We sell these easy to make cat litter box deodorizers to raise money for our cat rescue.
What you will need to make cat litter box deodorizers:
1 large box of Baking Soda - Buy it in the Baking section of your food store
1 box or bag of Plaster of Pairs - Buy it in the paint section of Wal-mart
Several ice tray molds - We get ours at the dollar store - 3 trays for a buck
A mixing bucket, a spoon, and a ladle or a water pitcher - Dollar Store action
How to make litter box deodorizers:
Put two parts Baking Soda in your mixing bucket
Add one part Plaster of Paris into your bucket
Adding fragrance to cat litter box deodorizers: If you want your litter box deodorizes to have a sent, then I recommend adding the dry scented carpet powder you can find at the dollar store. Keep in mind a lot of cats do not like the sent of roses in their litter box. My eight cats prefer the sent of vanilla, however when we sell the litter box deodorizers as a fundraiser for our cat rescue we do not offer the scented kind.
Now add enough cold water to make a batter. Do not use hot water to make your litter box deodorizers because it will cause your mix to flash or in other words, your mix will get hard before you can pour it into your molds.
Molding your Cat Litter Box deodorizers:
You can spray your ice cube molds with soapy water or I use generic pan release,
I pour my batter into a water pitcher and then pour it into my molds.
You can un-mold your litter box deodorizers after a few hours. I recommend you wait 12 or more hours, but if you a producing litter box deodorizers as a fund raiser for your cat shelter you will have to reuse the molds sooner or buy enough molds for a production run.
Trouble shooting when making your cat litter box deodorizers
Do a small test batch first to get the recipe right
If your cat litter box deodorizers do not set up then add more plaster. It won’t take much.
If the mix you are using to make your cat litter box deodorizers get hard to quick, you can do two things.
Add ice to your water to slow the chemical process of the plaster.
Add less plaster and more baking soda.
Never, ever, ever, and this is important, never dump this mix down your sink or toilet, or any body’s toilet for that matter. Dump it into a plastic bag or a box and toss it in the trash. Don’t even rinse your molds or tools in your sink. Rinse everything outside with a hose.
How to use your Cat litter box deodorizers
I put two litter box deodorizers in each of my four litter boxes every two weeks. The litter box deodorizers will break apart as they suck up moisture. During the summer when my cats spend much of the day outside I will only use one litter box deodorizer.
Do these cat litter Box deodorizers work
I would say they work just as well as the commercial litter box deodorizers and you can make these litter box
Deodorizers for pennies each as a fund raiser for your cat shelter
Selling cat litter box deodorizers to raise money for your cat rescue:
We package 6 cat litter box deodorizers in a zip lock bag with a label that one of the volunteers at the cat shelter made on his computer. We sell a bag of six cat litter box deodorizers for a $3 donation. In one four hour night six volunteers can knock out 200 bags. Our collection of ice tray molds has grown to over 100 molds so we can do one big batch at a time.
The next evening we gather together and un-mold the cat litter box deodorizers and package them into plastic zip lock bags. We offer them at adoption events and at a few Mom and Pop pet stores.
