Cats are born with high levels of lactulase, an enzyme that breaks down the sugar in the milk during nursing. As kittens age, the level of lactulase drops and the ability to tolerate the sugar found in milk (lactulose) decreases. So a previously lactose-tolerant kitten becomes a lactose-intolerant adult. Most adult cats have this low tolerance for milk sugars so giving them milk or other dairy products can make them gassy and cause diarrhea. It can also spark pancreatitis in sensitive individuals.Some veterinarians have put the stool softening property of lactulose intolerance to work--using it to treat constipation. To keep with tradition the only time of the year that I make or sell this fruitcake is during the Christmas holidays, and in my mind you cannot get a better fruitcake.
