How to save money by testing for feline UTI yourself

Do you want to save money, anxiety for your kitty, and unnecessary trips to your vet? Would you like to know if your cat is developing crystals in her urine that could lead to a feline UTI?

It's easy to do with this check-at-home method.

If your kitty has been previously diagnosed with a feline UTI, there's a chance it could re-occur. Since it's impossible to see the crystals in your cat's urine that are caused by a UTI, you don't know kitty's hurting again until the UTI is fairly well advanced. And then how do you tell?

Poor kitty probably stops using the cat litter box - again.

Well, there's an easy method to check kitty's urine at home, with a minimum of fuss. You can check as often as you like, and it's easy to see the test results - you don't need any training.

Here's how:

First off, you'll need either non-absorbent litter (available from your vet) or clean acquarium gravel that's available at any local pet store.

Next, you'll need urine pH test strips, which you can read about, and order at: www.cat-urine-odor-advisor.com

Then, set up kitty in a room of her own with food, water, a clean litter box (scrubbed clean, not just litter-dumped-out clean) with the non-absorbent litter or acquarium gravel. You might also add some of her favorite toys, a kitty DVD. see them at www.cat-urine-odor-advisor.com

This testing is even easier when you know the approximate times of the day or night your cat uses the litter box. You may need to observe your cat for a few days to figure this out. Scout usually goes around 4:30 AM, or 5:00 PM. There's probably other times, but these are the two most convenient times for me to grab a fresh sample from her.

Give kitty time to give you a sample in the box. Check often, to make sure you get fresh cat urine. Why? Fresh cat urine will give you the most accurate pH reading. The older the urine, the higher the pH reading will be...you'll think kitty has a problem, when she may not.

Dip the urine pH test strip into kitty's urine, and GENTLY shake the excess off, over the cat litter box. Hold the wet end up, and compare it to the chart that comes with the urine pH test strip kit.

A normal reading is 6.4 - 6.6. If it's any lower or higher, please contact your vet as soon as possible for more information.

I test my cat Scout monthly. Since I've begun using this method, I no longer have to guess if the changes in her diet and lifestyle are working to prevent future UTI occurences. I know for certain, based on the urine sample test reading.

What could be easier? You:

- Can test kitty at home, at your leisure, and hers.

- Don't have to schedule a vet visit.

- Can easily read the test results quickly.

- Will know if an appointment with kitty's vet is necessary or not.

Remember, this testing will tell you that a recurring UTI is possible - it's NOT definitive. For confirmation, you will need to take your cat the vet.

My cat Spike had become uncommonly skittish when he was in his bed in the garage. He has two beds, one in the house and one in the garage. Even if I was outside with him he would nervously keep watch on his surroundings as if expecting something to jump from behind a tree and grab him. If he wanted to go into the garage from the house, he would nervously watch the garage door for any movement from the night. He even had me opening the door and looking outside to see if anything was going on. Spike seemed to be watching for any sign of the raccoons that had camped out in our garage during the summer. When we had chased off all the raccoons except one, we breathed easier, but then Spike almost lost his leg due to a scuffle with the largest raccoon. Spike had gotten between the raccoon and some leftover food in the cat's dish, leaving the cat with a badly mangled left rear foot.

About the same time, the neighbor's two large dogs that were kept in a pen in their back yard began to go nuts each night about two in the morning. They would howl, bark, and lunge at the fence! You could hear the dog's bodies hitting the chain link fence all the way too my house, two doors away! At this point we still didn't know what was causing the commotion each night.

A few weeks went by and now Spike was spending most of his night time in the house, while the dogs continued to bark each evening after dark. Only after we spotted the coyote crossing the road to trot in our direction did we know what was causing the disturbance. That's when we named the Coyote, Ruckus!

Female cats on the other hand have reproductive needs that have to be met, that is the way nature created the female cat. If you do not want kittens, it is important to have your female spayed by at least six months of age.

Bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat and mix in one envelope of unflavored gelatin. Be sure to mix thoroughly, and do not boil the gelatin. If the water tastes bad or has a heavy chlorine taste when it comes out of the tap, consider using filtered water instead.

Pour this mixture into a blender along with half of a 12 ounce can of goat's milk. Blend just long enough to combine thoroughly. Do not substitute cow's milk because cats tend to be lactose intolerant. Using cow's milk can lead to discomfort, diarrhea, and worse if fed to kittens.

Add the following ingredients one at a time. After each addition, blend briefly to combine before moving on to the next. You will want to use the lowest setting to avoid overmixing. Add: 3 tbsp full fat yogurt, 3 tbsp real mayonnaise, 3 tsp light corn syrup, and 1 raw egg yolk. Concerning the egg yolk, raw eggs carry a small risk of salmonella poisoning. To eliminate any risk of accidentally passing this on to your kittens, use eggs that have been pasteurized in their shells.

Cat café is coming to London after public donates £100,000 in a feline frenzy

Britain’s first cat café could be open within months after members of the public donated more than £100,000 to bring the Japanese idea to the UK.

The café – which will be staffed by between 10 and 15 felines – was overwhelmed with start-up donations after an article in The Independentabout entrepreneur Lauren Pears’ idea.

Today she revealed that she is now looking at prospective sites in the Old Street area of London with a view to opening in May – and has already found the café’s cat stars.

Cat cafés are already popular in Japan, where dozens of establishments cater for people whose small apartments preclude owning a pet. Guests pay a fee to stroke the animals while they drink coffee.

Ms Pears, 30, who describes herself as “chief crazy cat lady”, spotted a gap in the market in Britain. With landlords none too keen on tenants keeping animals in rented accommodation, and with increased financial pressures meaning not everyone can afford the food and veterinary care necessary to look after a pet, Ms Pears quickly found thousands of supporters for her fledgling business.

She has received more than 300 job applications and a further15 are sent in every day.

The money trickled in slowly, but after the article in The Independent at the beginning of this year, donations via her page on the crowd-funding website Indiegogo escalated. Promising visits to the café for £5, and offering VIP membership for £130, she accrued a fund of £25,000 by 11 February. Two weeks later, the total stands at £109,510. Of the 30 available £500 cat-sponsorship packages, 20 have been claimed.

The cats will be rescue animals from the Mayhew Animal Home in Kensal Green, north-west London, and Ms Pears claimed their welfare was at the forefront of her mind.

“We tried to figure out a solution where the cats don’t get too stressed out which is why we’ve introduced the cover charge,” she said.

“That way, people can stay as long as they like without feeling like they’re against the clock which works for the cats because it takes cats a little time to get used to people.”

But not all cat lovers are convinced. The animal welfare campaigner Celia Hammond said that she “wasn’t comfortable” with the idea of using cats in this type of venture.

Cats have become part of the family for most of us; therefore, when a cat starts to show problems such as cat urinating issues, we often get upset. When our cat starts to pee outside the litter box and urinates in inappropriate areas of the house frequently, we may either get worried or get pissed with their change of behavior. We may want to throw the cat out of the house or bring it to the veterinarian to get an explanation why it is acting so weird lately. But what if your cat is not urinating at all? Should it be a cause of alarm?

Litter box problems can be easily noticed especially if the cat has been well trained with it. However, cat not urinating may not catch the attention of the owner immediately as a cat owner may not particularly be interested in the cat's urinating habits. It is vital that the owner be aware of his cat's urinating habits to avoid serious problems from happening.

Cat not urinating is a sign of a serious condition in cats, especially in males. If left in this condition, the cat may not be able to live longer. This is one reason why cat owners should take notice of the cats' urinating pattern. Cat not urinating may mean that a cat is suffering from urethral obstruction, which is a life-threatening condition. It is imperative that a cat with this problem be taken immediately to the vet for medication.

Urethral obstruction is a form of feline lower urinary tract disorder (FLUTD) in cats. This condition happens when bladder stones or crystals, mucus, and fibrin form a plug and block the urethra of the cat, disabling the cat from excreting urine out of its body. When this happens, the pressure in the cat's bladder will increase and may result to rupture. This is highly dangerous for the cat.

Ankle biting and sudden attacks are most often associated with your cat’s aggression but there may be a reasonable explanation. Cats have a strong natural desire to hunt and they are taught by their mother how to do it. Nowhere is where the problem starts. Inside the house, there isn't much to satisfy this desire to hunt Mice, fleas, bugs of all sorts, spiders and the like are all that the cat has to hunt, and other attractive prey are scarce indoors.

They have to make do with what they have so that may mean that they will hide out and when you least expect it, they will attack ankles and other moving body parts of their human counter parts. In some cases you can provide an appropriate toy to help him with the problem of wanting to hunt something. Remember that cats have this urge to hunt instilled in their being.

Toys that work in a lot of cases are furry balls on a string, wand, or attached to a small fishing rod for efficient "casting" and interesting motion as it is reeled in. There are other things you could try like a wind up mouse or a battery operated toy that moves on its own. If your children have a radio controlled car and your cat is not afraid of it that may work to satisfy the urge to hunt. Some people just tie a toy on a string and drag it thru the house so that the cat will attack the object and making it a better target then your ankles to bite at.

Can You Really Train A Cat? Is It Worth The Trouble?

Cats are notoriously independent and have a mind of their own. Can you really teach a cat new tricks? Cat owners often think that their cat is just too moody to listen. Some owners feel their cats are UN-trainable simply because they are arrogant. The fact is many times pets don’t obey because they don’t understand what you want from them. So, if you have tried to train your cat, you may not be doing it right.

Training your cat takes time and patience. It takes more of that then it does with a dog. A sure fire way to get results is to use positive reinforcement. Whatever you do, don’t scold your cat because she is likely to just misbehave when you aren’t looking. Instead, praise good behavior.Any cat can learn. It is wise to first start when the pet is young, about eight to ten weeks old. But, the pet will do well at any age.

How do you get started? The first thing to start with is training your cat to come when called. Hold your cat’s favorite treat and call his name. You’ll want to make sure he’s in a good mood. You’ll also want to make sure there isn’t a lot of noise either. Distractions will slow down the cat or confuse him. Decide on one command and use it solely. The command should be short and easy to say. For example, come kitty works well or here kitty will work too.

Now, get down on her level by sitting or kneeling on the floor. Give the command. Make sure your voice is exciting and happy. When the cat comes to you, reward him with the treat. Also, insure that you praise the cat as well. Then, move away and do the same thing again. The goal is to use the same tone of voice and the same command. Work on it for no more than ten minutes. If the cat is bored or frustrated, stop for the time. Try to do this two or three times a day for about a week.

Once he gets this command, you can move on to others.Some things that your cat needs to learn for his own well being are necessary to teach any and all cats. For example, he needs to learn to tolerate a harness and a leash in case you need to travel with him. Also, the cat should learn to use a crate.

Using a Leash and Harness: To do this, you’ll want to start by putting the harness on him. Do not restrain him once it is in place. Praise him for it. Give him a treat for behaving so well. Once he is used to wearing it, attach the leash to it and let him lead you throughout the area. Coax him into following you with treats and praise. Some cats will learn to heel on the leash. But, most will not. All should learn to not panic or to struggle, though when wearing a leash.
