In their infinate wisdom, many of the cat food manufacturers have developed different types of cat food, which varies in size, shape, consitincy and flavours which they then target to individual breeds. This is all well and good if your cat is a specific breed and not a 'variety'. Cat food is also produced differently with the cats age in mind. Almost all cat food producers manufacture cat food designed specifically for kittens, adult cats and mature cats. You are now also able to purchase cat food which has been produced for cats which suffer from allergies or for cats which are over weight. Cats will tend to tell you what they want to eat, being one the most demanding and specific race of animals. Remember that they may also get bored with the same food day in day out, so mix their food whenever possible. Cats are natural scavengers and hunters, so if your cat is an outdoor cat he/she may take a few 'snacks' for themselves, so what ever you feed your cat it will probably get extra supplements. Despite what you might think cats do like to drink alot and indeed they should.. Milk and cream is ok for cats in small amounts, but its high fat content can lead to heart problems in older age. The best drink available for all tpyes of cats is fresh water. Cats should have fresh water available to them at all times if they are to remain fit and healthy. Cats need to absorb minerals and vitamins from their food which are essential to their wellbeing. In all a cat needs twelve minerals, Calcium and Phosphorus which are crucial to maintain and develop strong bones and teeth. Cats also need minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and sodium. These aid nerves, muscle contraction, and cell signaling. Many of the other minerals are present in small amounts and include selenium, copper, and molybdenum. These minerals act as helpers in a wide variety of enzymatic reactions. The remaining minerals a cat needs to take from its food are Chlorine, Iron, Zinc and Iodine. It is an experience that can make even the bravest of cat owners fall to their knees.However, accidents do happen, no matter how careful we are. So what should a cat owner do first? In some instances prepare yourself for a long day or night of endless searching and calling. Many studies have shown that indoor cats often show certain types of behavior when they find themselves in strange and unknown territory. Most often they will go into what is called a "shut down mode" which is a type of self-preservation mode due to the fact that they are frightened and overwhelmed. Most indoor-only cats have never seen the new sights and sounds of the outdoors and the experience is not only over whelming, but also down right scary. If you are lucky enough to see your cat escape, keep a watchful eye on where it is going if it is at all possible. A frightened cat generally will not come when called, and now that you are outside, you too, are considered a scary person by the cat. An indoor-only cat's first impulse is to hide somewhere that is why if you can keep your eye on the escapee you have a better chance of catching him/her. A word of warning here, however, even if you know where Kitty is hiding, the chances of him/her coming into your arms willingly are slim and none. First try offering food or treats, should you get no response do not be dismayed, as your cat may just be too frightened or distracted and does not realize you are its friend and not an enemy. If you try to grab the cat or make a fast motion toward it, you are only frightening it more. Talking softly and moving slowly will work better; again, keep in mind that Kitty is frightened and when you try to pick him/her up, Kitty may scratch or bite. This is a defense mechanism and has nothing to do with you. Remember how you would react if someone came toward you when you were frightened, how would you react? If you know where Kitty is and if you can leave your door open, try to position yourself behind Kitty and sort of nudge the cat toward home territory. Again talking softly and no fast or sudden moves as you encourage the cat toward the house. Continue Reading How does catnip work?"Catnip" is the common name for a perennial herb of the mint family. For example, there are many scents that will trigger intense hunting behavior in dogs, and other scents will cause dogs to stop in their tracks and roll all over the scent. Although no one knows exactly what happens in the cat's brain, it is known that the chemical nepetalactone in catnip is the thing that triggers the response. Apparently, it somehow kicks off a stereotypical pattern in cats that are sensitive to the chemical. The catnip reaction is inherited, and some cats are totally unaffected by it. Large cats like tigers can be sensitive to it as well. The reaction to catnip only lasts a few minutes. Then the cat acclimates to it, and it can take an hour or two away from catnip for the cat to "reset." Then, the same reaction can occur again. The virus is classified in the same group of viruses as the HIV virus, but it is not identical. The HIV virus does not infect cats, and likewise the FIV virus does not infect humans. There is no danger that a person could catch AIDS from a cat or vice versa. There is now a reliable blood test, which your veterinarian can perform on your cat to see if it is infected with FIV. As in people, we refer to a cat that tests positive as being "FIV positive" but that cat does not necessarily yet have FAIDS, and may not become sick for months or years or in some cases not at all. When a cat does develop illness, the body's natural defense against disease is broken down. The cat is then susceptible to a great variety of infections, cancers, etc. No one specific symptom is typical. It might be a sickly cat that is not recovering promptly from an illness, or has a chronic illness such as infected teeth or gums, frequent diarrhea or discharge from the nose or eyes. While we do our best to control other infections these cats may acquire, we cannot cure them of the FIV infection, and it is usually fatal. The FIV virus affects only cats, so the risk for any cat of catching the virus comes through contact with another cat that is infected. The virus does not survive outside the cat's body, so it is not blown through the air or carried on a person's hands or clothing from cat to cat. An indoor cat that does not come in contact with other cats would be at no risk of catching the virus. Cats that are allowed to roam outdoors and may encounter stray cats have to be considered at risk to catch FIV. Studies have shown that the infection is worldwide, and in every area of the United States where stray cats have been tested the infection is present in a certain percentage of those cats. Because cats can live for months or even years while infected, they can transmit the infection to other cats. Many studies are currently investigating exactly how FIV is transmitted cat to cat. The most common method of transmission is through a bite wound inflicted by an infected cat. In this case the virus in its saliva enters the blood stream of the bite victim. Bite wounds, however, are not the only method of transmission and virus-to-blood contact is not always necessary. FIV infected mothers can transmit the virus to their offspring but not in utero. The transmission to offspring probably takes place during nursing, and experts feel the majority of kittens nursing FIV positive mothers don't get the disease. It is still unknown whether transmission takes place during mating, but since biting can be part of the mating ritual, we have to assume it could. Experimentally scientists have been able to infect cats by giving the virus orally. We don't know, however, in the natural setting of mutual grooming, sharing food bowls, etc., how often this occurs.
