely to be involved in sports, hobbies, clubs and other social activities. Some studies even show that children who own cats have a higher IQ.

Children with pets learn develop an early sense of responsibility. The responsibility of owning a pet can give children the experience of being needed and this may translate into other areas of life. Cats are relatively easy to care for, as they clean themselves and don't need to be walked.

Social skills and responsibility make a great foundation for life. A US study of 394 university students revealed that those who had owned dogs or cats as childhood pets were more self-confident than those who did not. This may be related to other findings that children raised with pets have higher self-esteem, thought to result from the unconditional love a pet provides. No matter what's going on at school, or with friends, pets treat children the same way.

It seems obvious to say then, that pets hold an important place in many children's lives, often on a par with parents, grandparents and siblings. Children often talk to their pets and regard them as an important friends and confidantes. A five-year study of 600 children aged 3-18 years showed that pet-owning children who have challenges such as being slow learners or having divorced parents cope better with life than those who don't have a pet. Again, having a pet that shows unconditional love regardless of what is happening, can cushion other difficulties in life.

It's not surprising that pets have been used successfully in therapy for some time now. They help sick kids relax and take their minds off their illnesses. Some doctors, recognizing the importance of pets in children's lives ensure that pet names are included in their patients' medical records along with other family members. Even in the most depressing clinical environment, talking about a pet can lighten a situation.

If you already have cat members of your family, know that they are doing your children the world of good. If you don't, it's worth serious consideration.

When The Indoor Kitty Decides to Escape

I think that the most frightening thing that can happen to an indoor cat owner is to have their dearly beloved cat escape out the door. Whether it is an accident, where the cat broke through a screen, or someone leaving the door ajar and the cat's curiosity got the best of it. It is an experience that can make even the bravest of cat owners fall to their knees.

However, accidents do happen, no matter how careful we are. So what should a cat owner do first? In some instances prepare yourself for a long day or night of endless searching and calling.

Many studies have shown that indoor cats often show certain types of behavior when they find themselves in strange and unknown territory.

Most often they will go into what is called a "shut down mode" which is a type of self-preservation mode due to the fact that they are frightened and overwhelmed.

Most indoor-only cats have never seen the new sights and sounds of the outdoors and the experience is not only over whelming, but also down right scary.

If you are lucky enough to see your cat escape, keep a watchful eye on where it is going if it is at all possible. A frightened cat generally will not come when called, and now that you are outside, you too, are considered a scary person by the cat.

An indoor-only cat's first impulse is to hide somewhere that is why if you can keep your eye on the escapee you have a better chance of catching him/her.

A word of warning here, however, even if you know where Kitty is hiding, the chances of him/her coming into your arms willingly are slim and none.

First try offering food or treats, should you get no response do not be dismayed, as your cat may just be too frightened or distracted and does not realize you are its friend and not an enemy. If you try to grab the cat or make a fast motion toward it, you are only frightening it more. Talking softly and moving slowly will work better; again, keep in mind that Kitty is frightened and when you try to pick him/her up, Kitty may scratch or bite. This is a defense mechanism and has nothing to do with you. Remember how you would react if someone came toward you when you were frightened, how would you react?

If you know where Kitty is and if you can leave your door open, try to position yourself behind Kitty and sort of nudge the cat toward home territory. Again talking softly and no fast or sudden moves as you encourage the cat toward the house.

Cats have A, B and AB (rare) blood types. Most cats in the United States have type A blood - something like 99% of domestic shorthair cats have Type A blood. This ratio varies from country to country. Other cat breeds have a much higher incidence of Type B blood. As the popularity of purebred cats increases it is likely that the ratio of cats with Type B blood will also increase.

There is no "universal donor" blood type in cats - a very small amount of the wrong blood type can kill a cat if is is sensitized to the blood. This can be an issue in some cat breeds. In particular, British Shorthair, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex cats, where the percentage of Type B cats is much higher, perhaps as high as 50%. Other breeds with significant percentages of Type B blood include the Abyssinian, Himalayan, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, Somali and Sphinx breeds. Complete Blood Count
The complete blood count is a blood test that is very frequently employed to inform the vet about the amount of different types of cells in the blood flow of the cat.

The red blood cell count as well as the white blood cell count and the hemoglobin are important values to determine the condition of the cat. Red blood cells transport the oxygen to the vital organs, while white cells help fighting infections.
