Do Cats Need Vitamins?Pet owners of today face a wide variety of choices when deciding what to buy for their cats. These choices can and will determine the health of the feline. Good nutritional choices will mean a long, sustainable, illness-free life. Bad choices can mean suffering and premature aging and death for the animal.
What do you need to know about helping your cat remain healthy? Well there are several options. First of all a feline is a carnivore. Cats have always needed the nutrition of meat in order to survive. In fact in the wild cats will hunt their meat, for example just look at lions and tigers. Your domestic cat should not be any different with regard to offering protein in the meal. Water is also an important source of nutrients. To maintain healthy weight water is needed.
Other vitamins your cat needs include vitamin A, D, E and B complex. Also niacin, riboflavin, and thiamin are needed for a complete nutritional complement. Taurine is an important amino acid for felines. They cannot manufacture enough of this nutritional supplement by themselves. One supplement they do not need to consume is vitamin C. Cats synthesize enough of this nutrient within their bodies, as well as vitamin K.
Other vitamins and minerals like calcium are important but keep in mind that overdoing the supplement portion of your pet’s intake can be problematic as well. Always check to make sure the proper dosage has been adhered to before feeding your cat vitamins and minerals. And keep in mind the vitamins they do not need to consume.
They need copper, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, selenium, and other supplements but they also need natural sunlight, exercise, though not as much as a dog, and proper attention in order to be fully healthy. Think of your cats as total beings, not just something you feed everyday. Make sure they get plenty of play everyday with household toys or cat tree, cat furniture they can climb on. Many items can be designed with their enjoyment in mind, including where they sleep.
There are plenty of ways to feed them prepared meals and if this is the route you go, make sure the storage and handling of this food, especially any meat, is done in the proper way. The benefit of preparing meals for your pets is twofold. First, it encourages the pet owner to take responsibility for the health of their pets. By taking the direct responsibility of what goes into their pet’s mouth, the owner is learning by doing and seeing what works for their animal.
The second and arguably the most important benefit to preparing your pet’s meals yourself is that you can avoid the chemicals and by-products found in most store bought food. These by-products have no place in the natural diet of a cat or any animal. Cats need nutritious substances that come from the earth and do not include man-made chemicals or additives.

Homemade Kitten FoodDo you need a cheap, healthy alternative to store bought kitten food to help wean your kittens off their mother's milk and transition them to traditional canned kitten food? More than likely, they have shown little interest in regular canned food, preferring the milk to anything you might put in their bowl. Dry food will also be too hard on their developing teeth. The best option would be to start them on a food that reminds them of what they prefer, but can be mixed with traditional wet food to help transition them over. This recipe is simple to make, and kittens find it delicious.
Bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat and mix in one envelope of unflavored gelatin. Be sure to mix thoroughly, and do not boil the gelatin. If the water tastes bad or has a heavy chlorine taste when it comes out of the tap, consider using filtered water instead.
Pour this mixture into a blender along with half of a 12 ounce can of goat's milk. Blend just long enough to combine thoroughly. Do not substitute cow's milk because cats tend to be lactose intolerant. Using cow's milk can lead to discomfort, diarrhea, and worse if fed to kittens.
Add the following ingredients one at a time. After each addition, blend briefly to combine before moving on to the next. You will want to use the lowest setting to avoid overmixing. Add: 3 tbsp full fat yogurt, 3 tbsp real mayonnaise, 3 tsp light corn syrup, and 1 raw egg yolk. Concerning the egg yolk, raw eggs carry a small risk of salmonella poisoning. To eliminate any risk of accidentally passing this on to your kittens, use eggs that have been pasteurized in their shells.
You can serve the completed homemade kitten food the way it is, or you can store it for use later. To store for later usage, cover the mixture tightly in a small container. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to ten days or in your freezer for up to three months.
If you are going to use food that you have prepared in advance, you will want to warm it up before serving, especially if it is coming from the refrigerator or freezer. Cold food causes severe stomach upset in kittens. Warming it up will also make it more aromatic, and thus more appetizing to the kittens.

Getting Ready for the Newborn KittensCaring for your cat during pregnancy may require a lot of time and effort in your part but it is a very wonderful and rewarding experience. But after the kittens are already born, you will need to do a different task and that is to take care of the newborn kittens. These kittens will need special kind of attention and care and you must make sure that you could provide it to them.
One good way to start is to prepare your home for the arrival of the newborn kittens. Kittens tend to play with, chew, or nibble anything that attracts their interest like plants, cords, and other materials. You should remove the things that could be harmful to the newborn kittens like anything that could poison them or hurt them. Electrical cords must be kept out of reach. Look for anything sharp and pointed and remove them from the area immediately. Deal with anything that could strangle your kitten like ropes, ribbons, and cords to provide a safer place for your kittens.
You might also want to save your curtains and drapes from kitten scratches so it would be advisable to tie them up so your kittens will not be able to reach them. Make sure that the cabinet for your cleaning liquids are out of your kittens’ reach. Most of these cleaning liquids are poisonous and you wouldn't want your kitty to play with them to prevent any kind of accident.
Another good preparation that you should not forget is to shop for things that your kitten will need. You will have to shop for foods that are suitable for newborn kittens. You should opt for foods that could give your kittens the kind of nutrition they need for growth. The food should also be easily digestible by kittens to prevent any troubles with their tummy.
You should also get them the things they need like their own bowls, kitty basket or bed, blanket, litter box, and toys. This is to ensure that your kittens will be comfortable and that they will have a good playing time. You should provide them with warm and comfortable place or area to sleep in. When choosing toys for your little kittens, make sure that they are safe and will not put the safety of your kittens at risk.
Lastly, you must make sure that your kittens are healthy. After birth, you could have a vet take a look at them to check them up for any illness and to give them vaccines that they need. If your vet saw some signs and symptoms that suggest illness, your kitten might be subjected to some tests and examinations. This is to ensure that they will grow healthy and will reduce the risk of getting sick. These things will help prepare you and your home for the arrival of your cat’s newborn kittens. You will not have to get worried about their safety inside your home and you can be sure that you will able to provide them with anything they need for them to grow happy and healthy.

Feline Anxiety Causes Cat Litter Box Problems
Cats experience anxiety and get stressed out just like us human staffers. Unlike people, cats don't have a lot of creative ways to express their feelings. Unfortunately, when cats suffer from stress and anxiety, they generally communicate it in a very clear way that can really turn humans upside down. They usually tell us by not using the cat litter box.
- Moving to a new home
- Gaining a new household member, animal or human
- You change jobs and start a new schedule
- You bring new furniture into your home
- Kitty's favorite person moves out, and she misses that individual
- Construction and/or remodeling of your home
- Relocation of her cat litter box(es)
- Change in type of cat litter
Consult with your vet on the best course of action to help your kitty quickly get over her stress and anxiety. Reassure your cat with lots of extra attention and love, and this too shall pass!

How to Deal with a Cat that has a Broken Bone
Fractured Legs in CatsFractured legs in cats are by far the most common type of fracture, but bone fractures can occur any where in your pet body. When these fractures do affect the legs, however, although the fracture itself may not be that severe, it can cause a tremendous amount of stress in your cat. Once they lose their ability to walk normally, it starts to place pressure on the legs that are not affected as well as mental pressure.
In fully understanding fractured legs in cats, it is very helpful to understand the four most common types of fractures that might occur: closed, compound, epiphyseal or growth plate, and greenstick or hairline. The first three forms can also be categorized by whether they are simple forms of fractures in which your cats bones have broken in only two or three places, or if they are comminuted. Comminuted is where your cats bones have shattered into several pieces.
Fractured legs in cats begin with the simplest form of fracture, which is referred to as closed. This is a situation where the bone itself is fractured, but the overlying skin is still completely intact and as a result, it is not penetrated.
This form of a fracture in your cat is where small cracks have occurred within their bone. The bone is still basically intake but it is considered cracked. With this form of fracture, your cats bone is not completely broken and is considered a hairline fracture.

Cat Incontinence - 5 Things to Do When You Notice Your Cat Dribbling UrineCat incontinence is unpleasant to say the least. You may find that your house starts smelling like a litter box because your cat can't seem to control his urine flow.
Incontinence in cats can be solved however. It has many underlying causes including:
Why not follow these 5 tips to keep it from being so problematic for your cat?
1. Be prudent with conventional prescription medications (always consult your veterinarian). Most medications have side effects. Be aware of the impact of these types of approaches. Instead, consider giving your cat some Vitamin C. It will help to improve his immune functioning and improve his overall health.
Cat incontinence caused by infection can be prevented and alleviated with Vitamin C because it improves his ability to fight off infection.
2. Keep your cat's litter box tidy. Try to clean it each time he soils it. This is important because some cats avoid their litter boxes when they get messy. Holding urine in for too long can actually lead to bacterial infections and thus incontinence in cats.

The Cat With Kidney ProblemsDoes your cat have a kidney problem? Then you are not only going to need to learn more cat information in general so that you can comprehend the animal better but as well you are going to need to produce a proper feline kidney diet.
Changing to a feline kidney diet will help in a number of ways; it is going to make certain that your cat is receiving all the nutrition they require to strive. A feline kidney diet needs to include special vitamins and minerals than you do not generally get in a regular feline diet because there are kidney problems.
Where to begin
To understand what is going to help your cat and what dietary changes it will require you need to understand the cat. Cats are naturally carnivores, and the greatest way to formulate a feline kidney diet plan is to make sure to comprise foods that the cats would eat out in the wild, as this is where they initially come from.
The next step is where it gets tough. You are going to need to understand how to read a pet food ingredient label, so you can make sure that you are selecting the correct food for your cat. The current labeling system for pet foods is gravely deficient in functional information and looking at the list of ingredients will tend to give an imperfect picture of what is in fact in the food in terms of the quantity of each ingredient.
Even though you may have heard different, the majority if not all of the so-called prescription diets that are sold in veterinary hospitals are not formulated for most favorable health of a carnivore. A lot of of these products include corn, wheat and soy which really have no logical place in a cat's diet even though most people incorrectly think this because this is believed by so many people.
Diet is the brick and mortar of health, and so if you want your cat to live a long healthy life, you are going to need to make sure that they are eating all the right foods. Not only do you need to provide them with a proper feline kidney diet but as well make sure that they are drinking enough water and getting enough exercise.
You will want to do as a great deal investigation of your own, so that you can find out more about cats in general and as well about your cat in particular, what their health problems are and what you can do to obtain care of them and get them to a most favorable condition of health.

Got Cat Urine Smell Blues? It's a couple of hours before my big party and I'm almost ready to go out. I took the cats to the neighborhood vet for a weekend stay. I cleaned the house from top to bottom and everything looks great. As I leave to go and pick up some last minute items for the party, I went back into the house only to be greeted with the awful smell of cat urine when I entered the door.
Surely, the cat smell should be gone. The rugs were shampooed. The party starts in 4 hours and my house smells like industrial cleaner, air freshener and cat pee.
It is very embarrassing when you have company over, your house is clean and your guests get a whiff of cat urine. Not good at all.
For those of you who have problems getting rid of cat urine odor, this one's for you. Here are some home remedies to help you kick the odor.
Cats are clean animals which have peculiar ways. The best way to control the place where a cat urinates is by always keeping their litter box clean. A cat will not urinate in its litter box if it can smell the odor of urine. Instead, it will find some other place to urinate like the carpet or that favorite rug which is so cozy.
A cat will urinate in the same spot until it can smell the unpleasant aroma of urine and then will seek another area.
One economical recipe for curing cat urine odor and stains from the carpet is to use common household elements such as vinegar, water, peroxide and baking soda. The way this works is you will first try to get up the excess urine from the carpet. Dilute vinegar with 3 parts water and soak on soiled area. Once you've soaked the area you can pour peroxide on the area and sprinkle with baking soda. Vacuum the excess.
This is a cheap economical way to remove cat urine odor from rugs and similar areas in your home.
Once I tried this home remedy, I realized that if I would just do this once or twice a week, my house would keep a fresh smell. The one key to keeping an odorless home, is to make sure that I am keeping the litter box as clean as possible so that the cats will feel comfortable peeing in their preferable place

The California Spangled CatA shorthair cat breed , California Spangled originated following a fateful visit by Hollywood script writer and animal lover Paul Casey to Tanzania, Africa, in the early nineteen seventies. Casey was shocked by rampant poaching of leopards there for their skin and after motivation by famed anthropologist Louis Leakey, decided to develop a breed that would resemble the spotted big cats in appearance and generate awareness among people regarding conservation of great cats in the wild. The idea was that if people own a spotted cat of their own, they would desist wearing of furs of other spotted cats. It was not until the mid nineteen eighties that Casey was finally able to develop the breed from a number of different cats including American and British Shorthairs, Abyssinians, Angoras, Manx and Siamese. Though the resulting Spangled cats gained initial popularity, they were not enthusiastically received by many cat fancies who were not so keen in adding another spotted cat to their registry at that time. Today very few of these purebred cats remain.
Medium sized cats with short hair, California Spangles are well muscled felines. They are lean and sculpted and move like their wild cat cousins even as they have entirely domestic genes in their heritage. Fur is short and velvety and occurs in a number of colors including black, blue, bronze, brown, charcoal, gold, red and silver. Spots are dark, well defined and preferably rounded or blocked. At times they are arranged into rosettes. Triangular and oval markings are also accepted. Tabby-like stripes often exist on head, chest, throat, legs and tail. Head is round with prominent cheek bones, almond shaped slanting golden to brown eyes and high set ears.
