The cat was discovered by a local shepherd who noticed the strange folded ears. He contacted the cat's owners, Mr and Mrs Mc Rae who told him that all the other kittens in the litter were normal. The Mc Rae's promised the shepherd a kitten from any future litter that she might produce. Two years passed and Susie, the flat eared cat, gave birth to two more kittens with folded ears, one of each sex. The male was given to a neighbour who had it neutered and kept it as a pet, the female was given to the shepherd and his wife - William and Mary Ross.Three months later sadly, Susie was killed by a car on the road near where she lived. The Ross's went on to develop the breed from their kitten, Snooks, with the help of Pat Turner, a London breeder who took a male cat named Snowdrift back to London with him for an experimental breeding programme. Snowdrift became the founding father of the breed, with 76 descendants in three years, 42 of which had folded ears. In England the feline authorities opposed the breed, and in 1970 three of Snowdrift's descendants went to the USA. for a special study by geneticist Neil Todd in Newtown, Massachusetts. Later a breeder from Pennsylvania called Sally Wolfe Peters developed the breed. As a result of this the first Scottish Fold Cat was registered in the US in 1973, and she formed 'The International Scottish Fold Association' in 1974. By 1978 the breed had gained championship status at American cat shows, and had had become one of the most popular pedigree breeds in the USA by the 1990's. In England The Cat Association, eventually recognized the breed in 1983, and the Scottish Fold Cat is now seen regularly at their shows. Abnormalities: The gene that causes the ears to be folded appears to be linked to several physical abnormalities. It is a single dominant gene that causes problems when present in double strength (in the homozygous condition). If two Scottish Folds are mated, there is a greater chance that the kittens will be born with folded ears, but are liable to suffer from serious defects. As a result of this genetic link the breeders often mate their cats with non-folded felines, the result of this is the offspring will only have the ear-folding gene in single strength (the heterozygous condition). There are also some cats that get chylothorax for unknown reasons. "Build-up of fluid around the lungs makes it difficult for the cat to breathe. And unfortunately, she can't speak to you in specific terms to tell you. So it will be up to you to recognize behavioral changes or irregularities in routine so you can diagnose symptoms of kitty illnessI suggest you take great care in following and understanding your kitty's normal routines. This includes level of activity, food habits and potty habits. Remember that cat's often exhibit very subtle changes in their behavior when they don't feel well. It's important to pay close attention to any changes in your cat's behavior and even take notes on the changes in behavior or habits. Gathering more information about your cat's symptoms can also help the veterinarian know where to start when working on a diagnosis for the feline illness. Sometimes the diagnosis for cat health problems is determined quickly, but other times it can be complicated and any additional information from you can be helpful. The more quickly you realize there may be something wrong the better. Starting treatment quickly can cut down on additional problems and provide a better success rate. Plus your kitty will start feeling better sooner. Another good reason to act fast is because certain feline illnesses can contribute to cat behavior problems like urinating or defecating outside of the litter box. This behavior can become an unpleasant cycle of problems so avoiding this behavior when at all possible is of course best for both you and your feline friend. How do you know if your cat has a cat health problem? Sometimes it's more obvious than others, but as discussed earlier changes in your cat's normal behavior can be a good clue that something is wrong. There are also some specific symptoms to watch for: - Constipation (including lack of feces in the litter box) - Diarrhea - Urinating or defecating outside of the litter box - Straining in the litter box - Changes in appetite - Increased thirst - Changes in energy level - Change in weight - Vomiting (other than hairballs) - Excessive scratching - Depression or lethargy These are just a few possible symptoms, but anything out of the ordinary should be monitored and discussed with your veterinarian. Never try to self-diagnose a feline illness -- diagnosing needs to be done by your veterinarian. Many cat health problems may be subtle and yet difficult and could require multiple lab tests conducted by professional lab technicians. Prevention is the best medicine. Of course it's not possible to completely prevent feline illness but you can at least help reduce the chances of your cat contracting a feline illness. Too many casual pet owners do not seriously consider the nutrition of their precious little friend. They assume they can just buy what's on the shelf of their local grocery store and call it a day. In the long run feeding your cat a good quality cat food can actually save you money and headache. Another way to cut the risk of feline illness is by keeping your cat inside. Indoor cats are less likely to contract a feline illness because they aren't as exposed to carriers of feline diseases or parasites. And of course... never skimp on your routine visits to the vet. In the real world, giving a cat milk can do more harm than good.While milk might seem like a natural choice for your cat, the truth is that cow's milk offers no nutritional value for cats, and it can cause digestive problems in many. The reason is that most cats develop intolerance to lactose shortly after they are weaned. This means that they are unable to digest the sugars that occur naturally in milk. This causes problems that include diarrhea and other unpleasant digestive problems. Some people think that cats need to have milk in order to get all the necessary nutrients. This is not true. In fact, cow's milk does nothing to meet a cat's nutritional needs. If a cat was fed only milk, it would not be able to survive. Feral cats provide proof that cats do not need milk to be healthy, as wild cats do not usually have the opportunity to drink cow's milk. As long as your cat is eating a high quality food, and has access to clean fresh water, she is getting all that she needs. Milk alone is not a sufficient diet for any cat, and should never be given in place of food OR in place of water. Replacing a cat's food or water with milk can cause your cat to become malnourished. Many cats do seem to enjoy milk, and this causes a dilemma for many cat owners who love to give their cat treats that they enjoy. While most cats are lactose intolerant, some are not. For these cats, milk as an occasional treat is fine. The only way to know how your cat will react to milk is to feed her some. If she does not develop diarrhea then it is safe to assume that she is not lactose intolerant, and you can continue to give her the treat she loves. Again, milk should never be given in place of food, but as a treat. If your cat IS lactose intolerant, but still seems to crave a bowl of milk now and then, there is a way to satisfy her without upsetting her digestive system. Milk substitute that is specially formulated for cats is sold in most pet food stores. Like regular milk, it should only be given as a treat and not as a replacement for meals. Even if you feed this "cats milk" on a regular basis, a high quality cat food and fresh water should always be available. Another option for lactose intolerant cats is to give lactose-free milk. This milk is available in the same aisle as regular milk in most grocery stores. In addition to cat's milk, there are a lot of other ways to treat your cats to special food. If your cat normally eats dry food, give her some wet food once or twice a week as a special treat. Many makers of dry cat food also make wet food, so you can stick with your favorite brand if that is important to you. Another way to treat your cats is to find ways to make their dry food special. Pet stores sell special gravy that can be poured over dry food. Several flavors are available, so you can offer your cat a variety to keep her from becoming bored with her food. Another version of this is to pour the water from a can of tuna over the dry food. You can also feed your cat some tuna, in place of wet food, as an occasional treat. Take a trip down the treat aisle at the pet store, and you will see row after row of treats. While most of them are fine for your cat, keep in mind that treats should be given as such, and should not be fed to your cat in excess as this can cause an unhealthy weight gain. Kittens, unlike full grown cats, DO need milk, but the milk they need is their mother's. The mother's milk is full of all the fat, protein and antibodies that a kitten needs to grow and survive. Until a kitten is weaned, approximately four weeks after birth, a kitten should have only milk. NEVER give a kitten cow's milk. Obviously, the ideal milk is that from the kitten's mother. If this is not possible due the kitten being abandoned or orphaned, you will need to feed a substitute that should be available at your local pet store. The kitten will need to be fed this milk substitute several times a day. While the pet store personnel can probably answer most of your questions about caring for abandoned kitten, you should consult a veterinarian to be sure that the kitten is getting exactly what it needs. The bottom line is that milk is not necessary for a cat, but as long as she seems able to tolerate it, an occasional bowl isn't going to hurt. Dealing with Pet Loss - By a 17 Year OldLosing a pet is like losing a family member; it is very hard to deal with especially if they have been a part of your life for a long time. There are no real set ways to deal with this loss. Losing your pet it is heart wrenching, sad, depressing and deeply hurtful. It takes a long time to mourn. Everyone needs to find their own way to cope with these feelings.As a child losing a pet is the hardest thing that they can go through other than losing a close family member or friend. Most have been growing up with their pet and have close bonds. They are true companions, and best friends. They have shared a lot of fun together and made great memories. I am a 17-year-old boy and I recently lost my dog Tucker who was 20 years old. He had been around my whole life and the thought that he might someday die never really crossed my mind. We shared so many great times together, swimming in the pool, going for rides, playing with his toys and cuddling. He was also my sounding board, he listened but never judged me. He had been sick for a few months because of the complications of old age. But still doing well enough. He was a fighter and wasn't ready to leave us. However, one day he became very sick and he couldn't eat. That went into two days; he looked so sad and sick. We had to put him down it was one of the hardest things I could bare. I stayed in the room with him and so did my brother and father. Our mother was very close to Tucker and she could not stand to be there. All our hearts were breaking. The way I dealt with the pain was I took a long drive and reflected on the good times that I had with him. After the drive I came home and went up to my room and stared at the ceiling, I just wanted t to be alone and think. A lot of things changed after his passing, it just wasn't the same, and it never will be. With the support of my friends and family they helped me to realize that he is in a better place and I will see him when it is my time. Just the other day I thought I saw him lying on my mother's bed and I went in to pat him. This is going to be a long hard journey, but each day it gets a little easier. And I will always have our memories. My suggestion for people to help deal with the loss of their pet would be to listen to calming music and reflect on the good times that they had with their pet and think of special moments you shared together. Another way could be to get a new pet. Some people feel that they need to fill the void left and it gives them something else to start loving and take their mind off of their beloved pet. For me that was not an option. Another good way is to find a close friend or a relative that you have known for a while and just talk to them because they will be there to comfort you. And they can share in your stories and memories. Creating a memorial is another way to help remember your pet. This way the cat is eased into the change. • Start by mixing 25% of the new food with 75% of old food • Change the amount of food you give over the next three days by gradually increasing the new food and decreasing the old food • In the end of this weaning process, you should be feeding the new food 100% • During the first two days of the weaning period, do not give the cat treats or table scraps Negative affects might include: • Your cat picks out the new food and just eats the old food • The cat refuses to eat Don't be upset if this occurs; just continue with the weaning process until you are feeding the new food 100%. Cats can miss meals for a couple days with no adverse effects. Also be aware of how you bring in the new food and present it to the cat. Introduce the new food using a pleasant voice and don't demand your cat eat the new food right away. Just stay calm and positive about the entire process. Cats can read your body language even if you cannot understand what they say to you. I have been reading a lot about raw diets and I have decided not to try them for my cats. I am going to stick with the commercially prepared dry cat foods. I fear bacteria from raw diets will cause sickness in my cats. One of the biggest challenges in switching diets is when there is a switch from moist food to dry food. My cats do just love the Fancy Feast moist foods, however, I fed them this all the time, they would not have firm stools and the feces sticks to their coat around the anal area, which is something they hate to have cleaned away, so I avoid giving them too much of the moist food and stick with the dry food. If you have a cat on moist food and you want to change him or her to the dry food, try mixing the dry food with a little warm water if the cat resists changing over. You can even put the moistened food in the microwave for a few seconds. If you mix the food with water is sure to throw out the uneaten portion after 20 minutes. This prevents food spoilage. Apply this same rule to canned food. When you have your cat accustomed to the moistened food, wean him or her onto the dry food. If you notice your cat is not eating the cat food as usual, take a look at whatever else you are feeding before you decide the cat is a finicky eater. Do you give just a few table scraps or treats throughout the day? This can really make a difference in how much cat food is eaten. Extras can drastically change the cat's normal intake of cat food. Consider how you feel after eating too much candy or potato chips. Are you really interested in a three course meal? Neither is the cat interested in the nutritious food if you fill him or her up with treats and this and that throughout the day. It is not true that cats need variety in their diets. They normally eat to meet their energy requirements. Their ancestors ate meat in the wild. Domesticated cats thrive on routine and really do not tire of one particular flavor of food. However, there are different formulas to address different needs such as obesity and hairball remedies. Always keep plenty of fresh water out for your cat and provide a comfortable place to eat away from a lot of family confusion. For mental stimulation you might try hiding a few dry kernels of cat food under a small cup and place the cups in different areas to stimulate the hunting instinct. Below are six of the most common behavioral problems in cats and some solutions for them.1. Scratching Your Furnishings and Carpet. Cats actually need to sharpen their claws, just like rodents need to gnaw. Their claws never stop growing, and what they're actually doing when they sharpen their claws is removing the outer layer of the claw. Some people will simply declaw a cat that is having this problem. I do not advocate this. Even the most indoor of cats may wind up outside by accident or design one day, and if you remove your cat's claws, you're taking away his or her primary form of defense. Before declawing, try getting a scratching post. If your cat loves someone more than anyone else in the family, hang a dirty sock belonging to that person on the scratching post to make it smell familiar (you can take it off after about a day). You can also sprinkle catnip over it or – this is weird but it works – powdered chicken bouillon. The idea is to get the cat to feel friendly enough to the scratching post to attack it. Meanwhile, make your cat's favorite scratching areas less attractive. Sprinkle fresh lemon juice over them, wrap them or cover them with aluminum foil (fingernails on the chalkboard, anyone?), and clean them well to eradicate any cat odor. If you can, close doors to make those places inaccessible to the cat. 2. Eliminating Outside The Litter Box. The first thing to ask is, is it your fault or the cat's fault? Many cats won't use a litter box that is too dirty. They just don't like it. If you think this may be the problem, change out the litter about twice as often as you currently do. You can also be prompt about cleaning any places the cat goes, spraying these areas down well with Lysol or a similar disinfectant with a nice strong smell. You can also try putting the litter box in a more attractive place to the cat; the bathroom, for instance. If it's not in too obnoxious a place, you can put the litter box on top of the place your cat has chosen to go, too, just to make the point. As last resorts, put down bleach, safely, in those spots, and cover the area with aluminum foil. 3. Scratching people. Cats generally do this because they're afraid; again, is it the fault of the cat or of the people around him? If you have a cat that is generically afraid of children, though, you should do something about it; try acclimatization, or exposing the cat to young children until he's calmer about it. Don't let the child loose around the cat. Either have the child sit down in your lap or next to you, feeding Kitty treats. Not all cats are afraid; some are just plain mean to certain people. The only thing you can do about this is remove the cat from the situation; when the cat starts clawing or growling, pick her up and take her to the bathroom until your guest is gone; and it's usually a guest that this happens to, often one who owns pets of his or her own.. If it's a family member, try cat repellant or lemon juice to keep the cat away, then acclimatization to get them used to the other person. If all this fails, you may be forced to have the cat declawed. 4. Caterwauling (whining). Siamese cats do this by nature, and you may not be able to get them to stop. But other cats do it because they are hungry, tired, or sick, or to let you know she has done something good. There aren't many things you can do about this, unfortunately. If you think it's a hunger thing, feed her more promptly, and refuse to feed her when she caterwauls; she won't understand what you're doing, but she'll almost certainly quit after she figures out it does her no good. If she caterwauls because she is in heat, you should get her fixed. For other caterwauling problems, try to ignore her, and keep her as far away from yourself as possible. 5. Spraying. Male cats do this to mark territory, and they usually do it when they feel threatened: when dogs or small children threaten, or when other male cats are around. There is little you can do about this beyond having your cat neutered. Don't punish for it; the cat will not understand at all. 6. Running Outside. Cats get very curious about the outside. The first thing you should do is not open the door when the cat can run out. But you can also try to get the cat accustomed to the outdoors by getting a cat leash and walking her on it, or by carrying her in your arms when you go outside. Once she knows what's out there, she's less likely to want to get to it, particularly if you expose her to snow and wet conditions.
