And if he is prone to hairballs this can really be quite messy and uncomfortable for the cat. While excessive shedding can be a sign of illness, most shedding is natural for the cat and is just part of living with these lovely creatures.Cats, like any other animal, grow more fur in winter for protections. Your outdoor cat will shed this extra fur in spring but your indoor cat may shed all year long. This shedding is natural and necessary as excess dead hair needs to be removed or it can cause skin irritation. So how do you reduce the amount of hair from your shedding cat? The best way, of course, is frequent brushing. Yourcat may even enjoy this! My own cat loves to be brushed and purrs away rubbing up against the brush to be sure I get his favorite areas. It can be a great time to bond with your cat. On the other hand, your cat may hate it and you will have your work cut out for you to get him used to the daily brushing. In this case you will want to introduce him to the brush slowly - maybe a couple of strokes the first day working up gradually to a full brushing . Maybe offering him a tempting treat along with the brushing will help. To successfully brush your shedding cats, make sure to use a brush and comb that are designed for cats. You can use a metal comb or wire brush or a cat shedding blade that is designed to remove the dead hair. When brushing the cat, use fluid strokes that go in the direction of the hair growth. More than likely, they have shown little interest in regular canned food, preferring the milk to anything you might put in their bowl. Dry food will also be too hard on their developing teeth. The best option would be to start them on a food that reminds them of what they prefer, but can be mixed with traditional wet food to help transition them over. This recipe is simple to make, and kittens find it delicious.Bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat and mix in one envelope of unflavored gelatin. Be sure to mix thoroughly, and do not boil the gelatin. If the water tastes bad or has a heavy chlorine taste when it comes out of the tap, consider using filtered water instead. Pour this mixture into a blender along with half of a 12 ounce can of goat's milk. Blend just long enough to combine thoroughly. Do not substitute cow's milk because cats tend to be lactose intolerant. Using cow's milk can lead to discomfort, diarrhea, and worse if fed to kittens. Add the following ingredients one at a time. After each addition, blend briefly to combine before moving on to the next. You will want to use the lowest setting to avoid overmixing. Add: 3 tbsp full fat yogurt, 3 tbsp real mayonnaise, 3 tsp light corn syrup, and 1 raw egg yolk. Concerning the egg yolk, raw eggs carry a small risk of salmonella poisoning. To eliminate any risk of accidentally passing this on to your kittens, use eggs that have been pasteurized in their shells. You can serve the completed homemade kitten food the way it is, or you can store it for use later. To store for later usage, cover the mixture tightly in a small container. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to ten days or in your freezer for up to three months. If you are going to use food that you have prepared in advance, you will want to warm it up before serving, especially if it is coming from the refrigerator or freezer. Cold food causes severe stomach upset in kittens. Warming it up will also make it more aromatic, and thus more appetizing to the kittens. When our cat starts to pee outside the litter box and urinates in inappropriate areas of the house frequently, we may either get worried or get pissed with their change of behavior. We may want to throw the cat out of the house or bring it to the veterinarian to get an explanation why it is acting so weird lately. But what if your cat is not urinating at all? Should it be a cause of alarm? Cat Allergy - What Can I Do, I Love Cats: According to a recent report, between six and ten million people (that’s approximately two percent of the population!) in the United States are allergic to cats or exhibit symptoms of cat allergy. Got Cat Urine Smell Blues? It's a couple of hours before my big party and I'm almost ready to go out. I took the cats to the neighborhood vet for a weekend stay. I cleaned the house from top to bottom and everything looks great. As I leave to go and pick up some last minute items for the party, I went back into the house only to be greeted with the awful smell of cat urine when I entered the door. A Potential New Pet Food Scare:The issue this time is jerky treats made in China. Specifically, veterinarians are reporting an increase in cases of dogs being sick after eating certain jerky treats. The symptoms of the sickness include vomiting, diarrhea and severe lack of energy. Fortunately, no pet deaths have been reported as of yet although veterinarians are only becoming aware of the problem on a large scale now. If you've felt the nipping of tiny teeth on your fingertips, you know that biting cats aren't fun to have. Good thing is that it's an easy behavior to stop.Kittens instinctively nip and bite each other as they grow up. If you have a kitten and it's biting you, it's even easier to stop than in a fully grown cat. As kittens, cats learn which behaviors are acceptable and which aren't by, simply, getting their fuzzy butts kicked by their litter mates. If they bite one of their siblings too hard and end up getting bitten back, they learn, "Hey, maybe that wasn't such a good idea after all!" Continue Reading Multi-Vitamin for CatsMany pet owners wish to provide their animals with the best health possible by giving them a multi-vitamin for cats. Cats require a certain careful balance of vitamins and minerals as well as other nutrients in order to function at their best. By ingesting the proper combination of these vitamins, your cat will remain healthy and strong and is more likely to enjoy a long, happy, and illness free life. The exact vitamins which your cat will need are slightly different from the vitamins which you may see in a human multi-vitamin supplement, however, so it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the basics of feline nutrition before you purchase anything. Benefits of Multi-Vitamins for Cats Ideally, a good cat food will provide your pet with all of the different vitamins and nutrients that he needs. However, there are a number of reasons why he may still require a vitamin supplement as well. First, many cat foods do not provide the highest quality nutrients as a result of lower quality ingredients in the food. Second, sitting on the shelf for weeks or even longer can mean that the vitamins and nutrients which are naturally in cat food are reduced in quantity, thereby not giving your cat the nutrition he requires. For this reason, multi-vitamins are a good supplement to help your cat overall. Components of a Cat Good Multi-Vitamin Cats require certain enzymes and amino acids that can only be found in meat sources. For this reason, cats that do not eat meat will not be healthy and, ultimately, will not survive. Thus, many of the multi-vitamin supplements that are available for cats focus on some of these types of nutrients which are usually found in meat sources. These include: Continue Reading Something cool for BloggersFree changing picture gallery for your blog or webpageHere is your chance to put a rotating picture gallery of the cats of CatNews.org on your blog or website.Drop this code into your page and the gallery will function just like the pictures you see on my site, changing each time your visitor refreshes the page. Gallery 1 Gallery 2 Gallery 3 Focus On Cat HealthFeline Lymphoma Can Go All OverThe number one cause of death in companion animals in this country is cancer. In our feline friends a specific type of cancer, lymphoma, is very common. The disease originates in the lymphocytes (white blood cells) of the immune system and frequently invades the lymph nodes causing them to enlarge.Dr. Laura Garrett is a veterinary oncologist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana. She says, "lymphoma is common in middle-aged to older cats." Although it usually starts in tissues associated with the immune system (lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and bone marrow), it can set up shop in almost any part of the body because it has basically hijacked the blood supply. Today, the most common form of lymphoma in cats is the gastro-intestinal variety. Patients present with symptoms such as weight loss, a loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, years ago there was a different kind of lymphoma that predominated. Multicentric (lymph node invasion) and mediastinal (a structure in the chest) forms used to be the most common. But as less and less cats become infected with the feline leukemia virus, these forms of the disease are less common. "If a young cat is diagnosed with lymphoma it is usually FeLV [feline leukemia virus] positive," explains Dr. Garrett. This virus is directly linked to most forms of lymphoma, except the gastro-intestinal type that is now most prevalent. A cat infected with FeLV is 77 times more likely to develop lymphoma, and researchers have now shown that the virus can cause certain cells in the body to turn into malignant varieties. A different type of virus that many cat owners have heard of, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), or more commonly known as "feline AIDS," can also increase the risk of lymphoma developing in infected cats. Continue Reading Cat Blood TypesCats have A, B and AB (rare) blood types. Most cats in the United States have type A blood - something like 99% of domestic shorthair cats have Type A blood. This ratio varies from country to country. Other cat breeds have a much higher incidence of Type B blood. As the popularity of purebred cats increases it is likely that the ratio of cats with Type B blood will also increase. There is no "universal donor" blood type in cats - a very small amount of the wrong blood type can kill a cat if is is sensitized to the blood. This can be an issue in some cat breeds. In particular, British Shorthair, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex cats, where the percentage of Type B cats is much higher, perhaps as high as 50%. Other breeds with significant percentages of Type B blood include the Abyssinian, Himalayan, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, Somali and Sphinx breeds. (preceding information from Urs Giger, University of Pennsylvania, Kirk's XI). If a Type B queen (mother cat) gives birth to Type A kittens, severe reactions can occur in the kittens Continue Reading Lab Blood Work Tests for CatsCats require blood work tests when they need to diagnosed for different diseases. Blood tests are widely used in veterinary medicine. The results are measured against normal values, which are typically present in healthy pets; these values differ across species. The lab test results may be influenced by certain drugs, so always inform your vet about the medication of your pet prior to blood tests. Prior to certain blood tests, your cat should fast.Complete Blood Count The complete blood count is a blood test that is very frequently employed to inform the vet about the amount of different types of cells in the blood flow of the cat. The red blood cell count as well as the white blood cell count and the hemoglobin are important values to determine the condition of the cat. Red blood cells transport the oxygen to the vital organs, while white cells help fighting infections. A low red blood cell count can indicate anemia, while a high amount of white blood cells can indicate an infection or a viral disease. Platelets help the blood to clot. If the platelet count is low the cat may have a destroyed bone marrow or an autoimmune disease. Hematocrit or packed cell volume (PCV) may also measure the red blood cell count. Commonly Performed Blood Tests There are numerous tests that can be performed on a cat to determine his health condition. Some tests will show how a particular organ functions, while other tests will give a general overview. The following tests are most commonly performed in felines: Continue Reading Focus On Cat BreedsBritish Shorthair Cat Breed Characteristics, Info and Health ProblemsTo many, the British Shorthair is a the epitome of a lazy feline, one who loves to relax. This misrepresentation owes itself to the plump body of the British Shorthair. In actual fact, the British Shorthair is actually a cat that was common in farms and is acknowledged for its skill in trapping and hunting mice and other small rodents.History - Bred in the nineteenth century, the British Shorthair was a favorite in many households until distinct breeds began popping up in the mide twentieth century. Not wanting this beautiful, historical cat to become extinct, a couple of dedicated cat lover's worked perilously to ensure its survival. It wasn't until the late twentieth century, that these wonderful cats were introduced in the United States, where cat fanciers became enthralled with their unusual personality and size. Appearance - There are a variety of colors and one shade was so popular; it was the only shade and color credited by cat associations for years to come. British Blue was the name of the color of choice, but after World War II, this distinct color of British Shorthairs almost became nonexistent. Enthusiasts of this breed, wanted to preserve conserve the unique blue hue, bred the remaining blue shorthairs with Blue Persians. This created an increase in the gene pool and literally saved the specific shade from utter elimination. There are different colors to choose from which consist of white, bi-colors, smoke, totoiseshell, point colors with orange or blue eyes. The British Shorthair has a roundish head and wide cheeks as well as a thick and relatively short tail. The British Shorthair, also known for its stockiness, is a large specimen of cat weighing in at a substantial nine to eighteen pounds. British Shorthair Cat Behavior and Characteristics - It is not a cat that demands incessant attention and affection. This breed behavior is highly content to go about its day doing its own thing. The British Shorthair is not suitable for those who desire friendly felines as this breed is not as socially inclined. This breed is truly happy when the food bowl is filled and his activities are his to control. There is little need to cuddle or entertain this breed in order to keep them content. Continue Reading Grooming Tips for Preventing Matted Cat HairMatted cat hair is entangled hair that ends up in tight knots. Long haired breeds are more susceptible to the condition than other pets. Cat hair is divided into three categories as each type of hair performs a certain role. The types of cat hair include awn hair, down hair and guard hair. The various function of cat hair involves protection from environmental contaminants, heat and cold. The uppermost layer of cat hair also determines the color of individual pets.Cat Hair Conditions Cats shed their fur during specific periods. However, fur loss that's caused due to skin conditions such as alopecia, dermatitis or skin allergy needs medical treatment. Although cats routinely groom themselves to maintain their fur coats, pets also develop conditions such as cat hairball due to the ingestion of hair during routine grooming. Pet owners should thus groom the cat with a brush to avoid excessive self-grooming and cat hairballs. Cats that appear sick or lethargic may avoid their routine grooming which in turn leads to matted hair. Thick knots are difficult to detangle with a comb and may cause the pet pain, if the mats are located towards sensitive areas of the body.
