Training a Cat to do Tricks

Are the tricks that your cat are doing, are these tricks that you approve of your cat doing or are they bad habits or behaviors? Did you know that you are able to teach a cat the difference between good tricks and bad tricks?

Teaching tricks to your cat and depending on the trick, the task can be easy one. Jumping in a hoop, or over a stick, sitting, or meowing, are all good tricks to teach them. With the different tricks, this will help show behaviors that you approve of. Also, could help keep the cat from climbing on furniture, drapes, and counter.

When training a cat a new trick, you will want to reward the cat with something that the cat can identify with, for the behavior. A good healthy treat is a good reward sources, small liver biscuits or a simple massage is another good way for your cat to know that this is a good behavior. You will want to keep the snack simple and small and some times, they may earn more than one treat. By touching your cat, petting, massage, or just holding your cat, this is a way that both of you and your cat can show each other's affection. Once the cat learns a new trick or behavior, then you will be able to reduce the snack. In addition, in time you will not have to reward your cat for tricks or behaviors that you had taught them.

Let us look at a new trick getting your cat to jump over a stick. Each time the cat jumps over the stick you will want to reward them. Another good reason you want to teach your cat to jump over the stick, and hopefully this will help if your cat is not jumping off the counter top or table.

First, get your cat near the stick and let them explore the stick. Next, you will want to coax your cat to step over the stick A good way to do this is put a piece of pop corn on the opposite side of the stick , from where the cat is. Each time your cat takes a step over the stick, you can reward them with a treat. Continue in steps to play with the cat and the stick. Continue to raise the stick so that the cat can eventually jump over the stick in order to get the piece of pop corn. If the cat does not jump over then no treat is given. Remember to reward your cat when they do the step to a new trick Finally they will be able to do the full trick with knowing that there will be a treat on the other side.

Another trick that is simple to train your cat is to get the cat's favorite small toy, put a piece of yarn around it, and drag the toy on the floor. You cat should be following the toys and should be jumping at it as if it was hunting. Cats love to play hunt with things that move. They will pounce, jump, and run after it. Teaching your cat to sit at right times is another trick to teach them. There are different ways that this can be done. Teach your cat its proper name first then use the sit teaching this will be much easier. Training a cat to sit can be done the same way as training other pet animals to sit. You may have to take the cat and get it to sit first by positioning it in the sitting position, and give treat for the good work.

Teaching cats new tricks can be fun. Remember to be patience and kind to your cat and your cat will be your friend for ever.

Caring For An Older Cat - Cat Health And Cat Care
Cats are living longer lives thanks to dedicated care from their humans, and advances in veterinary medicine. Most experts consider a cat's "senior years" to begin on her 10th birthday. After this point, the aging process begins to slow in even the most playful feline. Yet, with a little extra attention from her owner, Miss Kitty might enjoy another 5-10 years of life and love.

Domestic Long Hair - the Facts Every Owner of This Cat Breed Should Know
The Domestic Long Hair is the same breed of cat as the Domestic Short Hair, but with longer fur. The name Domestic Long Hair is given to cats whose parentage is in question; otherwise, it is referred to as an American Long Hair and only American Long Hairs can be show cats.

Important Cat Litter Box Health Concerns

Cats are the most popular pets in the United States. According to the latest version of the U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook (2002 Edition) there were almost 70 Million pet cats in the United States. Why are cats so popular? There are as many answers to this question as there are cat owners, but the low health risks cats pose to their owners is certainly near the top of this list. Even though the potential health risks cats pose to people are small, it is important that cat owners are aware of these risks and understand how to reduce them.

The majority of all risks stemming from cat ownership are associated with the cat litter box and/or cat feces. There are two categories of risks. The first category contains health risks posed by bacteria and parasites to both cat owners and their cats. The second category contains injuries resulting from an automatic litter box or self cleaning litter box.

Primarily the health problems experienced by cat owners or their cats come from the first category and the most significant of these risks is called Toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a tiny parasite called Toxoplasma gondii which can be found in raw or undercooked meat, unwashed fruits and vegetables, dirty cat litter boxes and outdoor soil where cat feces can be found. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than 60 million people in the United States may be infected with the Toxoplasma parasite(1). Fortunately, very few people ever experience any symptoms because a healthy person's immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness. However, pregnant women and individuals who have compromised immune systems, such as individuals infected with the HIV virus, are at risk and should take precautions to avoid being infected by the parasite. For people in this group a Toxoplasma infection could cause serious health problems to the individual or to a pregnant woman’s unborn child.

Again, most of the 60 million plus American’s infected with Toxoplasmosis parasite will never experience any symptoms. Most of those who do experience symptoms will simply think they have the Flu as the most common symptoms include swollen glands, fever, headache, muscle pain, or a stiff neck. For those in the high risk group, Toxoplasmosis can cause damage to the brain, eyes and internal organs. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, children born with Toxoplasma gondii can suffer from hearing loss, mental retardation, and blindness with some children developing brain or eye problems years after birth(2). The CDC estimates that 400-4000 fetuses are infected with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite each year and as many as 80 infants die from Toxoplasmosis annually (2).

So how does an individual contract Toxoplasmosis? A Toxoplasmosis infection is caused by ingesting the Toxoplasma gondi parasite. Most cat owners are infected with the parasite by accidentally ingesting infected cat feces. This happens when a person touches their mouth after handling a cat litter box, working in a garden or sand box or touching anything that has come in contact with cat feces

Multi-Vitamin for Cats

Many pet owners wish to provide their animals with the best health possible by giving them a multi-vitamin for cats. Cats require a certain careful balance of vitamins and minerals as well as other nutrients in order to function at their best. By ingesting the proper combination of these vitamins, your cat will remain healthy and strong and is more likely to enjoy a long, happy, and illness free life.

The exact vitamins which your cat will need are slightly different from the vitamins which you may see in a human multi-vitamin supplement, however, so it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the basics of feline nutrition before you purchase anything.

Benefits of Multi-Vitamins for Cats
Ideally, a good cat food will provide your pet with all of the different vitamins and nutrients that he needs. However, there are a number of reasons why he may still require a vitamin supplement as well. First, many cat foods do not provide the highest quality nutrients as a result of lower quality ingredients in the food. Second, sitting on the shelf for weeks or even longer can mean that the vitamins and nutrients which are naturally in cat food are reduced in quantity, thereby not giving your cat the nutrition he requires. For this reason, multi-vitamins are a good supplement to help your cat overall.

Components of a Cat Good Multi-Vitamin Cats require certain enzymes and amino acids that can only be found in meat sources. For this reason, cats that do not eat meat will not be healthy and, ultimately, will not survive. Thus, many of the multi-vitamin supplements that are available for cats focus on some of these types of nutrients which are usually found in meat sources. These include:

Your Guide to Home Remedies For Cat Urinary Tract Infections

Home remedies for cat urinary tract infections are very effective at treating and preventing this common medical problem. In this article, you'll learn more about home remedies, the best ingredients and why they are much more effective than drugs.

First, let's talk about antibiotics. It's unfortunate, but most of us have been sold a bill of goods by the drug companies. Look at all the advertising they do. No wonder they've managed to program us. There are three things you need to know about the use of antibiotics in treating cat urinary tract infections:
Antibiotics suppress symptoms, but do not heal the conditions that caused them. Antibiotics have side effects which can make your cat's condition worse. Plus, we all know how sensitive cats are.

Since antibiotics do not heal cat urinary tract infections, this can lead to recurring problems.

Natural Treatment for Cat Urinary Tract Infections
Contrast the points above with the points below (note: we are talking about using a homeopathic remedy that is specifically formulated to treat cat urinary problems):

Cat Blood Types

Cats have A, B and AB (rare) blood types. Most cats in the United States have type A blood - something like 99% of domestic shorthair cats have Type A blood. This ratio varies from country to country. Other cat breeds have a much higher incidence of Type B blood. As the popularity of purebred cats increases it is likely that the ratio of cats with Type B blood will also increase.

There is no "universal donor" blood type in cats - a very small amount of the wrong blood type can kill a cat if is is sensitized to the blood. This can be an issue in some cat breeds. In particular, British Shorthair, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex cats, where the percentage of Type B cats is much higher, perhaps as high as 50%. Other breeds with significant percentages of Type B blood include the Abyssinian, Himalayan, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, Somali and Sphinx breeds. (preceding information from Urs Giger, University of Pennsylvania, Kirk's XI).

If a Type B queen (mother cat) gives birth to Type A kittens, severe reactions can occur in the kittens

Lab Blood Work Tests for Cats

Cats require blood work tests when they need to diagnosed for different diseases. Blood tests are widely used in veterinary medicine. The results are measured against normal values, which are typically present in healthy pets; these values differ across species. The lab test results may be influenced by certain drugs, so always inform your vet about the medication of your pet prior to blood tests. Prior to certain blood tests, your cat should fast.

Complete Blood Count
The complete blood count is a blood test that is very frequently employed to inform the vet about the amount of different types of cells in the blood flow of the cat.

The red blood cell count as well as the white blood cell count and the hemoglobin are important values to determine the condition of the cat. Red blood cells transport the oxygen to the vital organs, while white cells help fighting infections.

A low red blood cell count can indicate anemia, while a high amount of white blood cells can indicate an infection or a viral disease.

Platelets help the blood to clot. If the platelet count is low the cat may have a destroyed bone marrow or an autoimmune disease.

Hematocrit or packed cell volume (PCV) may also measure the red blood cell count.

Commonly Performed Blood Tests There are numerous tests that can be performed on a cat to determine his health condition. Some tests will show how a particular organ functions, while other tests will give a general overview.

The following tests are most commonly performed in felines:

Finding A Cat Breed That Best For You

If the dog is the best friend of man, then cats are a man's caprice.

In addition to being expensive, purebred cats are difficult to treat because they require their owner's love and attention. Cats are like babies, because they are fed, sometimes bathed, combed with and cared for have played.

Cats are best bought responsible cat breeders. Hobbyists choose cats to own because their temperaments are more predictable than cats with unknown pedigree.

If you found a cat in a cat breeder, ask about the number of breeds of cats it so you can choose from them. Also, ask how many years he has been breeding cats and whether he can give you a health guarantee and complete documents for the cat.

Top cat breeds
If you want to show off your cat then it are preferable to choose among the top five cat breeds throughout the world.

1. Persian-Persian cat is called Persian for their country of origin. Persians have a long coat, sweet personality and ability to blend into the household. It is these qualities that Persians one of the top choices of cat lovers. However, his long hair requires daily combing to avoid confusion.

Persian Cat Grooming

Persians require grooming. A wide-metal greyhound comb is suggested and should be combed through the coat daily from the root to the end. Don't forget the chest area, behind the ears and up under the armpits.

Frequency of baths depend on each individual cat's fur. Dilute coated cats tend to be able to go longer between baths yet they mat up faster. Silk coats tend to look string faster- yet hardly ever mat and knot.

Some Persians require baths bi-weekly, while others can go up to six weeks between before even looking dirty.

To the untrained eye, a Persian cat most likely will appear clean even when dirty. Show cats are degreased and bathed to look their very best. The coat of a well- groomed Persian will not look separated or greasy. Many breeders degrease with either Dawn or Joy dishwashing liquid in the bath water or Goop on a dry coat. But be careful, because degreasing can also strip a coat if moisture is not replenished when weekly show baths are given.

Each color of coat may require a different Cat Shampoo. For example, Whites need a shampoo with a brightening or bluing formula to whiten the coat. Blacks need to be darkened and spared from too much light and drying. Tabbies require their bars to be enriched and Reds need to redden the orange appearance. Bicolor's and Dilutes require a shampoo to bring out the color they have the most of, keeping in mind to also brighten the white. Shampoos are sold with colors of coats in mind and will specify exactly what they are intended to do. Our Oatmeal Almond can take care of any coat color and texture.

Mats need to be removed before the bath or they will become worse. Never cut them out with a sharp-pointed tool such as scissors...you could cut the kitty if he jumps. Rip them apart into little knots and try working them out with a comb or your fingers. Sometimes powder can help too.

Grooming Tips for Preventing Matted Cat Hair

Matted cat hair is entangled hair that ends up in tight knots. Long haired breeds are more susceptible to the condition than other pets. Cat hair is divided into three categories as each type of hair performs a certain role. The types of cat hair include awn hair, down hair and guard hair. The various function of cat hair involves protection from environmental contaminants, heat and cold. The uppermost layer of cat hair also determines the color of individual pets.

Cat Hair Conditions
Cats shed their fur during specific periods. However, fur loss that's caused due to skin conditions such as alopecia, dermatitis or skin allergy needs medical treatment. Although cats routinely groom themselves to maintain their fur coats, pets also develop conditions such as cat hairball due to the ingestion of hair during routine grooming. Pet owners should thus groom the cat with a brush to avoid excessive self-grooming and cat hairballs. Cats that appear sick or lethargic may avoid their routine grooming which in turn leads to matted hair. Thick knots are difficult to detangle with a comb and may cause the pet pain, if the mats are located towards sensitive areas of the body.

Teacup Kittens - The World's Smallest Kitten
Not all cats advertised as miniature are teacup kittens. Be aware that the standard size female cat will weight about 11 to 14 pounds. The standard size male cat will weight about 12 to 17 pounds. A teacup size female cat will weight about 3 to 6.5 pounds and the teacup size male will weight about 3 to 7.5 pounds. This is a good rule-of-thumb to keep in mind when shopping for a teacup. Some unscrupulous breeders will try to sell you a cat under ten pounds as a teacup when that weight falls within the normal weight range for a standard cat. When shopping for a teacup do not be fooled by a breeder that will try to sell you a runt or tell you that any cat less than ten pounds is a miniature.

Cat Boredom Busters
Boredom is not uncommon in indoor cats. Though indoor cats are known to sleep a large portion of the day, when awake they should keep busy hunting, playing, and defending territory by peering out windows, exploring any open cupboard or dark cubbyhole, and climbing up to elevated vantage points. When your cat is not doing these things, examine her environment and even your methods of care. Something may not be right.

The Secret Of Clumping Cat Litter
Before the latter half of the 1900's, cat litter boxes are filled with sand, soil, and plant shavings. But the obvious tiresome task of cleaning litter boxes using these materials had resulted into much disgust, if not abhorrence, from cat owners. So someone came out with using a type of litter box filling made up clay minerals that absorb water; thereby isolating cat wastes. But still, this clay material did not satisfy cat owners for long as it collects urine and fecal moisture at the bottom of the litter box, becoming a cesspool of bacteria that produce foul-smelling ammonia.

House Cat Training: Deal With Play Fighting and Spraying
Ok it's a fact that most cats like to play around, running here and there, scratching furniture or biting you. But Sometimes cats can be so energetic that can cause damage when playing. And what about spraying? All cats spray their territory to mark it and make it their own. Do you have a house training tactic to deal with these issues?

The increased availability and advances made in animal care and medication has now afforded our pet cats a much longer life than ever before. It is not so unusual these days for a cat to live well beyond 16 years of age and as much as we benefit from having our pets with us longer, it does give rise to some health problems associated with the older cat.

Tips on how to keep your pets safe during cold weather:
1. Watch the forecast for sub-25 temperatures. - Don’t allow domestic animals (cats, dogs, rabbits) to be in exposed environments under 25 degrees Fahrenheit. At temperatures above 25, provide them with some sort of shelter. A three-sided shelter is fine as long as the animals can get out of the wind and cold. Insulated shelters are preferred, and the animals should have a bedding liner. For sub-25 weather, try to bring animals to a protected environment, such as a garage or basement.
