Healthier Cat Foods Have Higher Quality Ingredients
Although most commercial cat foods meet the criteria for "complete and balanced" as determined by AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials), these standards do not assure the safety or quality of the ingredients. All products in the recent cat food recall bore the AAFCO certification.
Better foods will cost more initially, but the lack of fillers and increased bioavailability of quality ingredients will save money over time. Your cat will get more nutrition out of less food and suffer fewer food allergies. Ultimately, the cost savings of inexpensive, poor-quality foods is a false economy.
While most people tend to look past these lost souls, assuming they either live with someone or don't deserve a moment's thought because they are pests, there are others who feel differently. Some people understand that stray cats aren't being stray on purpose just to irritate humans. They have been abandoned, perhaps, or were born to a stray that was abandoned.
The reasons for their existence vary, but it's probably safe to say their fate has been created by humans. Therefore, it should be up to us to remedy the situation and to tend to the needs of these cats.
For those who sympathize with these homeless ones, it can be heart wrenching to watch them suffer. Many sensitive, caring people want to help, but may not know how to do it.
The first consideration has to be your own safety. Often, even if a cat started out as a loved family companion, it can still transform into a fearful or aggressive animal who must go into "survival mode" to live in a hostile world. You may not be able to simply reach down and pick the cat up. Why would a cat that has been treated badly trust you? How would it understand that you mean it no harm when everyone else has been cruel or abusive? Such a cat might not be friendly and you must take precautions.
Changing to a feline kidney diet will help in a number of ways; it is going to make certain that your cat is receiving all the nutrition they require to strive. A feline kidney diet needs to include special vitamins and minerals than you do not generally get in a regular feline diet because there are kidney problems.
New Article - Feline Panleukopenia Disease
Feline Panleukopenia or Feline Distemper is a serious disease that occur in cats. It is also known as Feline Distemper. The illness is caused by a Parvovirus that is present everywhere in the environment and has been recorded in many countries. As such most cats are exposed to the pathogen to varying degrees. However, the disease only takes hold in cats with weakened immunity.
Most cat owners are unaware of Feline Panleukopenia since kittens are routinely immunized against it as part of the standard vaccination regimen. The disease thus appears in feral, abandoned and other stray felines that have not received adequate protection. Once the illness takes hold, it is deadly - killing up to nine out of every ten individuals. No cure exists apart from dietary support and loving care. If the cat is able to pull through the acute phase lasting the first week, it is likely to survive and develop complete future immunity against the illness.
New Article - The Importance of Sterilizing Cats!
Numerous articles have been written about the importance of spaying and neutering cats and the health benefits that are gained by doing so. Many people are aware that the sterilization process is a good thing and abide by the usual recommendations. However, every once in a while it is a good thing to write a reminder to those, who do not believe in spaying or neutering, about why they should.
Spring and summer is known across our country as the "kitten season." Many female cats will be giving birth and many kittens will be unwanted and end up in shelters or even put to death by their owners.
A female cat can come into heat as early as four months - especially in the springtime. Locking a cat in the house may seem like a great alternative, but it plays havoc with a cat's health.
The reproductive system that nature created in a female cat is amazingly efficient. Having kittens is a very natural part of a female cat's life and not having kittens, without the help of being spayed is very hard on a cat.
Male cats are always willing and able to mate, and if they do not have anyone to mate with, it does not present a problem. They will just sit around and wait until a female presents itself.
Female cats on the other hand have reproductive needs that have to be met, that is the way nature created the female cat. If you do not want kittens, it is important to have your female spayed by at least six months of age.
New Article - Homemade Kitten Food
Do you need a cheap, healthy alternative to store bought kitten food to help wean your kittens off their mother's milk and transition them to traditional canned kitten food? More than likely, they have shown little interest in regular canned food, preferring the milk to anything you might put in their bowl. Dry food will also be too hard on their developing teeth. The best option would be to start them on a food that reminds them of what they prefer, but can be mixed with traditional wet food to help transition them over. This recipe is simple to make, and kittens find it delicious.
Bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat and mix in one envelope of unflavored gelatin. Be sure to mix thoroughly, and do not boil the gelatin. If the water tastes bad or has a heavy chlorine taste when it comes out of the tap, consider using filtered water instead.
Pour this mixture into a blender along with half of a 12 ounce can of goat's milk. Blend just long enough to combine thoroughly. Do not substitute cow's milk because cats tend to be lactose intolerant. Using cow's milk can lead to discomfort, diarrhea, and worse if fed to kittens.
Add the following ingredients one at a time. After each addition, blend briefly to combine before moving on to the next. You will want to use the lowest setting to avoid overmixing. Add: 3 tbsp full fat yogurt, 3 tbsp real mayonnaise, 3 tsp light corn syrup, and 1 raw egg yolk. Concerning the egg yolk, raw eggs carry a small risk of salmonella poisoning. To eliminate any risk of accidentally passing this on to your kittens, use eggs that have been pasteurized in their shells.

Pilling a Cat: Pilling a cat can be a "nightmarish" experience. Cats don't want something pushed down their throats, and they'll fight with all their might to prevent it. In fact, it's amazing how powerful their small bodies can be. Here are some ways to make the pilling process easier and less stressful ? for both you and your cat
The Best Of Both Worlds: The Wild And The Tame - The Bengal Cat: A relatively new cat breed first bred in the U.S., the Bengal cat was created by crossing an Asian Leopard Cat with a domestic cat. Over time, this breed has become a visual and temperamental success preserving the strong physical resemblance to its beautifully wild ancestor while inheriting a pleasant, domestic disposition. Talk about best of both worlds. Large and sleek, this cat is as alert as it is affectionate. Its distinctive leopard spotted or marbled coat enhances its wild appearance as it roams the house. Unlike any other breed, some Bengals appear as if they were dipped in gold or silver glitter. Their voices are distinct and versatile, from a coo to a chirp. They love to jump, somersault and play with water just like wild and feral cats

Cats are intrigued by water
Cats: everybody knows how much they dislike getting their fur wet. Yet, many people that own a cat
can claim that they have often found their kitty with its paws inside their water bowl or playing with the water dripping from a faucet. As odd as it is, many cats love water, they are attracted to it and many spend hours just playing with it.
Things appear to change though when the cat's fur gets wet. For some reason, cats seem to hate getting their fur wet. Yes, they seem to do very well with licking their fur but water being poured on their precious fur? No way! Just a few drops on their fur will make their skin spasm and they will readily lick it off with their tongues.
Why is that? Why do cats dislike so much getting their fur wet? An explanation may be the fact that cats originated from desert regions where of course, water was a rare event.
There are however, variables between cats and water. Among the feline family, tigers appear to enjoy spending time in the water to cool off whereas panthers and lions try to avoid water as much as possible, unless getting a dip will take them on the other side where there is prey.

Cat café is coming to London after public donates £100,000 in a feline frenzy
Britain’s first cat café could be open within months after members of the public donated more than £100,000 to bring the Japanese idea to the UK.
The café – which will be staffed by between 10 and 15 felines – was overwhelmed with start-up donations after an article in The Independentabout entrepreneur Lauren Pears’ idea.
Today she revealed that she is now looking at prospective sites in the Old Street area of London with a view to opening in May – and has already found the café’s cat stars.
Cat cafés are already popular in Japan, where dozens of establishments cater for people whose small apartments preclude owning a pet. Guests pay a fee to stroke the animals while they drink coffee.
Ms Pears, 30, who describes herself as “chief crazy cat lady”, spotted a gap in the market in Britain. With landlords none too keen on tenants keeping animals in rented accommodation, and with increased financial pressures meaning not everyone can afford the food and veterinary care necessary to look after a pet, Ms Pears quickly found thousands of supporters for her fledgling business.
She has received more than 300 job applications and a further15 are sent in every day.
The money trickled in slowly, but after the article in The Independent at the beginning of this year, donations via her page on the crowd-funding website Indiegogo escalated. Promising visits to the café for £5, and offering VIP membership for £130, she accrued a fund of £25,000 by 11 February. Two weeks later, the total stands at £109,510. Of the 30 available £500 cat-sponsorship packages, 20 have been claimed.
The cats will be rescue animals from the Mayhew Animal Home in Kensal Green, north-west London, and Ms Pears claimed their welfare was at the forefront of her mind.
“We tried to figure out a solution where the cats don’t get too stressed out which is why we’ve introduced the cover charge,” she said.
“That way, people can stay as long as they like without feeling like they’re against the clock which works for the cats because it takes cats a little time to get used to people.”

Sneezing in Cats
Sneezing in cats is almost always associated with nasal discharge, and out side of coughing is perhaps the most dangerous sound you will ever hear from your cat. All cats will sneeze occasionally as well as have some nasal discharge, but if it becomes severe, chronic or reoccurring, it should signal you that there is an underlying problem. Unfortunately for some cats, especially if they are older, the underlying problem is usually something very sinister.
For this reason, sneezing should be treated with a sense of urgency and you should immediately check your cat for any type of a nasal discharge. Cats by nature are extremely meticulous and if you do not check very quickly, the early warning signs of a discharge may go unnoticed.
Sneezing in cats is a reflex of their upper airways and is meant to activate irritating material from their nasal cavities. In most all cases, this activation is explosive in nature and you will be able to see the discharge. If there is no discharge at all, it is usually a one and done type of occurrence and you have nothing to worry about. However, if a discharge is present, it is usually the sign of an irritation, the beginning stages of a nasal disease, or something serious.
Finding the nasal discharge at first may be very difficult as your cat will quickly lick away any secretions, but if it does intensify, it will build in volume. Once this occurs, the type of discharge will also begin to change and you will be able to see secretions start to accumulate on your cats nostrils or their surrounding hair. If it does become severe, you will also see what is referred to as nasopharynx, which is a retching or a reversed form of sneezing.

In 1986 in Northern California a disease that was causing illness and death in cats was found to be caused by a virus similar to HIV, or the AIDS virus found in humans. Since then, much research has been done on this virus and the disease it causes. To date scientists have not been successful in formulating a vaccine to prevent this infection in cats. There has also been little success in finding methods to treat those cats that have the disease, but we DO know enough about the disease to safeguard our pets from this fatal disorder.
Because of its similarity to the HIV virus, it was named FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus), and the disease it induces is known as FAIDS (feline acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The virus is classified in the same group of viruses as the HIV virus, but it is not identical. The HIV virus does not infect cats, and likewise the FIV virus does not infect humans. There is no danger that a person could catch AIDS from a cat or vice versa.
There is now a reliable blood test, which your veterinarian can perform on your cat to see if it is infected with FIV. As in people, we refer to a cat that tests positive as being "FIV positive" but that cat does not necessarily yet have FAIDS, and may not become sick for months or years or in some cases not at all. When a cat does develop illness, the body's natural defense against disease is broken down. The cat is then susceptible to a great variety of infections, cancers, etc. No one specific symptom is typical. It might be a sickly cat that is not recovering promptly from an illness, or has a chronic illness such as infected teeth or gums, frequent diarrhea or discharge from the nose or eyes. While we do our best to control other infections these cats may acquire, we cannot cure them of the FIV infection, and it is usually fatal.
The FIV virus affects only cats, so the risk for any cat of catching the virus comes through contact with another cat that is infected. The virus does not survive outside the cat's body, so it is not blown through the air or carried on a person's hands or clothing from cat to cat. An indoor cat that does not come in contact with other cats would be at no risk of catching the virus. Cats that are allowed to roam outdoors and may encounter stray cats have to be considered at risk to catch FIV. Studies have shown that the infection is worldwide, and in every area of the United States where stray cats have been tested the infection is present in a certain percentage of those cats. Because cats can live for months or even years while infected, they can transmit the infection to other cats.
Many studies are currently investigating exactly how FIV is transmitted cat to cat. The most common method of transmission is through a bite wound inflicted by an infected cat. In this case the virus in its saliva enters the blood stream of the bite victim. Bite wounds, however, are not the only method of transmission and virus-to-blood contact is not always necessary. FIV infected mothers can transmit the virus to their offspring but not in utero. The transmission to offspring probably takes place during nursing, and experts feel the majority of kittens nursing FIV positive mothers don't get the disease. It is still unknown whether transmission takes place during mating, but since biting can be part of the mating ritual, we have to assume it could. Experimentally scientists have been able to infect cats by giving the virus orally. We don't know, however, in the natural setting of mutual grooming, sharing food bowls, etc., how often this occurs. It appears that in a setting where one cat in a house is FIV positive and has non-biting contact with other cats, those cats have a low probability of becoming infected.

Cat Attacking Ankles
Ankle biting and sudden attacks are most often associated with your cat’s aggression but there may be a reasonable explanation. Cats have a strong natural desire to hunt and they are taught by their mother how to do it. Nowhere is where the problem starts. Inside the house, there isn't much to satisfy this desire to hunt Mice, fleas, bugs of all sorts, spiders and the like are all that the cat has to hunt, and other attractive prey are scarce indoors.
They have to make do with what they have so that may mean that they will
hide out and when you least expect it, they will attack ankles and other moving
body parts of their human counter parts. In some cases you can provide an
appropriate toy to help him with the problem of wanting to hunt something.
Remember that cats have this urge to hunt instilled in their being.
Toys that work in a lot of cases are furry balls on a string, wand, or attached to
a small fishing rod for efficient "casting" and interesting motion as it is reeled
in. There are other things you could try like a wind up mouse or a battery
operated toy that moves on its own. If your children have a radio controlled car
and your cat is not afraid of it that may work to satisfy the urge to hunt. Some
people just tie a toy on a string and drag it thru the house so that the cat will
attack the object and making it a better target then your ankles to bite at.

Can You Really Train A Cat? Is It Worth The Trouble?
Cats are notoriously independent and have a mind of their own. Can you really teach a cat new tricks? Cat owners often think that their cat is just too moody to listen. Some owners feel their cats are UN-trainable simply because they are arrogant. The fact is many times pets don’t obey because they don’t understand what you want from them. So, if you have tried to train your cat, you may not be doing it right.
Training your cat takes time and patience. It takes more of that then it does with a dog. A sure fire way to get results is to use positive reinforcement. Whatever you do, don’t scold your cat because she is likely to just misbehave when you aren’t looking. Instead, praise good behavior.Any cat can learn. It is wise to first start when the pet is young, about eight to ten weeks old. But, the pet will do well at any age.
How do you get started? The first thing to start with is training your cat to come when called. Hold your cat’s favorite treat and call his name. You’ll want to make sure he’s in a good mood. You’ll also want to make sure there isn’t a lot of noise either. Distractions will slow down the cat or confuse him. Decide on one command and use it solely. The command should be short and easy to say. For example, come kitty works well or here kitty will work too.
Now, get down on her level by sitting or kneeling on the floor. Give the command. Make sure your voice is exciting and happy. When the cat comes to you, reward him with the treat. Also, insure that you praise the cat as well. Then, move away and do the same thing again. The goal is to use the same tone of voice and the same command. Work on it for no more than ten minutes. If the cat is bored or frustrated, stop for the time. Try to do this two or three times a day for about a week.
Once he gets this command, you can move on to others. Some things that your cat needs to learn for his own well being are necessary to teach any and all cats. For example, he needs to learn to tolerate a harness and a leash in case you need to travel with him. Also, the cat should learn to use a crate.
Using a Leash and Harness: To do this, you’ll want to start by putting the harness on him. Do not restrain him once it is in place. Praise him for it. Give him a treat for behaving so well. Once he is used to wearing it, attach the leash to it and let him lead you throughout the area. Coax him into following you with treats and praise. Some cats will learn to heel on the leash. But, most will not. All should learn to not panic or to struggle, though when wearing a leash.

Exotic - the Facts Every Owner of This Cat Breed Should Know
In the 1960s a Persian was crossed with a Domestic Shorthair in an attempt to create a Persian with only short hair. The result was today's Exotic, a breed that looks strikingly similar to the Persian, but with less maintenance involved, hence the nickname, 'the lazy man's Persian.' There are long- and shorthaired varieties of Exotic. The coat of a Longhaired is very similar to a Persian. It is very thick and dense, and requires daily grooming, along with regular bathing. The Shorthaired Exotic coat is, well, short. However, that does not mean it does not require some maintenance from the owner.
Though Shorthaired Exotics tend to be able to keep themselves clean via regular grooming, the occasional brushing is recommended to lower the occurrence of fur balls. Both Long- and Shorthaired Exotics are seen in a wide array of colors and both will shed, though not nearly as much as a Persian. Both tend to be of an average size and weight and tend to live around twelve years, though they are not considered mature until approximately two years of age and enter puberty later than other breeds.
In this article, I will discuss the different types of Ragdoll Cats. Although Ragdoll Cats are a unique breed in themselves, they can be further divided into groups based on the colors and patterns of their fur. The combination of color and pattern can then be used when describing a Ragdoll.
Ragdoll Cats are one of the following four colour types:
* Seal - Mostly cream/beige/fawn with dark brown points, nose and paw-pads
* Chocolate - Mostly ivory with milk chocolate colored points, nose and paw-pads
* Blue - Mostly bluish-white with blue-gray points, nose and paw-pads
* Lilac - Mostly white with pink-gray points, nose and paw pads

Maine Cat - the Cinderella in North American’s farms.
Maine cats is known as the first naturally occurring species of long-haired cat in North America, it’s said that it has a long history.
Maine cats were wedge-shaped head, there are M- tiger type in the forehead, and high cheekbones. Ears are large, suggestible wide, ear-side cluster with long hair, slightly to the outer. Apricot big eyes, pick a little in the corner, a bit like a classical beauty of the Orient.
Maine cat known as the world's largest cat species, the "great tame cats". The body weight of adult male cats can reach to 89 kilograms, adult female cat can be a little lighter. Big size, muscular, strong bone, muscular limbs, long tail, is overall well-coordinated, full of wild-US.
Maine cat hair wearing a double-layer. The waterproof oily hair, is of anti-wind and rain, so that they do not hate water that much like other cats. The bottom of the pile is soft, hairy hard, and getting longer and longer along the back.
Maine cat hair color is very rich, mainly in three large kind: single-color, stripe, mixed. Maine cat has a very powerful, majestic appearance, and they also have the warm of heart, friendly, loyal inner beauty, particularly in male cats. Maine cats are actively, as they after all, had used to live in the farm, not suitable for raising in small apartment.

There’s Nothing Like A Cute Cat There comes a time in everyone’s home when it must be decided if it’s going to be a home with a pet or a home without. This is an easier decision for some than it is for others; there are some of us who grew up in a home that was never without a dog or cat; there are others of us who did not have a pet growing up and are eager to fulfill this childhood dream in adulthood. Ultimately, pet ownership is a choice only your family can make, as is the type of pet you choose - for dog lovers, a friendly pooch; for feline lovers, a cute cat.
Feline Immune Deficiency Virus Feline immune deficiency virus (FIV), a term that can place immediate fear in a cat owner, is not a mandatory death sentence for your cat.
What Are the Top 10 Most Popular Pedigreed Cat Breeds? Pedigreed cats are a source of joy and pride for their owners. Besides their gorgeous coats, beautiful lines, and great disposition, these animals offer companionship and entertainment to those who love them. Choosing a pedigreed cat is not easy, but knowing the most popular breeds of pedigreed cats may help.
Lets Look at the Cat Whisperer A cat whisper is somewhat similar to a dog or horse whisperer, although cat whisperers relate quite well with cats. These types of people are unusually lucky and very successfully with cats. In most cases, a cat will be abandoned or just show up at someone's door. In this event, the cat will adopt this individual as the cat whisperer.
How To Be A Responsible Cat Owner: Now that you have a cat or several cats in the house, you need to think about how you can be a responsible cat owner and provide for the needs of your cats
Training a Cat not to Chew on Dangerous Objects
Cats chew, lick, or eat non-food objects for medical and
behavioral reasons. Out of curiosity, a cat will try to chew on
most things. Easy to swallow items will need to be put up out of
reach of your cat.
What Is Feline Infectious Peritonitis? Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a virus which is a variant of the Corona virus. Unfortunately there is no proven effective vaccine to immunize cats from its deadly outbreak. This virus is so elusive that the only way to accurately diagnose the disease is after the cat's death. Sadly, there also is no cure for this disease.
Dental Disease in Dogs and Cats: periodontal disease (problems in the area around the teeth) is one of the most common health problems in companion animals. It is estimated that 80 per cent of dogs and 70 per cent of cats
older than 3 years of age suffer from some level of periodontal disease
