Energetic Cats Sure Do Make Life InterestingWhen I adopted a lovely white cat named Beau, he instantly brought spice, song and a lot of fun into our household with his many quirks. My other two cats are for the most part pretty easy going. Their only concerns are when dinner time is, as they sleep in their cozy places and come out for petting or food here and there. With the addition of this big, white longhaired cat, their lives would never be monotonous again. Not with Beau around. When introduced for the first time, Beau and Blackie hit it off immediately. Blackie is older, thin and doesn't know he's a cat. He loves everyone, and he instantly took to the newest member of the household. When he saw 26-pound Fluffy, though, Beau was intimidated, letting out a horn-blasting "woo", out of fear more than anything else. I now call this the "Beau alarm." He simply is alerting the world that Fluffy is walking by. Poor Fluffy, I know where he is 24-hours a day. He is a gentle couch potato who usually just ignores it. Every once in awhile Fluffy slyly whacks Beau upside the head just for the heck of it. He just can't resist instigating things just a little. It's actually pretty funny, nobody gets hurt, it's like two naughty boys harrassing one another with a game of "I'm not touching you". They sort of have an ongoing like-dislike relationship. Being highly sensitive, Beau is easily startled by shadows, lights and vibrations on the floor. His most common reaction is to make sounds from small chirps to loud horn blasts. He is the master of communication, and doesn't let a little thing like deafness slow him down. For no reason at all, unprovoked, he stares up at the ceiling, gets a wild look on his face, fur twitching and eyes dilated as he bellows out a series of loud "woos" that can make you jump out of your chair if you aren't expecting it. The hair on his back sometimes spikes up, as he gets all revved up, as if he wants to play with whatever imaginary friend he sees up there. He races around with his big, furry, white tail arched, until he gets tired. Beau makes up his own forms of entertainment, as normal toys just don't do it for him. I bought a laser disco light to give Beau an outlet for all that energy. The light reminds me of the old Spirograph toy I had as a kid, with constantly moving, colorful geometric patterns being blasted on the wall. Beau can hardly contain his excitement as he chases the lights he sees from the floor. The other two cats find watching Beau entertaining, as they sit on the sidelines. It's a win-win for everyone. Another way to wear off some of that intense feline energy is to open the curtains, and let the prism ball that hangs in the window fill the room with little rainbow dots. This is fun for all three cats, as they chase the constantly moving rainbows in unison. Beau and Blackie do their own rendition of Swan Lake ballet as they leap, twirl and bounce in the air. The whole goal to all of this is to tire Beau out, so he sleeps at night. When he sleeps, I sleep. His natural instinct is to party all night long. It's always good to keep a highly active cat things to do in general, so they don't get bored. When Beau bored, all heck breaks loose as he takes matters into his own paws. Shelves are cleared, electrical cords get chewed, and my desk is invaded. Beau likes to get on it and unleash total havoc. First order of business is to stomp on the computer keyboard until it makes all sorts of exotic noises it shouldn't. Then, clearing papers off horizontal surfaces is next. Important work papers? Be gone! If it's in his way, it usually will end up in a big pile on the floor. Then, the treat jar is knocked off the desk, to get the food inside. My furry little "wild child" is methodical in his desk takeovers. It's cute but I have to keep a close eye on him. His sensitivity is actually sweet, and I've come to accept his rambunctious, high-maintenance personality. It's never a dull moment here with Beau around. Our old apartment had large windows that the cats loved to sleep in. Beau would spread out on his back and luxuriate, but if he saw anyone walking down below, he'd perk up and yell a sonic-boom magnitude meow out the window at them. It didn't matter if it was day or night. Gophers, squirrels and other critters ran in terror from the loudness. He simply greeted everyone as they passed by, with an angelic look on his face at all times. In our neighborhood, he was affectionately called "Opera Kitty". Some even came to say goodbye as we moved. He had his own fan club. Who knew he would be such a "hit" by giving his daily concerts? I didn't. Now, his concert career is pretty much over. I live on a lake, with large birds as neighbors. He knows they are bigger than he is, so he keeps quiet. Smart move. After a busy day of playing, Beau makes a beeline for my lap, to cuddle. He has one eye on me at all times wanting to know where I'm at. He is dedicated and loving, and I wouldn't trade him for a well-behaved cat any day. In owning him, I've come to realize that overly inquisitive and energetic pets add interest to life. Beau has taught me patience, and to have fast reflexes. When I see him perched on top of the hood of my oven, balancing on the drip coffee maker or luxuriating on top of my stereo speakers, I run and bring him down. He rules the roost here. In return, I get a beautiful, loving and dedicated pet. Blackie and Fluffy get a peer who keeps them on their toes. Our household is a more dynamic place with the addition of this lovely cat. Owning a highly active pet isn't for everyone, but with a little patience and many forms of distractions, it can be trained to mellow out. We all have our own quirks. It's our job to be understanding and patient with one another's differences, it's definitely worth all the effort. Cats require a certain careful balance of vitamins and minerals as well as other nutrients in order to function at their best. By ingesting the proper combination of these vitamins, your cat will remain healthy and strong and is more likely to enjoy a long, happy, and illness free life. The exact vitamins which your cat will need are slightly different from the vitamins which you may see in a human multi-vitamin supplement, however, so it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the basics of feline nutrition before you purchase anything. Benefits of Multi-Vitamins for Cats Ideally, a good cat food will provide your pet with all of the different vitamins and nutrients that he needs. However, there are a number of reasons why he may still require a vitamin supplement as well. First, many cat foods do not provide the highest quality nutrients as a result of lower quality ingredients in the food. Second, sitting on the shelf for weeks or even longer can mean that the vitamins and nutrients which are naturally in cat food are reduced in quantity, thereby not giving your cat the nutrition he requires. For this reason, multi-vitamins are a good supplement to help your cat overall. Components of a Cat Good Multi-Vitamin Cats require certain enzymes and amino acids that can only be found in meat sources. For this reason, cats that do not eat meat will not be healthy and, ultimately, will not survive. Thus, many of the multi-vitamin supplements that are available for cats focus on some of these types of nutrients which are usually found in meat sources. These include: Continue Reading Something cool for BloggersFree changing picture gallery for your blog or webpageHere is your chance to put a rotating picture gallery of the cats of CatNews.org on your blog or website.Drop this code into your page and the gallery will function just like the pictures you see on my site, changing each time your visitor refreshes the page. Gallery 1 Gallery 2 Gallery 3 Focus On Cat HealthRoutine Geriatric Examination For CatsThroughout her life, your cat should have a routine examination at least once a year, but as she grows older, your veterinarian may recommend more frequent checkups. Early detection is the key in managing some of the problems that may come with age, and changes can occur quickly, so for most healthy seniors, six month intervals between exams are about right. At each routine visit, your vet will: - examine the teeth and gums for tartar, swelling, or inflammation - examine the ears for infection, ear mites, or other problems - examine the eyes for pupil response and retinal health - examine the skin and coat for parasites and other problems - check weight, temperature, respiration and heart rate - draw blood samples for laboratory analysis - examine a fecal sample to check for intestinal parasites You can help your veterinarian diagnose and treat problems your older cat may experience by observing and writing down physical or behavioral changes that you notice over time. The devil, as they say, is in the details, so write down the following information: - when you first saw each physical or behavior change - whether each condition or behavior is present all the time or only sometimes - how often the condition or behavior occurs - how long the condition or behavior lasts - what was happening around your cat at the time Continue Reading Cat Blood TypesCats have A, B and AB (rare) blood types. Most cats in the United States have type A blood - something like 99% of domestic shorthair cats have Type A blood. This ratio varies from country to country. Other cat breeds have a much higher incidence of Type B blood. As the popularity of purebred cats increases it is likely that the ratio of cats with Type B blood will also increase. There is no "universal donor" blood type in cats - a very small amount of the wrong blood type can kill a cat if is is sensitized to the blood. This can be an issue in some cat breeds. In particular, British Shorthair, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex cats, where the percentage of Type B cats is much higher, perhaps as high as 50%. Other breeds with significant percentages of Type B blood include the Abyssinian, Himalayan, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, Somali and Sphinx breeds. (preceding information from Urs Giger, University of Pennsylvania, Kirk's XI). If a Type B queen (mother cat) gives birth to Type A kittens, severe reactions can occur in the kittens Continue Reading Lab Blood Work Tests for CatsCats require blood work tests when they need to diagnosed for different diseases. Blood tests are widely used in veterinary medicine. The results are measured against normal values, which are typically present in healthy pets; these values differ across species. The lab test results may be influenced by certain drugs, so always inform your vet about the medication of your pet prior to blood tests. Prior to certain blood tests, your cat should fast.Complete Blood Count The complete blood count is a blood test that is very frequently employed to inform the vet about the amount of different types of cells in the blood flow of the cat. The red blood cell count as well as the white blood cell count and the hemoglobin are important values to determine the condition of the cat. Red blood cells transport the oxygen to the vital organs, while white cells help fighting infections. A low red blood cell count can indicate anemia, while a high amount of white blood cells can indicate an infection or a viral disease. Platelets help the blood to clot. If the platelet count is low the cat may have a destroyed bone marrow or an autoimmune disease. Hematocrit or packed cell volume (PCV) may also measure the red blood cell count. Commonly Performed Blood Tests There are numerous tests that can be performed on a cat to determine his health condition. Some tests will show how a particular organ functions, while other tests will give a general overview. The following tests are most commonly performed in felines: Continue Reading Focus On Cat BreedsGrooming Tips for Preventing Matted Cat HairMatted cat hair is entangled hair that ends up in tight knots. Long haired breeds are more susceptible to the condition than other pets. Cat hair is divided into three categories as each type of hair performs a certain role. The types of cat hair include awn hair, down hair and guard hair. The various function of cat hair involves protection from environmental contaminants, heat and cold. The uppermost layer of cat hair also determines the color of individual pets.Cat Hair Conditions Cats shed their fur during specific periods. However, fur loss that's caused due to skin conditions such as alopecia, dermatitis or skin allergy needs medical treatment. Although cats routinely groom themselves to maintain their fur coats, pets also develop conditions such as cat hairball due to the ingestion of hair during routine grooming. Pet owners should thus groom the cat with a brush to avoid excessive self-grooming and cat hairballs. Cats that appear sick or lethargic may avoid their routine grooming which in turn leads to matted hair. Thick knots are difficult to detangle with a comb and may cause the pet pain, if the mats are located towards sensitive areas of the body. Tips to Separate Matted Cat Hair Continue Reading Newest ArticlesCat Aggression - Is She Really a 'Bad Mama'? Or is She Just a 'Scare-dy Cat'Wikipedia describes aggression this way: "In psychology, as well as other social and behavioral sciences, aggression refers to behavior between members of the same species that is intended to cause pain or harm." Adopting a Cat from an Animal Shelter When choosing a cat to adopt from an animal shelter, there are several things that must be considered. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that adopting a cat means the furry friend will most likely be around for a long while. In fact, a cat can easily live up to 20 years. Therefore, owning a cat isn't just a small commitment in time. Once the decision is made to adopt a cat, there are four main things to look for to ensure the pet will be healthy and a good match for the family and its lifestyle. Cat First Aid and Emergency Care If you are cat owners, you may have to encounter emergency situations pertaining to your kitty. Your cat may fall ill anytime unexpectedly or meet an accident which would require you to act as her vet and treat her on urgent basis. In such emergency situations, mostly, you do not have the time to get across your vet. 5 Ways to Treat Cat Bladder Infection at Home They say that having a pet is like having a child and sometimes that really does ring true. Take cat bladder infection for example. If you let the infection spiral out of control and you rush your cat to the pet hospital at the last moment, you will probably be slapped with a bill of hundreds to thousands of dollars. What is Pine Cat Litter? Pine based cat litter is a natural alternative, much like many clay based litters. However one of the ways in which the pine type of litter differs from the clay is the number of additives that are infused into the litter to help it eliminate odors. The fact of the matter is that pine can not only absorb the liquid but also the odors without the need to add various chemicals to the process. What this means is that you have a product that is truly natural with just a minimum of chemicals added. Also, the pine scent does not just mask the strong ammonia scent of cat urine. The pine effectively kills the smell as it absorbs the moisture, and continues to emit a pleasing scent of pine What Are the Top 10 Most Popular Pedigreed Cat Breeds?
