Roulette is one of the most popular of all the casino games the history of which dates back to the 18th century. It was believed to have been introduced by none other than the French Mathematician Blaise Pascal. There are mainly two types of live roulette. One is the American Roulette and the other is the European Roulette. Though the tactic for playing the game is the same in both yet, there are few differences. This difference does make a huge difference on the overall odds of the game.
The European roulette is also known by the name of French Roulette due to its origin in France. The European Roulette has 37 slots for numbers 1 to 36 and a 0. The American version contains spot for 38 numbers, a spot for 0 and another spot for 00. Thus, while the European Roulette has one green pocket the American Roulette has two green pockets. This gives the European Roulette a house advantage of 2.7% and the American Roulette a house advantage of 5.26%.
In addition the American Roulette also plays host to some of the worst bet in live roulette. There are five numbers bet here at the top of the table, the number of which includes "0", "00", "1", "2", and "3". This gives the house an edge of 7%. This is worst of all the bet you can make of in roulette.
Some European live roulette tables also offer the ‘En Prison' rule which further reduces the house edge of the European Roulette from 2.7% to 1.35%. As the rule goes when the ball lands on a zero, the player's bet is not lost instead it is taken over by another spin. Thus, it gives the player another fair chance to win the money back. The rule is rarely found but, if you come over this rule on any European Roulette Table take advantage of it.
The above factors make the European Roulette the most preferred choice over the American table. If you happen to land at a place where they offer both American and European Roulette, head straight to the European one. Many gamblers are unaware of the disadvantage that the American Roulette has.
