Cat Training Tips

When starting to train a cat, a couple of things you will want to take in consideration. Learn more about your cat, have the proper tools to do the training and have lots of patience. Setting goals to high for you and your cat at training can get very stressful. Make it simple and fun for your cat training, then both you and your cat will enjoy the bonding from the training.

The right tools are essential when training your cat. Many different items, books, articles, and places will help you with all the items and information that you and your cat will need.

One of the first places that should be checks out is at the area vet. You will want to take your cat in for a check up. A cat that is ill, sick, or has something wrong with the bone structure is not going to be easy if at all trainable. With the help from your vet, they will be able to help you with some ideas about training your cat.

Getting as much information as you can, now that you have taken the cat to the vet and have gotten ideas and information from them, now is a time not to stop learning for yourself about your cat. Look for books and magazines that give good advice on training your cat. Especially if the cat may have a small defected this will be a good time to research for books and articles on the particular training that you would like to do for your cat . Check on the internet for articles on cat training for all types of behaviors and life styles of your cat.

Age and type of cat also does play a part when training your cat. The older cats and cats that are ill will not tolerate a lot of training if at all. There are many articles out on the market and internet to help with this issue.

Patience guidance, caring, and nurturing you cat will be a big asset when training your cat. NEVER harm your cat in anyway, they will not enjoy it, and can cause the cat to have a fear of you in return the cat will not come near you. By using a strong "NO" or loud noise to let the cat know that you do not approve of the behavior is the best way.

Allow the cat to use the natural behaviors and instinct with some of the training. We all would love the prefect cat that does nothing wrong and sits still on our command. This is not a good idea for a cat. Both you and the cat would be nothing but stressful

There are ways of training and using the behaviors, which you and your cat can both benefit. If the cat likes to scratch, buy or build a scratching post. If they like to jump, set up a hoop or stick, with working with your cat you will soon see this behavior going in the good behavior.

Another important thing is feeding your cat. This is important to the training as the cat will be under some stress from the changing in habits. Even doing it slowly and gradually there still is stress in the cats training. Feeding it a well balance healthy meal is important. Do you have a cat or a kitten? Feeding kittens, you will want to look at healthy bone, muscle and brain building foods. Snacks and treats you will want to make sure are healthy food for your cat. With part of the training, you will need to reward your cat with healthy small treats. Cat as with humans we can gain weight with over eating. If you own a cat, you will want to feed the cat, good healthy food to maintain the balance diet.

With training a cat or kitten for behaviors will be import steps to the relationship of you and your cat. Remember if you are stress most likely, your cat will be stress. Sitting with your cat for 20 minutes can relive some of the stress for both you and your cat.

Cats and Babies: 7 Tips for Healthy Coexistence

Cats and babies can coexist, but there are several factors that need to be considered. Cats are known to be very jealous of new babies and new pets, so you need to ensure your baby is safe and the cat is comfortable.

1. Prepare for the Baby’s Arrival
You need to establish some ground rules for the baby’s safety that the cat needs to respect; apply these rules before the arrival of the baby, so that the cat doesn’t associate the baby with the new interdictions.

2. Get a Crib for the Baby
Get a crib for your baby and make sure the cat does not make it his own or sleep in it. Cats and babies are not allowed to sleep together as the baby may suffocate.

Show the cat the crib but train him to know he is not allowed in the crib.

3. Cat Checkup
Cats may transmit a number of diseases to humans and babies are particularly susceptible to catching bacteria, worms and viruses. So you need to make sure your cat is healthy.

Schedule the vet checkup at least 2 months before the arrival of the baby, to make sure the parasites are gone. Fleas are particularly difficult to get rid of and it may take up to 6 weeks to fully eliminate them from the environment. Even if fleas cannot be transmitted to humans, the ingestion of a flea may lead to the formation of a tapeworm in the baby.

4. Gradual Introduction of the Baby
Given that cats may be very protective of their territory and owners, they can be very jealous when a baby appears. This is why the baby needs to be introduced gradually. First, keep the baby isolated and give the cat a blanket or a toy belonging to the baby. The cat will get accustomed to the baby’s scent.

When presenting the baby, one of the owners should offer a lot of affection to the cat.

A Squinting Cat May Signal Conjunctivitis
If your handsome Maine coon winks at you from across the room and doesn't stop, it's probably not saying, "Hey baby, can I buy you a drink?" In all likelihood it's squinting because its eye hurts. By definition, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the inner eyelid and the superficial layer of the eye.

Pet Horoscopes - ARIES: (3/21-4/20):
Aries cats are always bursting with energy. They love attention, petting and cuddling and are never shy. In fact, it may be hard to keep up with these hyperactive animals. Quick tempered, they are not the type to back down from a fight. They are easily embarrassed, so don't scold them in public. Reward good behavior with a special snack. Never give your cat "people food." Strong flavored and spicy treats are their favorite. The most difficult aspect of keeping an Aries cat is to get them to obey you. They may be difficult to housebreak. Firmness, a schedule, and repetition is what is needed.

CAPRICORN (12/22-1/21):
Capricorn cats stay young forever and tend to act like little kittens well into old age. They have endless endurance and will play happily hours on end. They make the best playmates for children. They can be moody and tend to sulk if they don't get their way. Be patient when training these cats as they tend to be slow learners. These cats are more than loyal to the family. They are always determined to please and your patience will be well rewarded

Cats Get Heartworm Disease, Too

Most dog owners are well aware of the deadly consequences a heartworm infection can have on their pet and strictly adhere to monthly preventatives. However, many cat owners are unaware that their pets are susceptible to these parasites as well, even if their feline friend lives only indoors. Because clinical signs of heartworm disease in cats are sometimes mistaken for other ailments, the disease may go undetected.

"Feline heartworm disease is very difficult to diagnose, but easy to prevent," says Dr. Allan Paul, a veterinary parasitologist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Because the disease is complex, testing for the parasites in cats can be confusing and, in most cases, more than one test is needed to make an accurate diagnosis.

Signs of heartworm disease in cats are somewhat nonspecific. Years ago the disease would have been diagnosed as feline asthma, but now veterinarians realize that cats can get heartworm disease, too.

Give Me Cat Training in Ten Minutes: My Cat is a Wild One

Really? Cat training in ten minutes? You are kidding right? Cat training is crucial to the proper development of your cat and in order to maintain control of your own home. While you may have a wild kitty, thinking that you are going to be able to complete cat training in ten minutes is simply not a reality. Cat training in 10 minutes just isn't going to happen. Learning how to cat care and to guide your cat into the behavior you want takes practice and consistency.

Consistent work with your cat and continual reinforcement are the two concepts that you need to achieve your goal of a well behaved cat. Teaching your cat the fundamentals of good behavior are the goals of all cat care. There aren't any magic tricks or cat training in ten minutes. But there are some great cat training aids found in many of today's pet stores that will help you in your cat training journey.

Yarns and Balls...An important part of curbing wild and crazy behavior is by giving your cat the exercise they need! Cats are playful by nature and kittens like to play with just anything. To avoid having them fiddle with fragile things, it is good to give them yarns or soft balls to play with. Older cats can be trained to use risk-free leads.

Cat are great at tricks! So take the time to teach your cat a few. Many cats can learn to fetch and even shake hands. If you are going to teach your cat some tricks, be sure to be consistent in training and to reinforce them with lost of positive encouragement. Treats are a great way to make this happen. Remember to reward your cat for a positive action. Cat treats are wonderful rewards and will make your cat much more willing to participate in cat training.

Multi-Vitamin for Cats

Many pet owners wish to provide their animals with the best health possible by giving them a multi-vitamin for cats. Cats require a certain careful balance of vitamins and minerals as well as other nutrients in order to function at their best. By ingesting the proper combination of these vitamins, your cat will remain healthy and strong and is more likely to enjoy a long, happy, and illness free life.

The exact vitamins which your cat will need are slightly different from the vitamins which you may see in a human multi-vitamin supplement, however, so it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the basics of feline nutrition before you purchase anything.

Benefits of Multi-Vitamins for Cats
Ideally, a good cat food will provide your pet with all of the different vitamins and nutrients that he needs. However, there are a number of reasons why he may still require a vitamin supplement as well. First, many cat foods do not provide the highest quality nutrients as a result of lower quality ingredients in the food. Second, sitting on the shelf for weeks or even longer can mean that the vitamins and nutrients which are naturally in cat food are reduced in quantity, thereby not giving your cat the nutrition he requires. For this reason, multi-vitamins are a good supplement to help your cat overall.

Components of a Cat Good Multi-Vitamin Cats require certain enzymes and amino acids that can only be found in meat sources. For this reason, cats that do not eat meat will not be healthy and, ultimately, will not survive. Thus, many of the multi-vitamin supplements that are available for cats focus on some of these types of nutrients which are usually found in meat sources. These include:

How to Treat Cat Ear Mites

How to Treat Cat Ear Mites -- powered by eHow.com

Why Does Your Cat Shake?

If you've been noticing your cat shake, periodically or steadily, one of several underlying conditions might be to blame. Generally, a cat will shake or vibrate as his muscles react to a good stretch. This is normal behavior, especially after a healthy nap. If your cat shakes while awake, as if cold, there are other symptoms and signs to look for when determining a possible problem.

Generalized Cat Tremors
Tremors are an involuntary and rhythmic shaking of the limbs, head or body. The location of the tremors, if localized, would be the first step in indicating a potential cause. Generalized tremors where the entire body is shaking could indicate a few things, the most common of which would be poisoning. Whether your cat goes outside or stays indoors, check to see if there are any toxic substances that may have been accessible. Anti-freeze, chemicals of any sort, and some plants may be particularly harmful to your cat. If you have recently made a change to your cat's diet, administered medication, or applied any type of flea and tick product, this may be causing your cat to shake. Some cats have been reported to be violently allergic to certain types of flea and tick medication.

Toxic food substances or medication may be causing a reaction as well. If generalized tremors are accompanied by problems using the litter box, an intestinal blockage due to disease or ingestion of a foreign substance may be to blame. Other causes of full-body shaking may include neurological disorders or hypomyelination, a condition that generally affects kittens and most often resolves itself without treatment.

Cat Blood Types

Cats have A, B and AB (rare) blood types. Most cats in the United States have type A blood - something like 99% of domestic shorthair cats have Type A blood. This ratio varies from country to country. Other cat breeds have a much higher incidence of Type B blood. As the popularity of purebred cats increases it is likely that the ratio of cats with Type B blood will also increase.

There is no "universal donor" blood type in cats - a very small amount of the wrong blood type can kill a cat if is is sensitized to the blood. This can be an issue in some cat breeds. In particular, British Shorthair, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex cats, where the percentage of Type B cats is much higher, perhaps as high as 50%. Other breeds with significant percentages of Type B blood include the Abyssinian, Himalayan, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, Somali and Sphinx breeds. (preceding information from Urs Giger, University of Pennsylvania, Kirk's XI).

If a Type B queen (mother cat) gives birth to Type A kittens, severe reactions can occur in the kittens

Lab Blood Work Tests for Cats

Cats require blood work tests when they need to diagnosed for different diseases. Blood tests are widely used in veterinary medicine. The results are measured against normal values, which are typically present in healthy pets; these values differ across species. The lab test results may be influenced by certain drugs, so always inform your vet about the medication of your pet prior to blood tests. Prior to certain blood tests, your cat should fast.

Complete Blood Count
The complete blood count is a blood test that is very frequently employed to inform the vet about the amount of different types of cells in the blood flow of the cat.

The red blood cell count as well as the white blood cell count and the hemoglobin are important values to determine the condition of the cat. Red blood cells transport the oxygen to the vital organs, while white cells help fighting infections.

A low red blood cell count can indicate anemia, while a high amount of white blood cells can indicate an infection or a viral disease.

Platelets help the blood to clot. If the platelet count is low the cat may have a destroyed bone marrow or an autoimmune disease.

Hematocrit or packed cell volume (PCV) may also measure the red blood cell count.

Commonly Performed Blood Tests There are numerous tests that can be performed on a cat to determine his health condition. Some tests will show how a particular organ functions, while other tests will give a general overview.

The following tests are most commonly performed in felines:

Grooming Tips for Preventing Matted Cat Hair

Matted cat hair is entangled hair that ends up in tight knots. Long haired breeds are more susceptible to the condition than other pets. Cat hair is divided into three categories as each type of hair performs a certain role. The types of cat hair include awn hair, down hair and guard hair. The various function of cat hair involves protection from environmental contaminants, heat and cold. The uppermost layer of cat hair also determines the color of individual pets.

Cat Hair Conditions
Cats shed their fur during specific periods. However, fur loss that's caused due to skin conditions such as alopecia, dermatitis or skin allergy needs medical treatment. Although cats routinely groom themselves to maintain their fur coats, pets also develop conditions such as cat hairball due to the ingestion of hair during routine grooming. Pet owners should thus groom the cat with a brush to avoid excessive self-grooming and cat hairballs. Cats that appear sick or lethargic may avoid their routine grooming which in turn leads to matted hair. Thick knots are difficult to detangle with a comb and may cause the pet pain, if the mats are located towards sensitive areas of the body.
