Toxoplasmosis is found all over the world and infects about 30 percent of the feline population and 50 percent of the human population. In adults, it rarely causes any signs or symptoms because the immune system is usually strong enough to control the organism. Although it does not affect healthy adults, it can affect adults whose immune systems are compromised and unborn offspring of humans and animals that are exposed to the disease.
 
Dr. Christine Merle, a veterinarian at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana, says, "Toxoplasmosis is caused by a single-celled organism that is transmitted through the feces of infected animals, usually cats, and through raw meat, particularly venison and pork." The organism can also be found in soil that has been contaminated with the feces of an animal that is infected with the disease. Cats are the primary carriers of the disease, and usually contract it from eating birds, mice, and other small animals or through eating scraps of uncooked meat.
 
In humans, a mild infection manifests as flu-like symptoms accompanied by swollen lymph glands and muscle aches and pains that can last as long as several weeks. Although the organism usually does not cause any harm in adults, people and animals with immature immune systems, such as unborn children, can develop brain damage or blindness from the disease. Individuals who have compromised immune systems, such as people who have the AIDS virus, are also at risk and should take precautions to avoid the disease.
 
Because toxoplasmosis is so prevalent, there is a good chance that a woman who becomes pregnant may have already been exposed to the disease. If she has been exposed, then her body will have built up an immune response to fight off the disease and antibodies will be present in her blood that will be passed to the unborn child, making him or her immune to the disease before birth.
 
A simple blood test called a titer can be performed to determine the presence of antibodies in the blood. If they are present, there is no need for the woman to take special precautions to avoid the disease because the unborn child is already protected. If there are no antibodies present, then the mother must take precautions to make sure that she does not come in contact with the disease while she is pregnant.
 
There are many things that can be done can do to avoid this parasite. The handling of raw meat should be avoided or, if this is impossible, gloves can be worn and all surfaces and kitchen utensils that may have touched the meat should be disinfected afterwards. Any meat that is consumed should be cooked thoroughly until it is no longer pink.
 
Cats are major carriers of this parasite, so pregnant woman should avoid cleaning litter boxes. If handling the litter box is unavoidable, gloves should be worn, and the hands should be washed thoroughly afterwards. The box should be cleaned every day because the eggs are not infective until 24 hours or more after being passed in the stool.
 
Dr. Merle says, "Cats and other animals may also use gardens and sandboxes as litter boxes, so pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems should wear gloves when working in soil and wash the hands thoroughly afterwards."
 
If you are a healthy adult who is not pregnant and you think that you may have contracted toxoplasmosis, chances are no treatment will be needed and symptoms of the parasite will subside within a few weeks. If you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system and you think that you may have come into contact with the disease, contact your health care provider to discuss treatment.

How Sensitive Is A Cat's Taste?

Since a cat's sense of hearing and smelling is more sensitive than ours is, it's reassuring to discover that in one respect leastways we have got superior sense organs. When it comes to the sense of taste, our tongues are somewhat more adept than theirs. However, just only slightly. Similar to us, cats are responsive to four primary tastes...sour, bitter, salt and sweet. We react to all four in a strong matter, but cats are lacking when it comes to sweet tastes. They don't have our 'sweet tooth'.

Until recently it was believed by many experts that cats were practically the only animal among mammals that wasn't capable of determining sweet tastes. One stated, with no expertise, 'The cat doesn't display any response to sweet tastes'. Another one stated, 'Sweet tastes can't be recognized by the cat'. This age-old belief now needs to be put away. Recent tests have proven clearly that cats can recognize sweet tastes. If milk is watered down to one quarter of its normal strength, and a hungry cat is then offered an option between the watery milk laced with sucrose versus the same milk with no sweetener, they will without fail, choose the sweet dishes.

If this is the case, how come it has been rejected in the past? The answer lies in the fact that in almost all tests cats disregard the sweetness factor when making a choice. It's such a small significance to them they all but ignore it. If, for instance, they're tested with whole or even half and half milk, they express no preference for the more sweetened examples. Their reaction to the milk itself is too strong. Only if the milk factor is considerably diluted does the sweetness factor start to show up. And so, while cats do savor the taste, they do so at a really modest dismantle.

Sour taste is a cat's foremost reaction; followed by bitter, then salt and the last one is sweet. As food touches the tongue it comes in contact with sensory papillae there. These papillae (nubs) are strong, rough and backward pointing and are located in the middle of the tongue. In this area, there's a specialization of the tongue's surface that doesn't have anything to do with taste. So, there aren't any taste buds in this central area. It's a zone related solely with scraping meat from bones or with cleaning fur. The taste buds are limited to the tip, the sides and the back of the tongue only.

Cat Blood Types

Cats have A, B and AB (rare) blood types. Most cats in the United States have type A blood - something like 99% of domestic shorthair cats have Type A blood. This ratio varies from country to country. Other cat breeds have a much higher incidence of Type B blood. As the popularity of purebred cats increases it is likely that the ratio of cats with Type B blood will also increase.

There is no "universal donor" blood type in cats - a very small amount of the wrong blood type can kill a cat if is is sensitized to the blood. This can be an issue in some cat breeds. In particular, British Shorthair, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex cats, where the percentage of Type B cats is much higher, perhaps as high as 50%. Other breeds with significant percentages of Type B blood include the Abyssinian, Himalayan, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, Somali and Sphinx breeds. Lab Blood Work Tests for Cats

Cats require blood work tests when they need to diagnosed for different diseases. Blood tests are widely used in veterinary medicine. The results are measured against normal values, which are typically present in healthy pets; these values differ across species. The lab test results may be influenced by certain drugs, so always inform your vet about the medication of your pet prior to blood tests. Prior to certain blood tests, your cat should fast.

Complete Blood Count
The complete blood count is a blood test that is very frequently employed to inform the vet about the amount of different types of cells in the blood flow of the cat.

The red blood cell count as well as the white blood cell count and the hemoglobin are important values to determine the condition of the cat. Red blood cells transport the oxygen to the vital organs, while white cells help fighting infections.

A low red blood cell count can indicate anemia, while a high amount of white blood cells can indicate an infection or a viral disease.

Platelets help the blood to clot. If the platelet count is low the cat may have a destroyed bone marrow or an autoimmune disease.

Hematocrit or packed cell volume (PCV) may also measure the red blood cell count.

Commonly Performed Blood Tests There are numerous tests that can be performed on a cat to determine his health condition. Some tests will show how a particular organ functions, while other tests will give a general overview.

Focus On Cat Breeds

Persian Cat Grooming

Persians require grooming. A wide-metal greyhound comb is suggested and should be combed through the coat daily from the root to the end. Don't forget the chest area, behind the ears and up under the armpits.

Frequency of baths depend on each individual cat's fur. Dilute coated cats tend to be able to go longer between baths yet they mat up faster. Silk coats tend to look string faster- yet hardly ever mat and knot.

Some Persians require baths bi-weekly, while others can go up to six weeks between before even looking dirty.

To the untrained eye, a Persian cat most likely will appear clean even when dirty. Show cats are degreased and bathed to look their very best. The coat of a well- groomed Persian will not look separated or greasy. Many breeders degrease with either Dawn or Joy dishwashing liquid in the bath water or Goop on a dry coat. But be careful, because degreasing can also strip a coat if moisture is not replenished when weekly show baths are given.

Each color of coat may require a different Cat Shampoo. For example, Whites need a shampoo with a brightening or bluing formula to whiten the coat. Blacks need to be darkened and spared from too much light and drying. Tabbies require their bars to be enriched and Reds need to redden the orange appearance. Bicolor's and Dilutes require a shampoo to bring out the color they have the most of, keeping in mind to also brighten the white. Shampoos are sold with colors of coats in mind and will specify exactly what they are intended to do. Our Oatmeal Almond can take care of any coat color and texture.

Mats need to be removed before the bath or they will become worse. Never cut them out with a sharp-pointed tool such as scissors...you could cut the kitty if he jumps. Rip them apart into little knots and try working them out with a comb or your fingers. Sometimes powder can help too.

Cat hair is divided into three categories as each type of hair performs a certain role. The types of cat hair include awn hair, down hair and guard hair. The various function of cat hair involves protection from environmental contaminants, heat and cold. The uppermost layer of cat hair also determines the color of individual pets.

Cat Hair Conditions
Cats shed their fur during specific periods. However, fur loss that's caused due to skin conditions such as alopecia, dermatitis or skin allergy needs medical treatment. Although cats routinely groom themselves to maintain their fur coats, pets also develop conditions such as cat hairball due to the ingestion of hair during routine grooming. Pet owners should thus groom the cat with a brush to avoid excessive self-grooming and cat hairballs. Cats that appear sick or lethargic may avoid their routine grooming which in turn leads to matted hair. Thick knots are difficult to detangle with a comb and may cause the pet pain, if the mats are located towards sensitive areas of the body.
