Although you may have recently heard about using Uva Ursi for cats, it is a well-known natural medicine that has been around for centuries. It has been used in homeopathic remedies to quickly and effectively treat bladder conditions in humans and pets.

Uva ursi is an herb which is made into a tonic and used to support urinary tract and kidney health. It acts as an antiseptic and astringent and can prevent and treat urinary tract infections, especially chronic infections in older cats or cats who do not respond well to prescription medications.

Also known as bearberry, it is found on evergreen shrubs that grow low to the ground in many places around the world. In addition to healing infections, it also reduces the pain caused by a variety of urinary conditions.

The active ingredients in Uva Ursi are Arbutin, Ursolic Acid and Allantoin. The herb is a urinary tonic that works by balancing pH levels in the bladder, making it difficult for bacteria to grow and preventing the formation of kidney and bladder stones. It soothes and strengthens bladder tissues, promoting a healthy bladder and can also be used as a diuretic.

Too much of a good thing can be dangerous. Since too much of this herb can cause medical problems, rather than trying to administer it yourself, buy a homeopathic remedy that has been formulated with Uva Ursi for cats and other herbs known to restore balance to the bladder. Some other herbs to look for in an effective formulation include Berberis and Cantharis.

If your cat has been suffering from chronic urinary tract infections, make sure to do the research to find a remedy that is strong enough to heal, yet gentle enough to use for daily prevention if necessary.
