In this article, I discuss what we can do to help feral colonies and unsocializable ferals.In Part 1, "feral" is defined. In Part 2, I give some pointers on how to socialize a feral or semi-feral cat.I have been working with feral cats for about ten years. I have a colony that I tend to. It has ranged in size from ten to twenty five cats, with the average being seventeen cats. I have had a few great success stories, where the cat has found a home and lived happily ever after. Unfortunately, many more stories have not-so-happy endings. I call the colony, Forlorn Ferals. I built a web site for them, in order to help other feral cats and the humans that care about them. I am affiliated with Alliance for Stray Animals and People, Washington, DC. Joanna Harkin, the founder of ASAP, graciously extended the offer after reading a post I placed, concerning obtaining nonprofit status for my colony. The U.S. currently has a population of about sixty to one-hundred million feral cats and the shelters and animal control facilities are killing approximately six million domestic cats each year. A feral female is capable of producing twenty-four to thirty kittens a year. These three facts add up to a very large over population problem. Some communities have imposed strict laws covering licensing and breeding of all pets. Some communities, which have done mass euthanasia, just find that in a short period, they have the same problem again. I believe the only humane way of dealing with the problem of feral cat over population is to establish trap, neuter/spay, release programs. Non-lethal control is accepted by many well-respected institutions and organizations including the American Veterinary Medical Association, Cornell, and Tufts University veterinary schools, and the Doris Day Animal League. England and Denmark started much of the work in this field in the early 1970s and where the organization Cat Action Trust established extensive spay/neuter services for caretakers. Other countries, including South Africa and Australia, have been using the trap-neuter-return (TNR) control method for many years. TNR has been implemented successfully time and again in cities throughout the US. One must take into account that it is not the cat's fault for all this over population. The fault lies with humans, the irresponsible owners, people that want their children to witness the miracle of birth, the ones that think it's nature's way, breeders who are in it only for money, and people who say, "it's only a cat." As you can no doubt tell, I have a hard time dealing with these types of people. Alley Cat Allies, Washington, DC, and The Feral Cat Coalition, San Diego, CA are two of the forerunners in helping ferals. They have supplied much of the information you have read in this series of articles. Education, spay-and-neuter clinics, TNR programs for managing feral colonies are all ways to help ferals. There are rescue groups and colony caretakers in all areas that are in need of help. They need people to volunteer their time, food, supplies, and donations to continue their efforts. If you want to help, there are many ways, in which you may do this, including making sure your own animals are altered and properly taken care of. This is the last article of this series on feral cats and I'd like to leave you with something I hope you will like as much as I did. The best option would be to start them on a food that reminds them of what they prefer, but can be mixed with traditional wet food to help transition them over. This recipe is simple to make, and kittens find it delicious.Bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat and mix in one envelope of unflavored gelatin. Be sure to mix thoroughly, and do not boil the gelatin. If the water tastes bad or has a heavy chlorine taste when it comes out of the tap, consider using filtered water instead. Pour this mixture into a blender along with half of a 12 ounce can of goat's milk. Blend just long enough to combine thoroughly. Do not substitute cow's milk because cats tend to be lactose intolerant. Using cow's milk can lead to discomfort, diarrhea, and worse if fed to kittens. Add the following ingredients one at a time. After each addition, blend briefly to combine before moving on to the next. You will want to use the lowest setting to avoid overmixing. Add: 3 tbsp full fat yogurt, 3 tbsp real mayonnaise, 3 tsp light corn syrup, and 1 raw egg yolk. Concerning the egg yolk, raw eggs carry a small risk of salmonella poisoning. To eliminate any risk of accidentally passing this on to your kittens, use eggs that have been pasteurized in their shells. You can serve the completed homemade kitten food the way it is, or you can store it for use later. To store for later usage, cover the mixture tightly in a small container. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to ten days or in your freezer for up to three months. If you are going to use food that you have prepared in advance, you will want to warm it up before serving, especially if it is coming from the refrigerator or freezer. Cold food causes severe stomach upset in kittens. Warming it up will also make it more aromatic, and thus more appetizing to the kittens. Her kittens will simply follow what she does. However, ultimately, each cat should have its own litter tray or else it may create a host of other litter tray problems for you!For most kitten owners, the mother cat is not in the home if the kitten was orphaned or purchased. But this is not a problem. It is easy to litter train a cat when it's still a little kitten. Cats are creatures of habit and it may not be as easy to litter train once they have become used to their favorite toilet spots. The key to litter training a kitten is to let it get used to the litter tray as soon as possible. You will need to manually place your kitten onto the tray initially, as it is neither used to it nor is it able to climb over the edge to get in. Most kittens would defecate soon after waking up and after a meal. You could place your kitten in the litter tray during these times and after a few weeks, your kitten would get used to the routine and it would become a habit. Just be sure to place the litter tray a reasonable distance away from where the kitten is fed and where it sleeps. Cats and kittens are fastidious creatures and do not like to do their toilet near where they eat and sleep. When a kitten is still very young, it will not be able to "cover up" very well after its toilet, as most adult cats are capable of. But you don't have to worry about this. Once they are about 1 to 2 months old, they will instinctively know how to cover up their poop. In the wild or in the garden, cats will scoop soil and earth to cover but in the home, if you provide commercial cat litter, they will naturally scoop the litter to cover up the poop. You will notice, even if you only provide a newspaper for their soiling, your kitten will still scoop at the newspaper in an instinctive act to cover up their poop. Although you can expect to pick up poop after your kitten in the first few weeks, litter training a kitten is relatively easy and can be 100% trouble-free once it gets used to the routine of using the litter tray. If a cat craves your companionship it is because she has chosen you and because you have earned her love, trust, respect and affection. In my own experience, cats are wonderfully loving and affectionate friends. True, they may not be waiting by the door, wagging their tails, when you come home. On the other hand, one of my cats does wait by the door when we come home and our other cat is constantly seeking eye contact with us. As soon as we look at her, she meows to solicit our attention. They both show affection and they love to receive it and few activities are more relaxing than sitting on a sofa stroking a cat for hours on end. Cats are so soft and warm to the touch, and they love to curl up on your lap to be patted and given chin and belly rubs. In addition to the emotional reasons that so many people love cats, there are also many practical reasons that cats share so many of our lives and homes. They are a very practical choice of house pet, especially for city dwellers. They are small and thus easily adapt to life in a small urban apartment. They don't need to be taken outdoors for daily walks, making them easier to care for than dogs, especially for people who are at work all day or who lack a big yard or who hate to walk in the rain. Cats are also very clean and quiet and they don't track mud onto your carpets, chase cars or bark at passers-by, which could attract the wrath of your neighbors. Cats are smart and kittens are easily trained to use litter boxes, making them far neater and far easier to assimilate into a household than are puppies. Because of their small size, cats don't eat the quantities of food required by large dogs, making cats more practical than dogs for families with smaller budgets. It's also feasible to share a home with several cats at one time. Cats were first welcomed into human homes for their ability to kill mice, for their usefulness to humans, but for me this is a negative point. When your cat starts to go into shock, their rectal temperature will drop below 100 degrees Fahrenheit but taking their temperature is probably the last thing you will think of in this emergency situation. However, if you can, it will confirm it; it you can not, quickly feel both their legs as well as their skin in several places. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that approximately 1.4 million Americans suffer from ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, two specific disorders that fall under the umbrella term of IBD.
