VoIP (Voice over internet protocol), despite being a relatively new phenomenon in the world of communication, has indeed solved the problem that making long distance phone calls bring - the cost.
The VoIP systems allows for utilise the internet as a tool to make calls.
Although this is something that on the face might seem quite complicated at first, the system operates in a relatively straightforward manner.
A voice signal is taken from a VoIP phone call and converted into a data format. Consequently the data is then transported across the internet; when it reaches its eventual destination, the data is then converted back into a voice signal - thus allowing for the VoIP call to sound like any phone call made from a traditional landline setup.
Since it is free to send data across the internet, the VoIP calls made internationally may not be charged any extra because of the method the system utilises. Whilst some VoIP service providers may charge a little extra for the user to make long distance calls, it certainly won't be anywhere near the high cost level that standard telecoms companies tend to offer customers.
In some situations, VoIP service providers will allow for customers to make calls to others with a VoIP line set-up completely free of charge. Again this provides an extra cost reduction. It could also help those that have family located in international destinations such as India and Canada; both parties having a VoIP line installed would eradicate the need to spend great amounts on long distance phone calls.
The phone that is often provided by VoIP service operators is not really that much different to the standard handset the majority of people currently use. It utilises a cradle and features many of the functions and extras that a normal phone would.
The only difference is that instead of being plugged into a phone socket on the wall, it is plugged into a broadband router.
However, there is another alternative way to make a VoIP phone call. This is to use a headset attached to computer (in effect recreating the handset and base setup of a traditional phone).
VoIP service providers will normally provide a designated phone number that will allow even those without VoIP to make calls to VoIP users, with no extra hassle.
Due to the technology involved, it may be easy to think that the setup required might possess the potential to frustrate and cause problems. Again this is not the case. The VoIP phone can be pulled and setup straight from the box and with no arduous extra installation time.
The desire to communicate with the world while at the same time keeping costs down has never been more apparent.
Thanks to the technological advances that VoIP and its many service providers have undertaken, international calls have never been cheaper. Packages specifically offering unlimited calls to international locations such as India are available in the United Kingdom for as a little as £18.99 a month.
When put against the average phone bill per month for calls made purely within the United Kingdom, you really begin to see that the number of VoIP users could in the future, in fact become the majority.
