It is a bi-lobed structure in the neck produces thyroid hormone. The main function of thyroid hormone is to regulate the metabolic rate in the body. Thyroid hormone affects every cell in the body. Hyperthyroidism is the overproduction of thyroid hormone.According to veterinarians at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine at Urbana, this is the most common endocrine disease in cats. It occurs in middle aged to older cats and has no breed or sex predisposition. There are two causes for the development of hyperthyroidism in cats. Most commonly, the thyroid gland will enlarge and begin to produce excess thyroid hormone without spreading to other parts of the body. The second cause is a diffuse enlargement of the thyroid gland, generally producing less thyroid hormone, but traveling to distant parts of the body. Veterinarians note that clinical signs are usually slow and gradual in onset, often taking up to a year to be noticed. The signs of hyperthyroidism are weight loss (most common), excess drinking and urinating, hair loss, diarrhea, vomition and hyperactivity. Excess thyroid hormone turns up the cat's internal thermometer so they will be unable to tolerate heat and will seek out the coolest spot in the house. Heart disease is often associated with hyperthyroidism. These cats have excessive heart rates and heart muscle changes that can lead to heart failure and death. These cardiac changes also lead to changes in breathing, such as panting and an inability to handle stress or exercise. Diagnosis of hyperthyroidism can be done by checking baseline levels of thyroid hormone in the body. This test can be run easily in most veterinary clinics or at local laboratories. Veterinarians see 90-95% of hyperthyroid cats with abnormally high baseline levels of thyroid hormone. For those cases that are suspected of having hyperthyroidism, but do not have abnormal levels of thyroid hormone, a thyroid suppression test can be performed to help confirm a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. There are three main treatments for hyperthyroidism: 1. Drug therapy - The drugs used inhibit the synthesis of thyroid hormone. There are many side effects of drug therapy and the medical treatment would be life long. This treatment is usually used in the short term until one of the following two therapies can be instituted. 2. Surgery - This option is highly effective and routinely done. Some of the concerns with this therapy are recurrence of the disease if only one of the lobes is removed, removal of the parathyroid gland (which is critical for calcium regulation in the body), and anesthetic risk for cats that have developed heart problems. 3. Radioactive Iodine - This is a newer form of treatment and consists of injecting radioactive particles that concentrate in the thyroid gland and are destructive to it. These cats need to be hospitalized about 5 days until their radioactive levels fall to acceptable levels. While this sounds dangerous, it is very safe, effective and non-stressful to the patient. One side effect of treatment with surgery and radioactive iodine, is the development of hypo-thyroidism. Veterinarians agree that this is a minor complication that can be treated with thyroid supplementation that is readily available and extremely affordable. Once this disease has been treated, and thyroid hormone levels return to normal, these cats can live normal and healthy lives. As boarding catteries usually have other pets in their care, time in an outdoor play area is usually limited so each of their guests can enjoy time outside. Continue Reading How To Find a Lost CatCats can occasionally wander off, and this can be a very scary time for pet owners. Most cats are found quickly, but it can take some effort for this to happen. If you are trying to find a lost cat, here are the steps you should take:1. Confirm that the cat is actually lost. Cats are known for being excellent at hiding, and may simply be taking a nap somewhere. Search your home thoroughly, and your yard if your cat is allowed outdoors. Confirming that you cannot find the cat is the first step of the search. Listen carefully for your cat’s meows; it is possible that your cat has wandered into somewhere where they have gotten stuck. 2. Try to entice the cat back home. Even if your indoor-only cat has escaped the home, they are often able to be lured back with food. Set a bowl of food outside and see if the cat comes wandering back. Tuna fish or soft cat food often works best for this, because their smell is easier to detect for a cat than that of dry cat food. However, watch out for other animals who may also be attracted by the scent. 3. Look around the neighborhood. Check all of the streets of your neighborhood. If your neighbors are outside, ask them if they have seen your cats. They may have seen your cat wandering around the neighborhood before you realized that he was lost. Call your cat’s name while searching the neighborhood, and your cat may come running. Make any other noise that your pet is familiar with, like the sound of a treat box being shaken or his favorite squeaky toy. 4. Put up signs. Place signs up around your neighborhood on mailboxes and posts. Your poster should say “LOST CAT” and include the cat’s color and a description as well as your contact info. Include a photo of your cat, if you have one. A color photo is best. These should be distributed up to a one mile radius from where your pet went missing. The genetics of ginger is explained in more detail in Tortoiseshell and Tri-Colour Cats (ginger is caused by the same gene as tortoiseshell), but this is a short version for those wanting a quick answer. The ginger gene changes black pigment into a reddish pigment. The ginger gene is carried on the X chromosome. A normal male cat has XY genetic makeup so he only needs to inherit one ginger gene for him to be a ginger cat. A normal female is XX genetic makeup so she must inherit two ginger genes to be a ginger cat. If she inherits only one ginger gene, she will be tortoiseshell with some ginger areas and some black/brown areas. The ginger gene is called a sex-linked gene because it is carried on a sex chromosome. Also, if you look closely, ginger cats have tabby markings though these may be faint or only visible on the face, tail and lower legs. They are also visible in the ginger areas of tortie cats. This is because the gene that turns off tabby to give solid colour cats does not work on the ginger colour. ARE GINGER FEMALES RARE? No. They are less common than ginger males, but they are not rare. In our feline friends a specific type of cancer, lymphoma, is very common. The disease originates in the lymphocytes (white blood cells) of the immune system and frequently invades the lymph nodes causing them to enlarge.Dr. Laura Garrett is a veterinary oncologist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana. She says, "lymphoma is common in middle-aged to older cats." Although it usually starts in tissues associated with the immune system (lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and bone marrow), it can set up shop in almost any part of the body because it has basically hijacked the blood supply. Today, the most common form of lymphoma in cats is the gastro-intestinal variety. Patients present with symptoms such as weight loss, a loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, years ago there was a different kind of lymphoma that predominated. Multicentric (lymph node invasion) and mediastinal (a structure in the chest) forms used to be the most common. But as less and less cats become infected with the feline leukemia virus, these forms of the disease are less common. "If a young cat is diagnosed with lymphoma it is usually FeLV [feline leukemia virus] positive," explains Dr. Garrett. This virus is directly linked to most forms of lymphoma, except the gastro-intestinal type that is now most prevalent. A cat infected with FeLV is 77 times more likely to develop lymphoma, and researchers have now shown that the virus can cause certain cells in the body to turn into malignant varieties. A different type of virus that many cat owners have heard of, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), or more commonly known as "feline AIDS," can also increase the risk of lymphoma developing in infected cats. Continue Reading PICA In Cats: EATING THE INEDIBLEPica means eating non-food items. The behaviour ranges from sucking, chewing and biting through to swallowing bites of items. Pica (from the Latin for "magpie"). It should not be confused with the suckling/nursing behaviour that some cats retain into adulthood. Commonly consumed target items include wool, string, elastic bands, electrical cords, tissues, tinsel and houseplants. Other objects have included cassette tape and the rubber "teat" section of a child's dummy (pacifier). Eating a little grass or herbs is normal cat behaviour; indoor cats may eat houseplants if there is no grass accessible.Like many obsessive or abnormal behaviours, the cat persists in doing it because the it is comforting or rewarding. The reward might be a nice taste, a full stomach or simply getting attention from the owner. The challenge is to make the behaviour unrewarding and redirect the behaviour into something rewarding for the cat and acceptable to the owner. Sometimes it is a displacement activity where an abnormal activity is substituted for normal behaviour because the cat can't express the more normal behaviour i.e. the normal behaviour is being thwarted. PICA, WOOL-SUCKING OR PREY-PLUCKING? Wool-sucking (or fabric-sucking) is a misdirected form of nursing. It's similar to a child's thumb-sucking in providing comfort.. Though sometimes mistaken for wool-eating, the item (sweater, blanket etc) is only sucked, not chewed, bitten or swallowed. Other commonly suckled objects include the cat's own tail, other cats or pet dogs. Behavioural treatment may be needed to build up the cat's confidence so it no longer resorts to "comfort nursing". In general, the younger a kitten is when it is weaned, the stronger the urge to nurse and the more persistent the comfort-nursing. Usually it decreases naturally as the kitten grows up, but it may persist or resurface in early-weaned or hand-reared cats, particularly at times of stress. More rarely it becomes a compulsive behaviour or progresses to pica. Some owners provide an old sweater for the cat to suckle on while protecting other garments by storing them away from the cat or dabbing hot chilli sauce onto them. Plucking the target resembles pica but is a misdirected prey-related activity. The cat holds down the (often woollen) blanket or garment with its paws and uses its teeth to pluck or tear at it. This is the same behaviour found when a cat plucks or tears fur, feather or flesh from larger prey items (e.g. pigeons). The clothing/blanket isn't swallowed anything the cats tears off is discarded. One of my cats, Sappho, exhibited this behaviour towards crochet blankets. In the case of one Siamese cat, it took a sock to its eating area and plucked at it periodically during the meal (canned food). The owner attributed this to "teeth cleaning" but it was probably misdirected prey-plucking/tearing behaviour as it only occurred at mealtimes. It is said to have originated from Greek Cycladic Islands located in the Aegean Sea. Formal development was initiated in the last decade of twentieth century by Cat Fancy breeders of Greece. As such it is one of the newer cat breeds and often mistakenly thought by some to be somewhat rare, even as the Aegean Cat itself is widespread throughout Greece.Aegean Cat is a medium sized feline with a predominantly white coat. There are other colors too including red, blue, cream and black, though a third to two thirds of the fur is white. Overall appearance is bi-colored or tri-colored. Though less profuse than those of Turkish Angora, hair are longish that protect it against cold winter, with a ruff around neck. There are no down hair. Built is athletic and muscular and the cat is known to be a good mouse hunter, a source of its admiration, particularly in rural areas. Body and tail are long. Head is broad and ears are widely set on the skull. Eyes are oriental in their shape with a color often in shades of green. Legs are strong and paws rounded. The standard size male cat will weight about 12 to 17 pounds. A teacup size female cat will weight about 3 to 6.5 pounds and the teacup size male will weight about 3 to 7.5 pounds. This is a good rule-of-thumb to keep in mind when shopping for a teacup. Some unscrupulous breeders will try to sell you a cat under ten pounds as a teacup when that weight falls within the normal weight range for a standard cat. When shopping for a teacup do not be fooled by a breeder that will try to sell you a runt or tell you that any cat less than ten pounds is a miniature.Teacup kittens come in a variety of breeds. These cats are bred to be small by inbreeding. The smallest cat of one breed is mated with the smallest cat of another breed progressively in each generation and with each mating a miniature or teacup cat is born. The result of this type of breeding results in dwarfism. There are two forms of dwarfism where teacups and other miniature animals are concerned and they are achondroplastic where the dominant gene will, through mutation, affect the hormones that control bone growth, and the primordial which occurs naturally.
