A Guide to Cat Acne Treatment and Prevention

Your cat has two types of glands in his skin:

Sweat glands that help regulate body temperature. Sebaceous glands that secrete sebum, a greasy substance. Sebaceous glands occur in large numbers on the chin, lips, top surface of the base of the tail, prepuce and scrotum. These secretions are meant to keep your cat's fur waterproof and his skin moist and supple. When your cat's sebaceous glands secrete too much sebum, feline acne can form.

Cats have a tendency to mark their territories, usually by rubbing their chins and faces against surfaces. If your cat leaves behind greasy, black spots on objects when he rubs against them to mark his territory, it could be a sign that his sebaceous glands are producing too much sebum. If your cat is prone to excessive marking behaviors, he's probably at higher risk for developing feline acne.

Symptoms of feline acne include: Red, swollen pores, usually on the chin, head, or lips Some cats develop black, clogged pores Symptoms are usually mild but, when severe, they can lead to extreme irritation and secondary infection.

Treating Feline Acne
If your cat's acne is mild, you can treat it by washing the affected area with an antibacterial wash (such as chlorhexidine, the scrub used by surgeons to wash their hands before surgery), hydrogen peroxide or Epsom salts. This helps stop the formation of acne and prevents secondary infections. An antiseborrheic shampoo containing benzoyl peroxide may help clear up your cat's acne. If your cat acquires a secondary infection, he may need antibiotics to treat it.

In the most severe cases, you may need to clean your cat's skin with a topical gel or cream containing benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine. Oral antibiotics may be administered for four to six weeks, or even longer in cases where there is a secondary infection of the skin. Topical or oral steroids may be needed to control inflammation associated with cat acne.

Fatty acid supplements have been beneficial to some cats with feline acne. Oral retinoid therapy and retin-A have been used to some benefit in rare cases, but often causes further irritation of the skin.

Remember to be gentle when cleansing your cat's inflammed skin.

Prevention Tips
Prevention of feline acne mostly involves proper hygiene and diligent grooming. Here are some tips on how to keep your cat's acne symptoms under control:
Regularly clip the hair on the affected area
Apply a mild antiseptic, such as chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide or Epson salts to susceptible areas daily
Wipe your cat's face gently with a wet cloth after feeding, or choose food that doesn't make so much mess
Use ceramic or metal feeding bowls
As with most feline diseases, prevention is key.

Why Does My Cat Do Strange Things?
Cats are very interesting animals. They have certain behavioral habits which, although confusing to their owners, have explanatory reasons. One such act is purring. People wonder why their pets purr - does it just mean they are happy or is there more to it than that?

Cat Sensations
We understand the world around us through our five senses and so do our cats. Using sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch, we observe, learn, navigate, and experience. Your cat's senses evolved from those of the wild cat, a long line of hunters and predators, and are designed for the purpose of stalking, hunting and killing. Almost all of your cat's five senses have heightened ability when compared to humans. So, how do we stack up, sense wise, to our feline companions? A cat's vision is superior at night to ours but inferior in daylight. Cats have a slightly larger field of view than humans. We have a similar range of hearing at low frequencies, but cats can hear much higher-pitched sounds. A cat's sense of smell is about fourteen times better ours. Cat’s tastes are specialized, as a carnivore, preferring meat and fat. They are lacking a gene that allows them to taste, or enjoy sweet - which might help with dieting.

Diabetes Mellitus in Dogs and Cats:
All consumed food is eventually converted to sugar, the energy source for every organ in the body and for every cell in every organ. If too much food is consumed, the extra calories can be stored by the body for later conversion to sugar

I'm Allergic To My Cat!
Having a cat allergy came as something of a surprise to me. Growing up, I had many pets - cats, dogs and birds. My family were animal lovers and pets abounded, so being in contact with animals was a daily occurance.

Raising a Kitten for the First Time
If you have never owned a cat before and are thinking of getting one, you may find yourself with many questions. Hopefully, this article will answer most, if not all of them

Feline Anxiety Causes Cat Litter Box Problems:
Cats experience anxiety and get stressed out just like us human staffers. Unlike people, cats don't have a lot of creative ways to express their feelings

How To Clean Cat Urine
Home Remedies and Commercial Products: Anyone who has ever owned a cat has likely had the experience of stepping in a cold puddle of urine on the floor at least once. When it's on linoleum or another washable surface, it's not so bad, but when it starts happening on carpet and rugs

Protect Your Cat With Vaccinations
If you want to enjoy the companionship of a healthy and happy cat, 1 of the most important things you can do is to safeguard its health. Vaccinations can protect your cat from many common cat diseases.

The Story of Our Feral Cats
My wife and I were in our back yard, when we noticed a Gray striped cat laying on the far end of our yard, just watching us. Beautiful cat, but a stray. Would not let us get near her. I still believe this cat was domestic cat at one time, but was put out to run wild. The cat would appear on a daily basis. And being the soft hearted people we are, started feeding her.

Taking Care of an Older Cat:
Cats are not turtles. Okay, I know what you're thinking, people aren't turtles, either. However, when you really think about it,people are a lot closer to turtles than cats in the sense that turtles, as well as people, can live to be 100 years

Pet Horoscopes - CANCER (6/21-7/21):
These little cats are very sensitive creatures and hate to be upset. They do not like loud noise or yelling. They are easily irritated by others and thrive on a calm, stable environment. Any change in their routine, or if a stranger is in the house, can cause them to retreat and be gone for hours and even days. Cancer cats are cautious about meeting new people. Once they trust you, though, you've made a friend for life. They do not like sharing the home with any other animals, as they want your undivided attention. They do not like to be left alone, and can tend to become a bit destructive if left alone too long

Your Cat: An Owner's Manual

Your cat is a unique and complex animal. She has a variety of physical needs. She also has a psychological and emotional life that bears consideration throughout the life span. Every cat is different but here are some basic guidelines for a healthy and happy feline life.

Basic Physical Needs
Cats need good food, clean water, and a clean litter box. It sounds simple but when you consider complex health needs and the preferences of each cat, it's good to consider the following.

Healthcare
Cats need regular veterinary visits to keep up with their vaccination schedule and to monitor their overall health. Most vaccinations are on a yearly schedule and are crucial for helping to prevent serious diseases. A monthly flea and tick treatment is very important for skin health and allergy prevention even if your house is impeccably clean. Enrolling your cat in a healthcare plan will help lower these costs as well as costs during illness or an emergency.

The Best Cat Diet
A diet that best meets your cat's nutritional needs will help prevent illness and disease and behavioral problems. Cats ingest water best through the intestine so moist food is much better for them than kibble. Even if fresh water is always available as it should be, your cat can develop urinary tract problems and bladder obstruction on a purely kibble diet. Your cat's teeth and gums aren't helped by kibble, either. Regular brushing and a healthy diet are best for the teeth and gums.

The best diet for cats is a raw formula specifically formulated for cats. Cats in the wild hunt animals and their diet is made up primarily of whole animal protein including all the fluids therein. The raw meat is perfectly safe for the cat's digestive system but does require proper handling and room in the freezer at home.

How to Treat Cat Ear Mites

How to Treat Cat Ear Mites -- powered by eHow.com

Me-Ow! Inflammatory Bowel Disease Can Affect Cats

Humans are not the only animals diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The Centers for Disease Control estimates that approximately 1.4 million Americans suffer from ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, two specific disorders that fall under the umbrella term of IBD. Although it is hard to keep statistics on how many of our feline companions have the disease (dogs can be affected as well), it is not an uncommon diagnosis.

Dr. Julie Byron is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana. She explains that, "IBD is a chronic disease that develops over weeks to months." In fact, according to the World Small Animal Veterinary Associations' GI standardization group, one of the symptoms an animal must show to meet the criteria for an IBD diagnosis is gastrointestinal upset for more than three weeks.

"Owners may notice signs such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, weight loss, and a decreased appetite," says Dr. Byron. This is because inside the cat's intestines an inflammatory process is eroding the mucosal barrier of the intestinal wall.

Yellow Kitten Vomit

Although it's not unusual for most cats to vomit at certain times throughout their lives, any time you notice a kitten vomit it's important to be aware of the fact that there may be a problem with your cat. Because of the fact that kittens are generally much more fragile than adult cats in terms of their overall health and ability to deal with outside issues and concerns, even diseases and conditions that might be minor in other cats will prompt kittens to suffer from major episodes. Read on for a brief guide to the potential causes and treatments when you notice your kitten vomiting up a yellow substance.

Feline Distemper In many cases, when a kitten vomits up a yellowish substance it is a sign of a very serious and often fatal condition called feline distemper. Known officially as feline panleukopenia, this disease is common among young cats and is typically quite serious. It can be passed from a mother cat to her kittens through milk and other natural hormones and chemicals. It is also highly contagious and can easily spread from kitten to kitten in a litter as well. Although there is a vaccine against this condition, if it is not given in time and your cat is in an area where he may be exposed to other cats, he is at high risk for contracting this condition.

In addition to yellowish vomit, there are many other signs that you should be aware of if your pet has distemper. Watch out for the following symptoms:
•Fever
•Diarrhea, oftentimes tinged with blood
•Hardening of skin texture
•Paleness of gums, tongue, lips and nose
•Lack of appetite
•Refusal to drink water
•Lethargy
•Comatose state

Treating Cat Seizures With Phenobarbital

Phenobarbital is the number one choice of anti-convulsants for recurrent and uncontrolled feline seizures (such as in epilepsy). It functions as a muscle relaxant and a depressant, thus effectively quelling seizures and helping to stabilize the cat.

Cat Epilepsy vs. Cat Seizures
Seizures are a symptom, and usually caused by a disease other than epilepsy. A cat that has a seizure may not necessarily have epilepsy. Feline seizures can range from unusual mood swings to violent physical convulsions, and often will have an underlying cause. Cancer, metabolic diseases, inflammatory disease or trauma may cause them. Many times, recurrent seizures and fits will vanish after another disorder has been treated.

Epilepsy is the disease described as recurrent and uncontrolled seizures that have no apparent cause. There are two types of epilepsy: idiopathic (primary) epilepsy, and symptomatic (secondary) epilepsy. The first applies to "classic" epilepsy - seizures with no known cause. Trying to prove primary epilepsy is difficult, as cats are more susceptible to seizures when infected with a disease than other animals. More often than not, the epilepsy is the second, more common type of epilepsy that happens when the recurrent seizures become identified as the manifestation of an underlying problem.

As seizures (epileptic or not) are usually caused by a nervous system malfunction, a series of tests are required to properly diagnose the condition. Once diagnosed, phenobarbital may be prescribed to ease the convulsions, while additional medication may be needed to treat the actual disorder causing the seizures.

Phenobarbital for Cats
Phenobarbital is the most widely used barbiturate (nervous system depressant) worldwide. It comes in three forms: tablet, liquid and injection. For cats, injection is the most common method of administration, followed by liquid medication. Phenobarbital has an extraordinarily long half-life, so for many cats, a daily dosage is not required. This is particularly true after several weeks of medication, and the phenobarbital has built up in the cat's system.

The California Spangled Cat

A shorthair cat breed , California Spangled originated following a fateful visit by Hollywood script writer and animal lover Paul Casey to Tanzania, Africa, in the early nineteen seventies. Casey was shocked by rampant poaching of leopards there for their skin and after motivation by famed anthropologist Louis Leakey, decided to develop a breed that would resemble the spotted big cats in appearance and generate awareness among people regarding conservation of great cats in the wild. The idea was that if people own a spotted cat of their own, they would desist wearing of furs of other spotted cats. It was not until the mid nineteen eighties that Casey was finally able to develop the breed from a number of different cats including American and British Shorthairs, Abyssinians, Angoras, Manx and Siamese. Though the resulting Spangled cats gained initial popularity, they were not enthusiastically received by many cat fancies who were not so keen in adding another spotted cat to their registry at that time. Today very few of these purebred cats remain.

Medium sized cats with short hair, California Spangles are well muscled felines. They are lean and sculpted and move like their wild cat cousins even as they have entirely domestic genes in their heritage. Fur is short and velvety and occurs in a number of colors including black, blue, bronze, brown, charcoal, gold, red and silver. Spots are dark, well defined and preferably rounded or blocked. At times they are arranged into rosettes. Triangular and oval markings are also accepted. Tabby-like stripes often exist on head, chest, throat, legs and tail. Head is round with prominent cheek bones, almond shaped slanting golden to brown eyes and high set ears.

How To Care for Himalayan Cats

Caring for Himalayan cats is similar to the care for most feline breeds. However, there are a few unique factors to consider if you are planning to make a Himalayan cat part of your family.

1. Himalayan cats are actually a subcategory of the Persian breed. Persian cats were bred with Siamese cats to acquire their beautiful coloring. Himalayans have the characteristic flat faces and long fur of the Persian breed. Their bodies are well-muscled and lean, despite the puffy appearance.

2. Himalayans tend to have gentle and sweet temperaments and make good pets for many different kinds of families. They tend to have relaxed natures, but also to be playful and active. As a breed, they are affectionate and sweet, if a bit fickle.

3. As with all cat breeds, it is important to provide good basic care for your pet. Your Himalayan should always have fresh water available, be fed healthy food and have access to a clean litter box. Of course, your kitty also needs love, affection and entertainment.

4. A Himalayan's long fur does require some extra care. First, remember that your cat may be sensitive to overly warm weather since he has a very warm coat; make sure you do not leave him ina home without air-conditioning during hot summer months. Alternately, some people get their Persian cats shaved during warm weather, often leaving the ruff and tail untrimmed in a style known as a "lion cut."

5. In addition, a Himalayan cat's fur requires special attention when it comes to grooming. While short-haired cat owners can get away with only an occasional brushing, your Himalayan will need grooming daily. Use a soft brush to remove knots from the cat's fur and to remove excess fur.

Eye on India

India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya),is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Burma and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.

Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four of the world's major religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Zoroastrianism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also helped shape the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom from the mid-19th century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance and led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Caring For An Older Cat - Cat Health And Cat Care
Cats are living longer lives thanks to dedicated care from their humans, and advances in veterinary medicine. Most experts consider a cat's "senior years" to begin on her 10th birthday.
