The Manx Cat Myth

A neighbor or someone you know has a tailless cat. You've never seen anything like this so you inquire, they tell you it's a Manx cat. They got it from a shelter or SPCA. The breed is very unique, it has no tail, hind legs longer than it's front, sort of hops when it runs, is very affectionate and has a high intelligence level. The breed interests you so you set out to find out more about it, perhaps get one of your own.

It's not long before you realize how unique the breed really is, there aren't many Manx cats or breeders to be found, easily. You decide to search the internet, there you find web sites, breeders and loads of information. You make contact with a registered Manx breeder who informs you the tailless cat you thought was a Manx cat might not be an actual Manx cat. This puzzles you, so you inquire further. You learn that not every tailless cat is a Manx. In fact, the genetic mutation which causes the actual Manx breed cat to be born without a tail can happen in "any cat" spontaneously. This happening in "any cat" does not then automatically make that cat or it's offspring born without tails Manx breed cats. Shelters, SPCA's, back yard breeders and even Veterinarian's are the largest source of spreading the myth about all tailless cats being Manx.

Manx cats are "best known" for being tailless cats however, there are fully tailed kittens born in just about every registered litter. The true Manx cat has traceable descendants from the Isle of Man, a small island located off the coast of England. Several hundred years ago a spontaneous mutated gene carried a dominant trait which occurred at some point on the island.

This mutation caused some kittens to be born without the vertebrae that form the tail of normal cats. With the passage of centuries and due to the isolation of the cats from outside breeding, the taillessness eventually became a common characteristic among the Isle of Man cats. So, just as people who may "look" to be a specific nationality, yet can't actually claim that nationality without having actual ancestry, it's the same with the Manx breed cat. Registered Manx breeders are finding this happening more and more and have sought out to educate the public. These tailless cats with unknown origin are referred to by registered breeders as Domestic Tailless cats.

Their origin and ancestry is not usually known, chances are they have no actual Isle of Man descendants. There are several cat breeds with shortened tails, one can't assume a cat is a Manx due to it's shortened tail or lack of tail. Domestic Tailless cats are not bred selectively like registered Manx cats. The genetic mutation which causes the Manx breed to be born tailless has limitations, there can be health complications in some cats who carry it and are not monitored how they are bred. Tailed Manx are very important in a breeding program, they give it stability and soundness. I've had many instances where people contact me about their Domestic Tailless cats with heart wrenching stories. The out comes is usually the same, it always ends in heart break. They thought they were doing something good or saving a few bucks by picking up a tailless cat that was unregistered. If you want a Manx cat bottom line is your best choice is to purchase one from a reputable, registered Manx breeder. Choose a breeder who is actively showing their cats, they will be most informed on the breeds standard and be looking to produce kittens that model it for shows.

Seek breeders who are willing to supply other breeders actively showing their Manx as references. (Who best to tell you if the person is a good breeder than their peers!) Registered breeders take great pride in their breeding programs and offspring, they don't sell their Manx to pet stores, allow their cats to be used in back yard breeding programs or end up in shelters. They have a sales contract with a written health guarantee, require the cat be returned if things don't work out and are there long after the money has been spent and the sale is complete.

These breeders place their cats spayed or neutered or have an altering clause in their contract and with hold the registration papers until proof has been supplied it has occurred. You can expect not to permitted to declaw these cats, this is very inhumane and painful. How would you like your fingers cut off at the first knuckle? Since there are many dangers most pet owners aren't aware of for cats outside you can expect your breeder to never allow their cats to be outside cats. Owning a Manx cat be one of the most enjoyable pleasures in life.

They've been known to live up to the ripe old age of 17. Once you've been owned by a Manx your life will never be the same without one in it.

A very important aspect of new kitten care is keeping your kitten safe from danger. There are a lot of potential hazards round the home for little kittens. This article lists the most common ones and suggests ways you can minimize risks to your kitten and keep her safe.

Washing machine and tumble dryer:
If you leave the door open and there are clothes inside, there's a good chance your kitten will climb in and go to sleep. Always check your kitten isn't inside these before you use them.

Fridge and freezer:
As soon as you've used these, shut the door.

Hob and oven:
Shut the oven door as soon as you've finished with it. Cover hot hob plates.

Raw meat:
Keep it out of reach - it can give your kitten food poisoning.

Garbage:
Put all garbage in a sealed bin that your kitten can't access.

Plants:
Many plants are poisonous to cats. If you're not sure whether a certain plant is safe for your kitten if she eats it, put it out of her reach.

Pot pourri:
The oils used to scent this can be poisonous.

Open fires and candles:
Use a guard on the fire. Never leave a kitten in a room alone with lit candles.

Electrical wires:
If your kitten is a wire chewer, you'll need to put wires out of her reach or buy plastic covers for them.

Curtain tie-backs and cords on window blinds:
Kittens can get caught in these. Either remove them completely or tie them up out of reach.

Filled bathtubs and sinks:
Make sure your kitten doesn't have access to the room when the tub or sink is full.

Open toilet:
Try to get into the habit of keeping the lid down when the toilet's not in use.

Medications:
Keep them in a cupboard that your kitten can't get into.

Small objects:
Kittens can swallow small things like paper clips, rubber bands, staples and needles.

String, wool, fishing line and thread:
Kittens can swallow large quantities of these. For this reason, balls of wool or string and pom-poms aren't good toys for cats.

Household chemicals:
Most cleaners etc. are highly poisonous to cats and need to be kept somewhere your kitten can't access.

Tobacco:
Tobacco, nicotine patches and nicotine gum are all poisonous to cats.

Reclining chairs, futons, folding beds, drawers:
If kittens get caught when this type of furniture is moved, they can get crushed. Make sure your kitten isn't asleep somewhere she could get trapped before you use any of these.

Safety is a major factor for new kitten care. It's fairly easy to keep your kitten safe as long as you anticipate potential dangers and take the necessary steps to prevent them. Putting brightly colored post it notes up around your home is a good way to do this. Stick the notes on or near potential dangers - for example the fridge, washing machine, oven, toilet and futon - and anywhere else that could be a hazard.

How Sensitive Is A Cat's Taste?

Since a cat's sense of hearing and smelling is more sensitive than ours is, it's reassuring to discover that in one respect leastways we have got superior sense organs. When it comes to the sense of taste, our tongues are somewhat more adept than theirs. However, just only slightly. Similar to us, cats are responsive to four primary tastes...sour, bitter, salt and sweet. We react to all four in a strong matter, but cats are lacking when it comes to sweet tastes. They don't have our 'sweet tooth'.

Until recently it was believed by many experts that cats were practically the only animal among mammals that wasn't capable of determining sweet tastes. One stated, with no expertise, 'The cat doesn't display any response to sweet tastes'. Another one stated, 'Sweet tastes can't be recognized by the cat'. This age-old belief now needs to be put away. Recent tests have proven clearly that cats can recognize sweet tastes. If milk is watered down to one quarter of its normal strength, and a hungry cat is then offered an option between the watery milk laced with sucrose versus the same milk with no sweetener, they will without fail, choose the sweet dishes.

If this is the case, how come it has been rejected in the past? The answer lies in the fact that in almost all tests cats disregard the sweetness factor when making a choice. It's such a small significance to them they all but ignore it. If, for instance, they're tested with whole or even half and half milk, they express no preference for the more sweetened examples. Their reaction to the milk itself is too strong. Only if the milk factor is considerably diluted does the sweetness factor start to show up. And so, while cats do savor the taste, they do so at a really modest dismantle.

Sour taste is a cat's foremost reaction; followed by bitter, then salt and the last one is sweet. As food touches the tongue it comes in contact with sensory papillae there. These papillae (nubs) are strong, rough and backward pointing and are located in the middle of the tongue. In this area, there's a specialization of the tongue's surface that doesn't have anything to do with taste. So, there aren't any taste buds in this central area. It's a zone related solely with scraping meat from bones or with cleaning fur. The taste buds are limited to the tip, the sides and the back of the tongue only.

How does catnip work?

"Catnip" is the common name for a perennial herb of the mint family. It is native to Europe and is an import to the United States and other countries. The catnip plant is now a widespread weed in North America.

­Given to the right cat, catnip can cause an amazing reaction! The cat will rub it, roll over it, kick at it, and generally go nuts for several minutes. Then the cat will lose interest and walk away. Two hours later, the cat may come back and have exactly the same response.

Because there really isn't any scent that causes this sort of reaction in humans, catnip is hard for us to understand. However, it is not an uncommon behavior in animals that rely heavily on their noses. For example, there are many scents that will trigger intense hunting behavior in dogs, and other scents will cause dogs to stop in their tracks and roll all over the scent.

Although no one knows exactly what happens in the cat's brain, it is known that the chemical nepetalactone in catnip is the thing that triggers the response. Apparently, it somehow kicks off a stereotypical pattern in cats that are sensitive to the chemical. The catnip reaction is inherited, and some cats are totally unaffected by it. Large cats like tigers can be sensitive to it as well.

The reaction to catnip only lasts a few minutes. Then the cat acclimates to it, and it can take an hour or two away from catnip for the cat to "reset." Then, the same reaction can occur again. Very young kittens and older cats seem less likely to have a reaction to catnip.

Cat lovers come in many different shapes and sizes. There will be times, unexpectedly, you find out someone you know is a cat lover. Maybe he or she didn’t seem like the kind of person to have cats. Or you had an image in your head of what a stereotypical cat lover looks like.

One thing all cat lovers have in common is that they are also animal lovers. They seem have a soft spot in their heart for furry friends, and shows deep compassion for other animals and other living things.

They also feel a connection with their pets, expressing the belief that they can sense what it is feeling.

Some owners form a kind of companionship with their pets, especially if they are single or unmarried. It’s common for individuals to get a kitten, raise it, become very attached to it’s companionship, almost as if it is their partner.

10 Causes of Feline Heart Murmur

Feline heart murmurs are unusual sounds the blood makes when leaving or moving through the heart. A cat heart murmur is rated from Grade 1 through Grade 6, with Grade 6 being the most severe.

There a number of causes resulting in feline heart murmurs. Some conditions may be resolved with surgery.
1. Sometimes a cat heart has some abnormality or defect with the heart wall itself or the valves within the heart due to genetics (hereditary). Often a kitten is born with a heart murmur that he will grow out of in several months. This condition is not unusual and does not impair the cat heart. Often surgery can repair deformities in the heart valves.
2. Severe anemia resulting from flea and/or tick infestations can affect the heart. Nutritional supplements can treat the heart murmur.
3. The narrowing of the outflow area of the pulmonary artery at the exit from the right ventricle of the heart is called pulmonic stenosis. Here the murmur is the result of the abnormal turbulence of outgoing blood meeting resistance.
4. The same condition as above except occurring in the aorta outflow area is called aortic stenosis.
5. Tetralogy of Fallot is a complex defect affecting emerging arteries of the heart and more than one segment of the heart. Pulmonic stenosis causes the heart murmur.

Routine Geriatric Examination For Cats

Throughout her life, your cat should have a routine examination at least once a year, but as she grows older, your veterinarian may recommend more frequent checkups. Early detection is the key in managing some of the problems that may come with age, and changes can occur quickly, so for most healthy seniors, six month intervals between exams are about right.

At each routine visit, your vet will:
- examine the teeth and gums for tartar, swelling, or inflammation
- examine the ears for infection, ear mites, or other problems
- examine the eyes for pupil response and retinal health
- examine the skin and coat for parasites and other problems
- check weight, temperature, respiration and heart rate
- draw blood samples for laboratory analysis
- examine a fecal sample to check for intestinal parasites


You can help your veterinarian diagnose and treat problems your older cat may experience by observing and writing down physical or behavioral changes that you notice over time.

The devil, as they say, is in the details, so write down the following information:
- when you first saw each physical or behavior change
- whether each condition or behavior is present all the time or only sometimes
- how often the condition or behavior occurs
- how long the condition or behavior lasts
- what was happening around your cat at the time

How To Care for Himalayan Cats

Caring for Himalayan cats is similar to the care for most feline breeds. However, there are a few unique factors to consider if you are planning to make a Himalayan cat part of your family.

1. Himalayan cats are actually a subcategory of the Persian breed. Persian cats were bred with Siamese cats to acquire their beautiful coloring. Himalayans have the characteristic flat faces and long fur of the Persian breed. Their bodies are well-muscled and lean, despite the puffy appearance.

2. Himalayans tend to have gentle and sweet temperaments and make good pets for many different kinds of families. They tend to have relaxed natures, but also to be playful and active. As a breed, they are affectionate and sweet, if a bit fickle.

3. As with all cat breeds, it is important to provide good basic care for your pet. Your Himalayan should always have fresh water available, be fed healthy food and have access to a clean litter box. Of course, your kitty also needs love, affection and entertainment.

4. A Himalayan's long fur does require some extra care. First, remember that your cat may be sensitive to overly warm weather since he has a very warm coat; make sure you do not leave him ina home without air-conditioning during hot summer months. Alternately, some people get their Persian cats shaved during warm weather, often leaving the ruff and tail untrimmed in a style known as a "lion cut."

5. In addition, a Himalayan cat's fur requires special attention when it comes to grooming. While short-haired cat owners can get away with only an occasional brushing, your Himalayan will need grooming daily. Use a soft brush to remove knots from the cat's fur and to remove excess fur.

My friends at Meow Mix have done it again, they have produced a reality TV show staring 10 homeless cats. All ten cats were chosen from animal shelters from around the country.
The cats are spending their time in a storefront window in New York City. The players are brought to life with the use of voice over and the public votes one of the cats out of the house each week. Sound like something you've watched before?
The best part is when the cats gets voted out of the Meow Mix House they go to an adopted new home and the winner will be the new Meow Mix spokes-cat.
