The Woes of Cat Hair and How to Control It

Cat hair gets everywhere. In the bedding, on the screens, deep in the carpet, and of course, on clothes. While the hair is not an allergen, the danderand allergens stick to it so we sneeze. As an owner of two beautiful long-hair cats, I'm inundated with cat hair.

I end up covered with cat hair as soon as I get out of the shower, and even when I'm cooking. It can be a real mess! So, how do I keep it down, and what makes things worse?

Spray a light mist of water over the floor, then, sweep up the hair with a broom and dust pan and put it in the trash. After that, damp mop, don't use a dry dust mop. They will catch a little of the hair, then start pushing the hair around. It will be so full of hair, you'll have to toss it. Those dust mop heads stir up more hair than they pick up. Using a damp paper towel over a sponge mop is much better.

First of all, never, ever stir up the hair. A damp towel on the end of a broom helps take it off the walls, picture frames and moulding. A damp sponge helps remove it from furniture and clothes.

Rugs are a completely different story. Put a light mist of water over the carpet, then rub a damp sponge mop over the carpet. Then, use the best vacuum you can find. Go over the rug or carpet several times. You will need to change bags at least once, if it's a bag model. Put a filter over the air return so that you don't end up putting cat hair back into the air.

Once you have the hair picked up and off the furniture, rugs and walls, treat everything with an anti-static spray or wipe it down with a dryer sheet. This makes the next round of cat hair easier to remove. You can make your own dryer sheet by using a washcloth, liquid softener and a dryer. Use just enough of the softener liquid to lightly dampen the washcloth and dry it before use.

Clothing can be taped, wiped down and laundered. I've tried several of those little balls you throw into the washer and dryer to collect the hair and had little results. The best way I've found to remove the hair is to damp sponge items before throwing them in the washer and picking off the hair balls that show up after the dryer. I keep the lint filter cleaned and clean it out midway through the drying cycle. Always tell your dry cleaner about the cat hair. They can remove the hair and treat your clothes to make hair removal easier the next time.

Some items need special care. A sewing machine should have a cover. When cat hair gets in the inner workings and combines with the oils present for lubrication, the machine stops working or burns up the motor. Stereo and video equipment should be wiped down daily. A computer will draw the hair inside because of the cooling fan. Use canned air to clean it weekly. This will greatly prolong the life of your computer. Televisions collect hair in the back workings and need to be blown out weekly. Wall and space heaters should be cleaned before use to prevent fires. Area and room fans need to be kept clean. The work better that way. Clean the blades regularly and keep all grills free of hair.

You can deal with the cat hair at the source. Run damp hands along your cat and remove a lot of loose hair that way. You can also use a rubber brush.

I recently got a memory foam pad for my bed, and the cats love it. They act like it's catnip! There is a chemical odor to the foam that draws the cats. Because it's foam, it grabs the hair from the cats. You can try wood combs, plastic combs and rubber brushes. A trick I learned a long time ago was to spray hairspray on a comb and then spray it again. The sticky surface grabs hair. Try this on your favorite brush.

You can try supplements to the cats diet, including oils and vitamins that decrease shedding. Of course, you can wash your cat with a gentle shampoo.

If your cat gets a mat in her fur, use a sewing tool! Get a sharp seam ripper with a ball on the point. Work from the outer-most parts of the mat in, and loosen small sections at a time. If the mat is free and small, you can cut it off, but be prepared for more mats in that location as the hair grows in. Comb the area regularly.

If the mat is bad enough to pull the skin, it really needs to be removed. Large mats can be made easier to handle by cutting the outer parts off and then work with the seam ripper closer to the skin. If the mats are exceptionally large or pulling on several parts of the skin, the cat needs to see a groomer to have the mats removed. My persian cat, Squeaky, first showed up with mats on both sides, his belly and back. I had him groomed, and they shaved him into a lion cut. He was much happier.

Regular grooming is your best defense against cat hair. It will reduce the hair coming from the cat and make the cleaning up much easier.

Yes, cat hair is a pain -- a pain I'm willing to live with.

In 1986 in Northern California a disease that was causing illness and death in cats was found to be caused by a virus similar to HIV, or the AIDS virus found in humans. There has also been little success in finding methods to treat those cats that have the disease, but we DO know enough about the disease to safeguard our pets from this fatal disorder.

How to Clean Cat Urine

When cat urine seeps through carpet, into padding and down to the floor beneath, it can give your home an unpleasant aroma (to say the very least!). In almost all cases, cat urine is the worst perpetrator of pet stains and pet odors. If you own a cat, it's important for you to know how to clean cat urine stains.

The color of cat urine and its staining potential will often depend on dietary habits, age and sex of the cat, whether the cat is on medication, and the health of the cat. Urine can saturate absorbent materials such as carpet and padding, upholstery and mattresses well beyond the surface area that can effectively be cleaned. It is extremely difficult to remove all of the urine from inside of these materials. Even after a thorough cleaning, stains and odors often remain.

Tips on how to clean cat urine from the carpet:

Removing cat urine from your carpet can be one of the most difficult cleaning tasks, since it produce an especially persistent, unpleasant odor and amber-colored stains, so here are a few things you can do to eliminate them, when the "accident" is happens.

First, blot up as much of the urine as possible with a soft, clean white cloth or absorbent paper towel. Press down firmly (do not rub) for 30 seconds. The more fresh urine you can remove before it dries, the simpler it will be to remove the odor. Remove the towel and repeat the process until the area is fully dried. Rinse the "accident zone" thoroughly with clean, cool water. After rinsing, remove as much of the water as possible by blotting it up. Next, you have some options on how to clean cat urine from the carpet:

1. Baking soda works well to eliminate surface (but not deeply penetrated) odors. Dampen the area with clean water and then sprinkle baking soda over it. Rub the baking soda into the soiled area and let dry. Brush or vacuum to remove the dry material.

2. Another option in the how to clean cat urine list is white vinegar. Mix together 1 quart warm water and 1/2 cup white vinegar, and dribble the mixture onto stain. Place dry towels over the stained area and put something heavy over the towels to increase the pressure. After some hours remove the towels and raise the nap of the carpet with a soft-bristled hairbrush. Note: Test the vinegar solution on a piece of fabric that is hidden from view - under the cushion or on the backside of the furniture.

3. To clean old or heavy stains in carpeting, consider renting an extractor or wet-vac from a local hardware store. The extracting/wet-vac machines works like a vacuum cleaner and do the best job of forcing clean water through your carpet and then forcing the dirty water back out again. When you use these machines, you should follow the instructions carefully. Note: Don't use any chemicals with these machines - they work much more effectively with plain water.

4. One of the newest technologies for cleaning cat urine is penetrate the soiled area and deactivate the odor with peroxide or detergents. Simply spray a product that consist a 3% hydrogen peroxide and wait about five minutes. After that use a clean white absorbent cloth, blot the area, pressing down firmly (do not rub) for 30 seconds. Repeat this blotting process until the area is dry. If the stain or odor persists, repeat the process.Once the soiled area is really clean, you should use a high-quality pet odor neutralizer. Test the affected surface for staining first, and read and follow the instructions.

If the area still looks stained after it's completely dry from extracting and neutralizing, apply a specialized stain and odor removing bacteria/enzyme cleaner, such as "Outright Pet Stain Eliminator," "Pet 'Oops' Remover," or "Stain Gobbler". QUICK CAT FACTS

ARE GINGER CATS ALWAYS MALE?
No. This is a common misconception. Ginger cats can be either male or female although ginger females are less common.

The genetics of ginger is explained in more detail in Tortoiseshell and Tri-Colour Cats (ginger is caused by the same gene as tortoiseshell), but this is a short version for those wanting a quick answer.

The ginger gene changes black pigment into a reddish pigment. The ginger gene is carried on the X chromosome. A normal male cat has XY genetic makeup so he only needs to inherit one ginger gene for him to be a ginger cat. A normal female is XX genetic makeup so she must inherit two ginger genes to be a ginger cat. If she inherits only one ginger gene, she will be tortoiseshell with some ginger areas and some black/brown areas.

The ginger gene is called a sex-linked gene because it is carried on a sex chromosome.

Also, if you look closely, ginger cats have tabby markings though these may be faint or only visible on the face, tail and lower legs. They are also visible in the ginger areas of tortie cats. This is because the gene that turns off tabby to give solid colour cats does not work on the ginger colour.

ARE GINGER FEMALES RARE?
No. They are less common than ginger males, but they are not rare. It is possible to selectively breed ginger female cats by mating ginger males and ginger females together. They will have ginger offspring.

ARE GINGER FEMALES STERILE?

Cat Health

The Ten Most Common Cat Tumor Symptoms

It's difficult to watch your suffer from cancer, and even harder to choose a course of therapy, like cat chemotherapy or radiation, to try to improve the situation. However, for older cats, many veterinarians recommend against treatments like chemotherapy, as they can be less effective. Age Is an Important Factor for Chemotherapy

When he was a kitten, you never had to worry about recovery time. One minute your kitten had a cold, the next she was bouncing off the walls. Recovery time is increased with age, and it takes longer for your cat to heal.

As a result of the cancer, your cat may have suffered damage to his or her immune system. Before setting on a course of chemotherapy, understand that the procedure includes pumping chemicals into your cat's system, causing sickening side effects. Your cat may not be able to recover from the drugs themselves. Consider Other Options for Older Cats

PICA In Cats: EATING THE INEDIBLE

Pica means eating non-food items. The behaviour ranges from sucking, chewing and biting through to swallowing bites of items. Pica (from the Latin for "magpie"). It should not be confused with the suckling/nursing behaviour that some cats retain into adulthood. Commonly consumed target items include wool, string, elastic bands, electrical cords, tissues, tinsel and houseplants. Other objects have included cassette tape and the rubber "teat" section of a child's dummy (pacifier). Eating a little grass or herbs is normal cat behaviour; indoor cats may eat houseplants if there is no grass accessible.

Like many obsessive or abnormal behaviours, the cat persists in doing it because the it is comforting or rewarding. The reward might be a nice taste, a full stomach or simply getting attention from the owner. The challenge is to make the behaviour unrewarding and redirect the behaviour into something rewarding for the cat and acceptable to the owner. Sometimes it is a displacement activity where an abnormal activity is substituted for normal behaviour because the cat can't express the more normal behaviour i.e. the normal behaviour is being thwarted.

PICA, WOOL-SUCKING OR PREY-PLUCKING?
Wool-sucking (or fabric-sucking) is a misdirected form of nursing. It's similar to a child's thumb-sucking in providing comfort.. Though sometimes mistaken for wool-eating, the item (sweater, blanket etc) is only sucked, not chewed, bitten or swallowed. Other commonly suckled objects include the cat's own tail, other cats or pet dogs. Behavioural treatment may be needed to build up the cat's confidence so it no longer resorts to "comfort nursing".

In general, the younger a kitten is when it is weaned, the stronger the urge to nurse and the more persistent the comfort-nursing. Usually it decreases naturally as the kitten grows up, but it may persist or resurface in early-weaned or hand-reared cats, particularly at times of stress. More rarely it becomes a compulsive behaviour or progresses to pica.

Some owners provide an old sweater for the cat to suckle on while protecting other garments by storing them away from the cat or dabbing hot chilli sauce onto them.

Plucking the target resembles pica but is a misdirected prey-related activity. The cat holds down the (often woollen) blanket or garment with its paws and uses its teeth to pluck or tear at it. This is the same behaviour found when a cat plucks or tears fur, feather or flesh from larger prey items (e.g. pigeons). The clothing/blanket isn't swallowed anything the cats tears off is discarded. One of my cats, Sappho, exhibited this behaviour towards crochet blankets.

In the case of one Siamese cat, it took a sock to its eating area and plucked at it periodically during the meal (canned food). The owner attributed this to "teeth cleaning" but it was probably misdirected prey-plucking/tearing behaviour as it only occurred at mealtimes.

How to Avoid a Bad Cat Breeder

It is human nature to be greedy, and greed leads to dishonorable behavior such as being despicable and mean. Some professional breeders you see may not be professional at all, or even close. They only want to make some a lot of money by pulling a fast one on gullible or inexperienced pet buyers, and do not even know the most basic needs of animals.

Bad breeders are ignorant to the fact that they are incapable of being a proper breeder. They are not aware that they are not fully educated and informed about the proper lifestyle and etiquette of a professional breeder. Being in the pet business may bring lucrative profits, hence the temptation to take advantage of it to make a fortune. These unscrupulous breeders are easy to sniff out, and are also known as backyard breeders who usually run their operations through newspapers and Internet ads with the claims of selling good pedigree cats with unbelievably low price tags.

Most of these animals sold by the unprofessional breeders to uneducated people who just want a cheap pet as a companion will end up in a shelter or at other people’s homes. Viruses are common among cats or kittens that are sold at a low price, as being kept in poor surroundings exposes them to illnesses and viruses, especially if their owners are not very passionate and responsible about them. Don’t be too quick to condemn these pet owners, for some people just do not realize the effort of raising a healthy pet and need the issue brought to their attention. .

Here are some common signs that should help you recognize a bad cat breeder:

1. Good, passionate breeders are usually proud of their work. They would take pride of the pedigree they raised, and would want to show them off. If the breeder does not take part in showing the cats, it shows that he is not very concerned about the cats’ quality.

2. Ask the right questions. An experienced and professional cat breeder would know all the right answers to your questions, as well as providing thorough explanations instead of short, simple lines. Knowing the history of a pedigree cat’s bloodline is a basic must in breeders. Therefore, if a breeder is unable to provide you with proper history of a cat, other information he offered may not be hundred percent accurate.

History, Temperament of the Maine Coon.

History of the Maine Coon Cat
Maine Coons have been on this earth for many centuries, they were well documented at being in large numbers at American Cat Shows in the mid 1800’s alongside the other popular breed at the time the Persian cat.

There are several theories as to the origin of Maine Coons, the Darwin Theory of an animal’s origin being disregarded and obscured, from being an outcross between a Bobcat/Wildcat and a domestic, coming across as ship cats from Scandinavian countries as Forest type cats and mating with the domestic cats, to Marie Antoinette sending her royal cats on a ship to the safety of Maine, prior to her beheading. Nobody really knows and the cat’s aren’t saying.

Maine Coons are a natural breed of cat or at least the original ones were, and anyone who has ever met one and to everyone who has ever lived with one, the Maine Coon is a very special breed of cat. [1]

Appearance of The Maine Coon Cat
Maine Coons are the largest breed of domestic cat and have a rugged, working cat appearance. They have a lovely semi-longhaired coat of varying lengths and were well built to survive in the harsh North American winters. This coat is very water repellent, but quite soft to the touch. An amazing plumed tail of large proportions finishes off this wonderful coat. They come in a large variety of colours and in several tabby patterns as well as solid and particolours. Brown tabby is the original colouring of a Maine Coon but the rainbow of colours range through blues, reds and creams, silvers tortoiseshell and solid blacks through to solid white.

Feline Diabetes Is Not A Cat And Mouse Game!
Feline Diabetes is one of the most common feline endocrine diseases. Its direct link is to the high carbohydrate diet of dry food. Many canned foods contain too many carbohydrates, which your cat may eat with great speed and gusto; but your poor choices, will definitely damage the health of your pet. Cats by nature are obligate carnivores and their system, as created by the nature is not suitable for a carbohydrate diet. Just don't put anything and everything before your cat. Understand its requirements, from its biological point of view. Feline Diabetes is not a cat and mouse game

Meow Mix House - Cat Reality Television

My friends at Meow Mix have done it again, they have produced a reality TV show staring 10 homeless cats. All ten cats were chosen from animal shelters from around the country.
The cats are spending their time in a storefront window in New York City. The players are brought to life with the use of voice over and the public votes one of the cats out of the house each week. Sound like something you've watched before?
The best part is when the cats gets voted out of the Meow Mix House they go to an adopted new home and the winner will be the new Meow Mix spokes-cat.
Thanks to Meow Mix for providing great entertainment for us cat lovers.
