Kay decided to try using ashes in the litter box. She quickly ran into a bigger problem - those little paws produced jet-black paw prints all over her house. Clearly, ashes were not the solution to her problem. Kay decided to try sawdust, another popular alternative, in the cat pan. That didn't work well, either. She decided to go visit her neighbors, the Lowes, who operated a coal, ice, and sawdust supply company. Whoa! Wait a minute. A sawdust supply company? People actually sold this waste product? Let's sidetrack from our story for a moment. You read it correctly. Sawdust. You may find it hard to believe, but there once was a market for this stuff. They sold it as an industrial absorbent. Spill some grease or oil - drop some sawdust on it to absorb the spill. You get the idea. As you can imagine, sawdust and oil have one major problem - FIRE! So, the Lowes introduced a new absorbent material for these spills - a kiln-dried clay know as Fuller's Earth. Now we can get back to our story where we find Kay Draper visiting the Lowe facility in search of some sand for her cat's litter box... Here she ran into a 27 year old guy named Ed Lowe, who was working for his dad after his stint in the Navy. Ed was trying to expand the family business and had been unsuccessful in trying to convince chicken farmers to use the Fuller's Earth as a nesting material. And, like any good salesman, Ed had his trunk filled with his product. You know where this story is leading. Ed couldn't peddle the clay off on the chicken farmers, but he somehow convinced Kay that it would make a great cat litter (Not that he had ever tried it on a cat.) Kay shortly returned for more of the clay granules. She recommended the stuff to her friends, and soon they came calling for some Fuller's Earth. Ed had a hunch that he may be on to something big. He filled ten paper bags with the stuff and labeled them with a grease pencil - you guessed it - Kitty Litter. The stuff was not an overnight success, however. The initial five-pound bags sold for sixty-five cents, but no one would buy them. Ed told the local pet store owner to give the bags away, which he did. But once the customers saw how wonderful the product was, they were actually willing to pay money for the stuff. Ed traveled the country attending cat shows and visiting pet shops in an attempt to move the product. Cat owners eventually fell in love with the product, and the rest is cat litter history. A private investment group, collectively known as Golden Cat, purchased Ed's company for over 200 million dollars plus stock options in 1990. Ed retired and used part of his fortune to establish the Edward Lowe Foundation to help other entrepreneurs. Sadly, Ed Lowe passed away on October 4, 1995. The success of kitty litter enabled pet owners to keep cats inside their homes with little muss or fuss (let's not discuss smell). As a result, an entire industry consisting of cat foods, toys, grooming products, and the like was launched. Today, the traditional clay cat litter that Ed Lowe introduced still commands the lion's share of the market at approximately 55 percent. Catching up with 40 percent of sales is clumping litter. Clumping litter is made from clays such as sodium bentonite or attapulgus (it was originally found in Attapulgus, Georgia). These special clays bond well with a cat's waste and forms hard clumps that can be easily removed from the litter box. The remainder of the litter market is made up of a very wide variety of products. Pretty much anything goes here. They use cedar chips, pelletized newspaper, peels from citrus fruits, peanut hulls, corncobs, and semolina wheat (maybe someone can figure out how to use all of our tossed out non-absorbent plastic). What started out as a pile of nesting material has turned into an estimated 2.5 billion pound, three quarters of a billion dollar industry that even has its own Washington lobbyist. As with most things in modern society, spew removal is not as simple as one might first suspect. The results of my personal research indicate that there are three broad categories of spew that you, as a cat owner, ultimately will have to contend with:* the traditional hairball * the near-instantaneous upchuck of kibble just eaten (this will be designated a "kibble ball") * the ever-disgusting, viscous mixture of partially digested food and digestive juices that comes up several hours after a hearty meal. Each of these spew-types represents a different level of challenge in the attempt to destroy all evidence of the incident. We shall start with the easiest, the common hairball. A hairball can be easily distinguished from other forms of spew. It is a compact, moist but not sloppy, torpedo-shaped object that closely mirrors the color of your cat's fur. Due to their benign composition, hairballs can be dealt with immediately (preferable) or at a later date (non-optimum) with little risk of damage to the defiled object (which for this article we will assume is your carpet). Hairballs can be dealt with using a simple two-step process: 1. Remove the hairball gently from the scene of the accident.cat vomit Hairballs can be plucked, scooped or even rolled effectively from the rug using a variety of techniques and then disposed of. I prefer plastic spoons and knives that I get from fast food restaurants gratis. It is best to plan ahead and acquire these in anticipation of the need. The utensils can then be disposed of or recycled, in line with one's environmental beliefs. Stiff paper (higher quality junk mail) or cardboard (cereal box tops) are perfectly good alternatives. The primary goal in hairball removal is to not exert any downward force on the hairball, thereby driving any moist content further into the rug. Never attempt to run your vacuum over a hairball for this reason 2. Perform a simple dabbing-type cleanup of the area with a clean damp cloth or sponge. Using only water is the best approach. Avoid foot traffic until dry. Hairballs generally leave little trace on your rug once removed. A simple water clean up with a damp rag or sponge should suffice. Soap and water or a commercial rug cleaner can be used if necessary but these tend to attract dirt later on. Try to get away with just water if you can. I have used Resolve and Folex with good results when a stronger cleaner was needed. Read and follow the instructions on the bottles as these may lead to worse staining than the original cat spew. Kibbleballs are somewhat more troublesome to deal with. The kibbleball results when a cat meal is injested and then, in short order, "degested" into a pile on the floor. Depending upon your cat's peculiarities, there may well be multiple (though rarely more than three) piles to contend with. Many of the removal techniques that work on a hairball work just as well on a kibble ball as the true kibble ball is only slightly moist and has good shape retention characteristics. Continue Reading Multi-Vitamin for CatsMany pet owners wish to provide their animals with the best health possible by giving them a multi-vitamin for cats. Cats require a certain careful balance of vitamins and minerals as well as other nutrients in order to function at their best. By ingesting the proper combination of these vitamins, your cat will remain healthy and strong and is more likely to enjoy a long, happy, and illness free life. The exact vitamins which your cat will need are slightly different from the vitamins which you may see in a human multi-vitamin supplement, however, so it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the basics of feline nutrition before you purchase anything. Benefits of Multi-Vitamins for Cats Ideally, a good cat food will provide your pet with all of the different vitamins and nutrients that he needs. However, there are a number of reasons why he may still require a vitamin supplement as well. First, many cat foods do not provide the highest quality nutrients as a result of lower quality ingredients in the food. Second, sitting on the shelf for weeks or even longer can mean that the vitamins and nutrients which are naturally in cat food are reduced in quantity, thereby not giving your cat the nutrition he requires. For this reason, multi-vitamins are a good supplement to help your cat overall. Components of a Cat Good Multi-Vitamin Cats require certain enzymes and amino acids that can only be found in meat sources. For this reason, cats that do not eat meat will not be healthy and, ultimately, will not survive. Thus, many of the multi-vitamin supplements that are available for cats focus on some of these types of nutrients which are usually found in meat sources. These include: Continue Reading Something cool for BloggersFree changing picture gallery for your blog or webpageHere is your chance to put a rotating picture gallery of the cats of CatNews.org on your blog or website.Drop this code into your page and the gallery will function just like the pictures you see on my site, changing each time your visitor refreshes the page. A lot of pet owners just don't realize that what they feed their cat is essential to their cat's urinary health. In this article, you'll learn what to look for in a quality cat food and how to supplement your cat's diet to prevent your cat from ever suffering from urinary problems again.Urinary Tract Cat Food We all know that food is our first medicine. Eating the proper food is our primary defense against disease. What is true for humans is also true for your favorite feline. To give your cat the best possible diet, you need to start reading labels. Although I could recommend a brand, you may not be able to find it in your area, so the best way to start is at your local pet store chain or health food store. You can also try big health food stores, like Whole Foods. What Food to Give A Cat with Urinary Blockage Look for food that contains the following. The first ingredient on the label should be the first ingredient listed below: Continue Reading Routine Geriatric Examination For CatsThroughout her life, your cat should have a routine examination at least once a year, but as she grows older, your veterinarian may recommend more frequent checkups. Early detection is the key in managing some of the problems that may come with age, and changes can occur quickly, so for most healthy seniors, six month intervals between exams are about right. At each routine visit, your vet will: - examine the teeth and gums for tartar, swelling, or inflammation - examine the ears for infection, ear mites, or other problems - examine the eyes for pupil response and retinal health - examine the skin and coat for parasites and other problems - check weight, temperature, respiration and heart rate - draw blood samples for laboratory analysis - examine a fecal sample to check for intestinal parasites You can help your veterinarian diagnose and treat problems your older cat may experience by observing and writing down physical or behavioral changes that you notice over time. The devil, as they say, is in the details, so write down the following information: - when you first saw each physical or behavior change - whether each condition or behavior is present all the time or only sometimes - how often the condition or behavior occurs - how long the condition or behavior lasts - what was happening around your cat at the time Continue Reading Cat Blood TypesCats have A, B and AB (rare) blood types. Most cats in the United States have type A blood - something like 99% of domestic shorthair cats have Type A blood. This ratio varies from country to country. Other cat breeds have a much higher incidence of Type B blood. As the popularity of purebred cats increases it is likely that the ratio of cats with Type B blood will also increase. There is no "universal donor" blood type in cats - a very small amount of the wrong blood type can kill a cat if is is sensitized to the blood. This can be an issue in some cat breeds. In particular, British Shorthair, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex cats, where the percentage of Type B cats is much higher, perhaps as high as 50%. Other breeds with significant percentages of Type B blood include the Abyssinian, Himalayan, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, Somali and Sphinx breeds. (preceding information from Urs Giger, University of Pennsylvania, Kirk's XI). If a Type B queen (mother cat) gives birth to Type A kittens, severe reactions can occur in the kittens Continue Reading Lab Blood Work Tests for CatsCats require blood work tests when they need to diagnosed for different diseases. Blood tests are widely used in veterinary medicine. The results are measured against normal values, which are typically present in healthy pets; these values differ across species. The lab test results may be influenced by certain drugs, so always inform your vet about the medication of your pet prior to blood tests. Prior to certain blood tests, your cat should fast.Complete Blood Count The complete blood count is a blood test that is very frequently employed to inform the vet about the amount of different types of cells in the blood flow of the cat. The red blood cell count as well as the white blood cell count and the hemoglobin are important values to determine the condition of the cat. Red blood cells transport the oxygen to the vital organs, while white cells help fighting infections. A low red blood cell count can indicate anemia, while a high amount of white blood cells can indicate an infection or a viral disease. Platelets help the blood to clot. If the platelet count is low the cat may have a destroyed bone marrow or an autoimmune disease. Hematocrit or packed cell volume (PCV) may also measure the red blood cell count. Commonly Performed Blood Tests There are numerous tests that can be performed on a cat to determine his health condition. Some tests will show how a particular organ functions, while other tests will give a general overview. The following tests are most commonly performed in felines: Continue Reading Focus On Cat BreedsBritish Shorthair Cat Breed Characteristics, Info and Health ProblemsTo many, the British Shorthair is a the epitome of a lazy feline, one who loves to relax. This misrepresentation owes itself to the plump body of the British Shorthair. In actual fact, the British Shorthair is actually a cat that was common in farms and is acknowledged for its skill in trapping and hunting mice and other small rodents.History - Bred in the nineteenth century, the British Shorthair was a favorite in many households until distinct breeds began popping up in the mide twentieth century. Not wanting this beautiful, historical cat to become extinct, a couple of dedicated cat lover's worked perilously to ensure its survival. It wasn't until the late twentieth century, that these wonderful cats were introduced in the United States, where cat fanciers became enthralled with their unusual personality and size. Appearance - There are a variety of colors and one shade was so popular; it was the only shade and color credited by cat associations for years to come. British Blue was the name of the color of choice, but after World War II, this distinct color of British Shorthairs almost became nonexistent. Enthusiasts of this breed, wanted to preserve conserve the unique blue hue, bred the remaining blue shorthairs with Blue Persians. This created an increase in the gene pool and literally saved the specific shade from utter elimination. There are different colors to choose from which consist of white, bi-colors, smoke, totoiseshell, point colors with orange or blue eyes. The British Shorthair has a roundish head and wide cheeks as well as a thick and relatively short tail. The British Shorthair, also known for its stockiness, is a large specimen of cat weighing in at a substantial nine to eighteen pounds. British Shorthair Cat Behavior and Characteristics - It is not a cat that demands incessant attention and affection. This breed behavior is highly content to go about its day doing its own thing. The British Shorthair is not suitable for those who desire friendly felines as this breed is not as socially inclined. This breed is truly happy when the food bowl is filled and his activities are his to control. There is little need to cuddle or entertain this breed in order to keep them content. Continue Reading Grooming Tips for Preventing Matted Cat HairMatted cat hair is entangled hair that ends up in tight knots. Long haired breeds are more susceptible to the condition than other pets. Cat hair is divided into three categories as each type of hair performs a certain role. The types of cat hair include awn hair, down hair and guard hair. The various function of cat hair involves protection from environmental contaminants, heat and cold. The uppermost layer of cat hair also determines the color of individual pets.Cat Hair Conditions Cats shed their fur during specific periods. However, fur loss that's caused due to skin conditions such as alopecia, dermatitis or skin allergy needs medical treatment. Although cats routinely groom themselves to maintain their fur coats, pets also develop conditions such as cat hairball due to the ingestion of hair during routine grooming. Pet owners should thus groom the cat with a brush to avoid excessive self-grooming and cat hairballs. Cats that appear sick or lethargic may avoid their routine grooming which in turn leads to matted hair. Thick knots are difficult to detangle with a comb and may cause the pet pain, if the mats are located towards sensitive areas of the body.
